Chapter 1
The drops of rain battered the windows and roofs, the storm that raged outside was massive. The enraged wind abused the trees and the lightning ripped through the night sky. It was the worst storm that the town of Northfield Falls had seen. The whole town was in red alert because of it, causing everyone to remain in their homes. That included, of course, the members of the Celestial Army of Justice: a group of people that were thought to be chosen by the heavens to protect “normal” people from demons and other bad things that happened. Although they were considered special, very few of them possessed any other ability besides the physical one.
Unlike what many people believed, the members of the organization were common mortals. They were born in normal families, most of them with no contact with members of the organization. However, as soon as the children were born there was a sign that showed how special they were.
A black tattoo of a circle with two wings inside it would appear somewhere in the child’s body, a sign that it had been chosen by the Celestial beings. As the child grow up the tattoo would change until it acquired a very unique form that only another person in the world would have an equal one. That other person would be that child’s soul mate. It could be his sibling, his cousin or a complete stranger. In the celestial army one only can fight beside his soul mate, that’s why everyone works in pairs. Also the place in the body where the tattoos appeared dictated the kind of relationship that would happen between the two soul mates. If it was in the forearms, that meant that they were family, usually brothers; if it appeared above their hearts they’ll be lovers; and if it appeared on the abdomen, near the belly button, they’ll be the best of friends. The rarest occurrence however, was for one child to have two tattoos, that didn’t mean that he had two soul mates, which was impossible, but it meant that his connection to his soul mate would be twice as strong.
Although rare, such thing happened twice in the year of 1991. First, a boy was born. He had two tattoos, one above his heart and the other one near the belly button. This boy however was already connected to the organization, his father was the leader and one of the best soldiers CAJ had ever seen. The boy was called Alexander. Some months later a girl was born with the tattoos in the exact same places as the boy Alexander. Her older brother, Michael was already being watched closely by the organization because he had a tattoo on his abdomen. When the family found out that the girl had, not one, but two tattoos, they became very protective of her, specially her brother. The girl’s name was Karen.
Two months after Karen’s birth, her parents died in a car accident and she and her brother were taken to CAJ’s headquarters in Northfield Falls by the organization’s leader and were raised by him and his wife. Soon, as they grow up, it was obvious that Karen and Alexander were soul mates; they had become best friends, doing everything together. Their favourite activity was playing pranks on people, and no one suspected of them. After all, Alexander had, what many people called, the angel look: blond curly hair and bright blue eyes; and Karen had a very innocent look, like a small doll: big brown, innocent and sweet eyes, with long wavy brown hair, always dressed in cute little dresses. However Alexander’s father knew that they weren’t as innocent as they look, so most of the time they would end up grounded.
As time passed by, the pair became stronger and closer. At the time they both reached 18, they were considered the strongest pair of soldiers amongst the CAJ. They also showed signs of a rare ability: the ability to control some elements; in Alex’s case he was able to control the lightning and fire, while Karen was able to control the water. That however, was a tiring and draining ability, and because of that they avoided using it.
