Chapter 2

James woke up, jolting upright, his head turning rapidly left and right. His scream retreated back into his throat as he realised where he was and that he was safe. He laid back down on the bed, wiping the sweat from his face with his bedsheet.

“What the hell was that?” he said to the ceiling of his room.

He took a few deep breaths, trying to rein in his breathing. James stood up and moved to the sink, turned on the tap and splashed cold water over his face. He looked at his reflection in the mirror, studying it.

James was twenty-four, but looked older. He had short black hair, which showed early signs of greying. He was thin, though before he came to the hospital, he had been of medium build.

James suffered with schizophrenia, and had done since a young age. He was neither violent nor suffered with a split personality, but he did suffer with hallucinations. This had been mostly mild when he was younger, but as he grew to adulthood they had become disturbing, and sometimes horrific. After a particularly bad hallucination in which he had accidentally hurt his sister, he was detained at the Darkmoor Mental Health Clinic. That had been eight months ago.

James looked around his room. The hospital room was comfortable. There was a chair in the corner, a single bed, and a wash basin inbetween a chest of drawers and a wardrobe – basic but comfortable.
