The Aftermath

Despite our many losses, tonight proved to be a success. Almost half of us perished, mostly the weaker ones. Doc also took a few bullets, along with many others who survived. Some of us even lost limbs. But the most important thing is that we’re still here.

Doc and I stand at the altar, surveying the scene. I notice the guards have made it, along with the hunter who planned the attack. Good. Doc looks down at me, as I look up at him. No words are spoken between us, but I do think he should address the pack. “Talk…to…them” I urge. He takes a moment to think, then nods. He grunts loudly, gaining the attention from the remainder of the pack. He gives a slow, fragmented, inspiring speech. At the conclusion, all of us nod in agreement.

Once again, we march underneath the starless sky. Doc leads the way, with each of the guards at his side. I follow close behind, as always. The moon peeks out from behind the clouds, bathing us in silver light. I close my eyes. For the first time in a long time, I am able to feel the breeze against my cheek. I can hear the rustle of leaves and the chirping of crickets. I can smell the dampness in the air. In this moment, I almost feel alive.
