A New Beginning

When people say “the end” it’s never really the end, it’s just the beginning of a new story that needs to be told. I guess someone cares enough to tell my story. It’s been three years since the press forgot about us. It’s May 12th, 2031, Shawn’s 21st birthday and he and I are going to celebrate. Shawn’s two months older than me. My birthday is on July 1st.

Two years ago, Shawn and I moved back to the US and decided to move to section eight(don’t worry, we finished high school in the UK) Liz decided to come too since she decided there was nothing left for her in the UK. She doesn’t live with us though, she lives in an apartment near here. We took almost all of our furniture and whatever we couldn’t take, we sold. We found a nice house in the neighborhood near our parents, and Shawn got a job at his mother’s bakery. I, on the other hand, just got a promotion at the fashion company I work at. Luckily, I now work on designs with one of the designers and work on the rough copy of the designs. So while Shawn is at work getting flour everywhere, I’m usually at home working on a design for work. But enough about business, it’s a weekend and my boyfriend’s birthday.

I woke up to the smell of bacon, waffles, and maple syrup.

“This man can be so stubborn sometimes,” I thought to myself.

I get up and walk to the kitchen and see Shawn cleaning the dishes. He turns around and smiles at me.

“Good morning Luv,” He told me.

“Good morning birthday boy,” I replied, grabbing a plate of food. “What did I say about making breakfast?”.

“I know what you said but…” Shawn replied, turning around to me.

“I don’t care, it’s your birthday and I want to treat you. So what do you want to do after breakfast?” I asked him, sitting down at the table.

“Um, we can go see our parents,” Shawn replied, grabbing a plate and sitting down. “Or go to a bar,”.

“It’s ten am,” I replied with a smile.

“I know,” Shawn replied, laughing. Talking about alcohol made me remember the smell of Shawn’s clothes. Sugar cookies with a hint of bourbon. I promise you he doesn’t drink that much.

“I have a question for you,” I told him, putting my fork down.

“Yeah?” Shawn asked me, looking up.

“Your smell is mostly bourbon, for the longest time. Do you drink bourbon?” I asked him. He smiled at me and chuckled.

“Yeah, but not a lot,” He replied, looking back down at his almost empty plate.

“So, parents place?” Shawn asked me, looking up.

“Yep,” I replied, getting up from the table. At this time I had finished my food.

I washed my plate and got in the shower. When I got out, Shawn got in and I got dressed. I wore a tucked-in black t-shirt, light blue high-rise jeans, a light blue jean jacket, and black high-top shoes. Shawn got out of the shower and I put up my hair in a ponytail, brushed my teeth, and put on my makeup. I walked out of the bathroom and saw Shawn putting on his shoes.

“Ready to go?” I asked him.

“Yeah,” he replied. Shawn and I left the house and just before we got there, Shawn told me…

“Hey, tomorrow is..” Shawn told me, but I cut him off.

“The market, I know,” I replied. I looked at him and smiled. “Tomorrow would have been the day I drove over here”.

“So, how does it feel to be a year older?” I asked him.

“The exact same,” Shawn replied, “except I can drink legally now,”. We got to Shawn’s mother’s place and it was a regular visit. After that though, Shawn insisted on going down to the winner’s stomping ground.

When we got there, we saw our regular people, even Liz. Over these past few years, Liz and I have gotten really close. Shawn and I have gotten close to everyone, but I actually consider Liz a friend.

“Birthday Boy is here!’ Liz yelled walking up to us. The rest of the crowd cheered and Liz smiled. Shawn and I smiled back.

“It’s nice to see you too Liz,” Shawn told her, smiling.

“Let’s get this party started!” Liz said, looking at Shawn.

“Alright, Alright. We have the birthday boy Shawn Kelly, and Liz Johnson!” The announcer yelled. Shawn looked at me and stepped into the box. As I watched the fight occur, I noticed how much their fighting styles have changed. They were softer rather than aggressive. In the end, Shawn won. He looked at me and smiled. I smiled back at Shawn and switched spaces with Liz.

“We have Jamie Waston and Shawn Kelly,” They announced. I closed my eyes and positioned my feet. I take a deep breath and open my eyes.

“Go!” They told us.

I shot blue fire in Shawn’s face to get him to move so we could switch spots. I created fog so Shawn couldn’t see and I built a small rock “wall” behind him and I felt him stumble back. I condensed the fog back into water and blew Shawn into the wall and threw icicles at him to keep him in place.

“Jamie wins!” They announced. I snapped my fingers and everything disappeared. Shawn and I left the box and I looked at a girl who looked to be about twenty-four.

“Why doesn’t anyone else try to challenge us?” I asked.

“Because, we all tried before, and we learned our lesson,” The girl replied. Liz walked up to us and started laughing.

“So, what are you doing today?” She asked us.

“We were planning on going to the bar later on,” Shawn replied, without letting me reply.

“But Jamie’s not twenty-one yet,” Liz told us. I smiled at her and gave her finger guns.

“Fake ID,” I replied, smiling.

“That’s Illegal,” Liz told me, copying the finger guns. “What bar is it?“.

“The bar next to the bakery,” Shawn replied,

“Well, text me when you’re on your way there,” Liz told us.

“Ok,” I replied. Shawn and I headed home. When we got there, I remembered that we still have to celebrate with “cake” and ice cream, because Shawn doesn’t like cake.

“Why don’t you like cake?” I asked Shawn, sitting on the couch watching tv. Shawn sits down next to me and looks at the tv.

“Because regular cake is disgusting, cheesecake is way better in every way,” He replied.

Hours later, Shawn and I got ready to go out to the bar. I changed and wore a black slight crop top, a tight above-the-knee black skirt, and black three-inch heels. I let my hair out for once, it made me feel confident. But at the time, the only thing I thought about was how tangled my hair was going to be. I walked out of the bedroom to see Shawn. He wore a white and maroon striped shirt with three buttons loose, light blue jeans with rips in the knees and high-top shoes.

“Wow,” Shawn said in awe of me. I smiled at him and walked over to him so I could fix his collar.

“You’re not too bad yourself, bread boy,” I replied. I walk back to the bedroom and grab one of his birthday gifts. “Happy birthday,” I told him, smiling. It was a glasses case. I opened it and you saw black glasses, just like Shawn’s yellow glasses.

“I was going to give them to you afterward, but you had to finish off the look,” I told Shawn, smiling, and handing the glasses to him. Shawn puts them on and smiles at me.

“Thank you,” He replied, chuckling.

“I got you a yellow pair too,” I told him, “Now let’s go”. I grabbed my fake ID and Shawn and I left. On the way to the bar, I texted Liz and she replied with “Ok see you soon“

When we got to the bar. We saw Liz, she was wearing a short purple dress with spaghetti straps. She walked up to us with a smile.

“Oh wow, you both look amazing,” She told us.

“Why thank you,” Shawn and I said in unison.

“Let’s get something to drink,” Shawn told me. The three of us walk up to the bar and we see a female with brunette hair and a kind smile.

“What can I get ya?” She asked us, looking at Shawn.

“A shot of patrón,” Liz replied,

“Me too, and some water,” I told the bartender.

“Bourbon,” Shawn told the bartender with a friendly smile.

“ID’s please,” The woman asked us. We all pulled out our Id cards and when I put the card back in my purse and grabbed my wallet. Shawn looked at me and I gave him “the look”.

“I’ll pay,” Liz finally said, handing the bartender money. After a few minutes, we get our drinks and sit down. I look at Shawn and smile.

“Will you ever drink something besides bourbon?” Liz and I asked in unison.

“Nope,” Shawn replied.

“Can I see what the fuss is about?” I asked him. Shawn hands me his drink and I take a sip. It was one of the most disgusting things I have ever tasted in my life.

“That is disgusting,” I replied, “Which is weird because it smells good”. I took a shot of patrón and drank my water. Liz and Shawn looked at me in confusion.

“I’m driving,” I told them, “And I have a meeting tomorrow morning
