Chapter 16

Alec, Zack and I were the first to arrive at the restaurant, Sophia did the right thing and privatised one of the rooms.

“Shall we pretend nothing happened for Tom?” Zack asks us.

Alec and I nod.

“But we’re not saying anything off the record, we’re talking about the progress of our search for alphas support.” Alec clarifies.

The door opens and the three of us turn our heads. David, Tom and a young man I don’t know enter the room. The latter is tall, I would say as tall as me, he has brown hair, brown eyes and good physical shape, you can tell he is training.

The three of them greet us and David introduces us to the stranger.

“This is Nathan, he is the second son of Alpha Sam of the River Pack. He was visiting us so Tom decided to invite him to his sister’s birthday party.” David explains.

A waiter enters with glasses of champagne and appetizers. We start to help ourselves.

“Zack I wanted to offer my condolences for your brother. I was there when it happened and I can tell you that Eric put up a good fight, he was very brave.” David says to Zack.

“Thank you. I hope to be as good a Gamma as he was one day.” Zack replies seriously.

“I’m sure you will be.” I tell him, patting him on the back.

I feel Tom’s gaze on me but I do my best not to meet it. He knows I don’t care for him anyway and he must also know that Amelia told me about their conversation when she went to the Night Pack.

As I wonder what the girls are doing, the door opens again, Victoria is the first to enter, she is wearing a long blue sleeveless dress, Alice follows her she is wearing black trousers and a pale pink blouse, she is very elegant. Then Sophia enters, wearing a white babydoll style dress and finally Amelia walks through the door. I think my heart literally skipped a beat when I saw her. She’s wearing a long black dress, she’s beautiful.

I go to meet her and when I put my hand behind her back I realise that the dress is completely backless.

I kiss her on the temple and whisper in her ear.

“You are beautiful. I can’t wait to take you tonight in this dress.”

She has a small laugh and whispers back to me.

“Sophia told me you were going to be in a hurry to get it off me but in the end she was wrong.”

We laugh together.

She greets everyone and when she gets to Nathan, they both look at each other open mouthed.

“What are you doing here?” She asks him.

“Do you know each other?” David asks surprised.

“Yes we used to see each other in California when Amelia visited her grandparents. I had human friends who hung out with her cousins.” Nathan answers David without even looking at him, his eyes remaining on Amelia.

I slip my arm behind and pull her closer to me.

“I was visiting the Night Pack and Tom invited me?” He answers Amelia’s question by looking into her eyes. “And you?”

“Sophia is my best friend, well my sister, and I’m the mate of Alpha Noah of the Blue Moon Pack.” She answers him.

He keeps looking at her and I can’t help but growl, he hears it and looks away. At the same time, Alice approaches us, handing Amelia a glass of champagne.

“Nathan it’s been a long time, how have you been?” Alice asks him.

“Well I’m a lawyer now, I work mainly for the interests of my pack but I also have some human clients that I defend pro bono. And in parallel I travel, around the country but I’ve also been lucky enough to be able to travel to other countries. I think that’s the advantage of being the second born.” He replies.

“What country have you visited?” Amelia asks him.

“Oh well I started with Europe, I visited France, Britain, Italy and Sweden. Then I went to Australia, Japan and India.”

“Wow that’s impressive. I wish I had the chance to visit all these countries.” She responds with a look of admiration.

I get a twinge in my chest, due to jealousy of course of the closeness they have but also because I realise that I will probably never be able to offer her the life she dreamed of. She would certainly have preferred to be in a relationship with a lawyer who would take her around the world.

Sophia pulls me out of my thoughts by inviting us to settle down. At the table, Alice is on my left and Amelia on my right, who has Nathan on her right. Sophia had to decide to seat them side by side.

The meal passes quietly, several conversations animate the table. Zack and Nathan talk about Europe and Amelia listens attentively to them, asking questions and repeating that she would love to see all that they have seen.

Suddenly I feel Alice’s hand on my arm and I turn to look at her.

“Don’t ask yourself too many questions.” She says to me.

I look at her, raising an eyebrow.

“I wasn’t born yesterday I can see how you were looking at her and Nathan when he was talking about his world tour. Noah, you are her world.” She gives me a reassuring little smile and I return it.

Sophia stands up, tapping her fork against her glass.

“Could I have your attention please? I wanted to take this moment to thank you all for coming tonight to celebrate my 21st birthday. Alec and I have an announcement to make.” She pulls Alec by the arm to stand up too. “We have learned the sex of our unborn child. And we are having...a boy!”

Everyone cheers and applauds.
