Chapter 8 - First Day!

Piper's POV:

"Woah! It's awesome!" I chirped.

For the first time, I trusted someone's word and listened to his words. The person didn’t disappointment me, rather he exceeded my expectation.

This Friday after both of us were done with our work, Alaric brought me to a mountain. We were standing on the cliff from where the sky gave an awesome view. I had seen stars and moons before, but never it seemed so beautiful. They were shining like diamonds and seemed so close to my reach.

And thousands of fireflies were flying through the thick bed of grass and mountain shrubs.

"It's incredible!" I spoke in awe.

"I can't thank you enough for this. It's so beautiful!" I said.

"If I could, then I would grab a few stars from the sky and take them with me." I laughed looking at the sparkling sky.

I turned to Alaric, who was staring at me.

"I suppose you like it then. But if you say thank you, it will not be enough." He sighed.

I raised a brow at him.

"There's a way you can thank me properly. But it's totally up to you if you want to thank me or not!" He uttered.

"What are you saying? Of course, I want to thank you." I let out.

"Then give me a kiss." He said, pointing towards his cheek.

My eyes went big for a second before I said, "We are friends. How can I kiss you!"

"Friends can kiss on the cheek, you don't have to kiss on my lips. You keep that for someone you love. A mere touch on my cheek wouldn’t harm you. But if you are uncomfortable, then forget it."

Honestly, if I kissed him, would it be considered as my kiss? I wouldn’t kiss on his lips. Even if it was my first kiss, what's so great about it? It's not like I was going to get someone as my mate or lover.

I was already rejected.

Alaric was a good friend. I could do this much to lighten up his mood, who was making my life a lot happier and fun.

I leaned in and kissed him on the right cheek.

"Oh Goodness!" He smiled ear to ear. His cheeks went red, his eyes twinkled in such a way that it seemed like he won a million dollar lottery.

"Yay!" He jumped on the air.

"You are overreacting. It was just a kiss." I remarked, suppressing my laughter.

"It may be a mere kiss to you. But to me, it means a lot. It's my first kiss." He stated, making my eyes widened.

"It's my first kiss, too. You are the first person I kissed willingly." I responded.

"Then I am honored, princess." He said.

We spent a few hours at that place. I sat there with him, leaning my head on his shoulder. Alaric brought his guitar, he even sang a few songs for me. His voice was so good. As I didn’t have a mobile, I couldn’t take photos or record his song. Alaric took some selfies of us together.

He promised to bring me here again when I would get a phone, a place so beautiful like this would never lose its appeal.

I haven’t enjoyed myself so much in years. I was truly grateful to him.

...........................................................................

Two days later,

"What!" I exclaimed when I heard the beta.

"Yes." He nodded.

"But why all of a sudden? You told me that I will be a temporary accountant." I mentioned. I couldn’t believe it, he just informed that I had to work as Mason's assistant from now on.

"Alpha wants you to work for him. The salary will be raised."

"That's not the issue here!" I shook my head.

"Then what's the issue?" He raised his brows at me, focusing on me. How could I tell him that the alpha loathed me? I was the mate their alpha rejected.

"Beta, I think there's a misunderstanding. It’s impossible that the alpha will ask me to work as his assistant."

"Why?"

"It's because I am not educated enough. He knows it too."

"Listen, Piper. There's no misunderstanding. He wants you to work as his assistant, assist him with his work. And you will start from today."

"From today?" I was dumbfounded.

I was a nobody. Who cared how I felt?

Feeling defeated, I dragged my feet towards the Alpha's room. My heartbeat quickened as I reached there. Whenever I sensed him around me, a strange sort of excitement flowed all over my body. My heart acted on its own. It never listened to the warnings my brain gave.

My heart still considered him my mate and wanted to be in his arms. It was an impossible demand.

And now I myself walked to his door, it seemed like my heart would fly out of my chest. Keeping a strong rein on my exhilarated mind, I knocked on the door.

"Come in,"

His deep voice floated towards me.

I entered his room.

"Good morning, alpha." I greeted him. He looked as handsome and majestic as ever. He lifted his face and gave me a cold stare, didn’t even greet back.

Why did I even expect? Rude!

"Alpha, I was informed that I will be working as your assistant from today." I said.

"Yes," He nodded.

"But alpha, can I please continue what I used to do, and you find someone else as your assistant?" I uttered. I clearly didn’t want to work around him.

"I decide who will work for me, not you. I am the alpha here, not you. Got it!" He scowled at me. My heart fell.

"What will be my duties?" I asked.

"You will accompany me everywhere I go, you will make my schedules, organize my documents, my office and provide me anything I need, like tea, coffee etc." He replied.

I frowned. Because it meant I had to follow him and be around him all day.

"But alpha, could you really not find anyone to do this? Why me?" I asked.

"Why do you care if I found anyone or not? Don't you want to work for me?" He questioned, raising a brow.

"No, that's not it! I think you will be uncomfortable around me." I shook my head before he could misunderstand.

"Actually, I am wondering why you would want me to be your assistant. You clearly dislike me enough. You rejected me! Even told me never to show myself before you." I remarked.

"Why are you talking so much and wasting my time? You are nothing special. Don't overestimate your worth. I asked you to work because I needed a servant!" He snapped.

"I wonder if you were qualified enough to do the accountant job." He added.

I lowered my head. This verbal jab hurt a lot. He reminded me again that I was worthless. He already told me that I didn’t deserve him, and now he said that I didn't deserve that job either.

He gave me some files and told me to sort them. After sorting them, I had to fix interviews with each person every day.

It was strange. I never heard that assistant sit in the same room as their boss. And he was the mighty alpha, Mason. If he wanted me as his servant, why would he let me sit in the same room. He clearly hated me.

I sat at the small desk placed at the corner of the room. I started working, but I felt someone's eyes on me.

I looked at Mason only to find him staring at me. He quickly moved his gaze from me.

"Do you need anything?" I asked him.

He cleared his throat. "Yes, I need a cup of coffee."

I brought him a cup of coffee from the pantry. I returned to my chair and resumed working. But I couldn’t concentrate on my job. I felt someone watching me. And given there was only one person in that room beside me, I looked at him. And I caught him staring at me a few times. But whenever I looked at him, he looked away and focused on his documents.

It was so uncomfortable and stressful. During lunchtime, he asked me to bring his lunch. He wanted simple chicken steak and grilled vegetables.

After bringing him lunch, I was about to leave for the pantry, to eat my lunch. I didn’t want to stay in the same room as him. But he called me.

"Where's your lunch?" He questioned.

"I am going to pantry. To have lunch." I answered. His look on me changed into a glare, he clenched his jaws.

"Why?" He gritted.

Why what?

"To have my lunch." I spoke.

"Is it necessary to eat there?" He asked.

"Huh?" I was confused, I frowned at him. What was he talking about? Did he want me to starve? Eric made me starve because I never gave him what he wanted from me. My submission, my obedience.

"You are not allowed to eat there anymore." He mentioned. He was asking me to starve?

"You will have your lunch here, in this room." He asserted.

"Why? Let me eat there." I pronounced.

"No! I don't want you to gossip with others and waste your time. After eating, you will start working again." Mason stated.

I nodded disappointed. I didn’t know anyone here except Alaric. We talked during lunch break and I enjoyed his company. But this alpha wouldn’t allow me to do that either.

My heart sank. I lost my appetite. Without wasting time, I sat on my chair and started working.

A few minutes later, Mason called me again.

"What are you doing?" He inquired as he ate his chicken steak.

"I am working, alpha." I replied.

"What about your lunch?"

"I won't go today." I responded.

"Why?" His brows were knitted together.

"I lost my appetite." I truthfully uttered.

"Why? Is there any particular reason?" He questioned.

I shook my head.

"No, alpha. It's nothing. You please continue eating. Don't concern yourself with someone like me. It hardly matters whether I eat or not." I said with a forced smile.

I noticed his face hardening.

Alpha didn't say anything farther, he finished his lunch. I did whatever he asked me to do, and he let me leave early. Before going, I met Alaric and headed to my place.

The next day,

"Is it okay, alpha?" I asked Mason, handing him a file he gave me to sort.

"Yeah." He gave me a nod, taking a look.

I was about to go, but he called me.

"Wait!" Stopping, I turned towards him.

His eyes roamed all over my body, from head to toes. I waited for him to talk. But he didn’t say anything, rather his face fixed on my face. He opened his mouth once, but closed quickly. He lowered his eyes at the desk, he seemed hesitant.

"Alpha?" I frowned.

He looked up and asked, "Why do you wear clothes like this? Don't you have good clothes to wear? You should be a little presentable."

I lowered my head. I felt shame enveloping me. I knew these clothes were shabby and not good. But I didn’t have good clothes, or even money to buy some.

"I am sorry, alpha. Actually I-" Tears filled my eyes, my throat was getting closed.

Taking a deep breath, I said, "I don't have good clothes. I haven’t gotten my salary yet and don't have any money with me."

He nodded, but didn’t say anything. I returned to my chair. I didn’t feel comfortable, I began suffocating all of a sudden in this room. I looked at him only to catch him staring at me.

Now I started feeling lucky. If this man accepted me, I would be trapped in a toxic relationship. He would spare no chance to humiliate me for this or that.
