Chapter 1

My name is Amanda Armstrong and this is my story. You are perfectly free to believe it or not. Frankly I often wonder if I imagined the whole adventure.

At that time I was a twenty five year old young woman. I had no brothers or sisters and my parents died five years before in a bout of plague. I was a nurse by profession but due to an unfortunate incident with a young doctor from a very rich and influential family I had to leave town. They disapproved of me. I obtained employment at a country doctors practice far away from my home town. This did not distress me greatly as I was getting tired of the big city anyway. Unfortunately it involved a rather long train journey and an arduous and very tiring coach trip.
About midway through the coach journey there was a comfort stop but it was more like a lifesaving stop. I fell out of the coach feeling as though all the bones in my body has been shaken loose and been buried under a ton of dust. There were three things I badly needed, a bed, bath and food. I realized, however, that food would be my only relief.

I entered the tiny restaurant and noticed it was quite full of lonely solitary men, men that looked as though they had no woman to cook for them. There was one solitary woman there and my gaze locked on to hers. She had dark, dark eyes that seemed to pull you into to a dark and hungry void. In fact her whole face had a ravenous look about it and she seemed to be desperately trying not to push the food down her throat. Just then the restaurants owners wife broke my gaze by asking if I would like to freshen up in her washroom. I jumped at the offer and when I had finished the woman had gone.

The food was superb and I didn't think my tiny stomach could take so much of it. After a small rest I made my way back to the stagecoach and to my surprise the driver was talking to an army Captain and several troopers. As I approached the group the driver came to me and said, "That was Captain Green. He has just told me that it is not safe to continue as there is a band of raiding Indians on the loose and he can't spare an escort. He said we have to wait here till it's safe".
"And how long would that be?"
"Seven or eight days. The hotel would put you up there till then. The state coach company will pay the bills"

With the one consoling thought that I would soon get a bed and bath I made my way to the hotel. It turned out the hotel was full and I would have to share with another guest that turned out to be the woman in the restaurant but with a different appearance. She had a nice gentle face with the kindest eyes and a caring manner. She had organized a hot bath for me and a couple of beers. It was at that moment I think I fell in love with her. I lay luxuriating in the gently cooling hot soapy water, sipping on a beer, discussing all those little things two young women talk about as they get to know each other. Her name was Lucia, just Lucia she said.

For the next few days we were inseparable and could often be seen strolling arm in arm, giggling and talking as we strolled down the boardwalk.

Occasionally I have a recurring nightmare involving my uncle. It has plagued me since childhood and that night it returned. It woke me up with a start and fully awake I observed Lucia open the window and slip out. I went to the window and spotted Lucia slipping down the alleyway in the shadows. I don't know why but I followed her. She appeared to be making her way to the small stockyards where there was some sheep and cattle. I couldn't understand this as there was nothing there. I began to think she was going to meet someone and felt that I might be intruding on something that was none of my business when she reached the sheep yards. There was no one there. She entered the yard and the sheep began to run around bleating. She began to move among them cutting through here and there till I suddenly realized she was herding them like a well trained sheep dog, she was cutting out the lambs from their mothers. Gradually she reduced the little group to one lamb then pounced on it so suddenly I barely saw it. She grabbed it by the neck bringing it down then broke it. She tore the lamb apart and started to eat it as if she had been starving. Sickened I made my way back to the hotel room and slipped into bed, pretending to be asleep. Shortly Lucia returned and went to bed.

The next morning she awoke and there was not a single sign of last night's activity. By the after noon I really began to think I dreamt the whole episode but that night I lay awake unable to sleep when Lucia slipped out again only this time she headed to the cattle yard and brought down a little calf. Again the next morning everything was quite normal only I was sure I didn't dream it. We separated while she went about some personal  business and my wanderings took me near some farmers and I overheard them discussing some wild dog taking their sheep and cattle and were planning to set a trap for it. I became determined to put a stop to Lucia's behavior by confronting her. Went we went to bed I kept a close eye on Lucia. Sure enough I watched her slip out of bed. Before she could get to the window I lept in front of her.
"I won't let you do this, Lucia." I said.

I was shocked when I saw her face. Her eyes were a kind of yellow-green with thin black slits for pupils. She had long sharp fangs protruding from her mouth and her teeth were razor sharp. Her hands and arms  had grown thicker and stronger with her fingers transformed into razor sharp claws.
"Get out of my way" she growled.
"No, I won't".
Lucia, or the monster that was Lucia, advanced on me, saliva dribbling from her mouth.
"I love you, Lucia. I love you and if you promise never to change again I will never leave you. They men have laid a trap for you. "
"Will you really promise" growled Lucia.
"Yes, on all I hold precious"
The monster slowly changed back into the delightful Lucia. We went to bed together that night and Lucia never changed again.

Lucia and I left on the stage coach a few days later with the both of us looking forward to a new life together. We were only on the coach for a few hours when there was an awful commotion. There was a lot of gunshots and the stage coach began to go faster and rougher. Eventually they shot the driver and his assistant. With no-one in control the coached eventually toppled over and luckily we were not injured. The outlaws stripped the coach of everything valuable, tied us up and threw us over their horses and rode off. We spent a horrible three hours this way till they reached their camp, four tents arranged in a circle. A tall skinny man literally threw us into the tent. He was so careless about our wellbeing that our heads were banged against any object around till we had large bruises on our forehead and several cuts about our faces.

The tall skinny man left and a fat ugly one entered. He had an evil leer on his face and he proceeded to cut our clothes off till we were lying, naked and bound on the dirt floor. The evil brute began to squeeze and pull my breasts with such force I cried out. I could not help yelling at him calling him an evil smelling fat pig. I think he got upset at the smelly bit because he then viciously kicked me twice in the stomach. I was so winded I couldn't breathe and wanted to vomit at the same time. I thought I was going to die.  My treatment elicited such a stream of profanity from Lucia that the fat pig smashed his fist several times into her face pulverizing her nose and breaking bone. He then proceed to kick her viciously several times in the ribs. I was sure several must have been broken. When he had finished he laughed and said, "Girls we are going to have a party when the boys gets back. When we have finished with you you will wish the Indian got you first.” Then left.

Poor Lucia struggled agonizingly over to me and whispered, "Please release me from my promise".
I looked at her pulverized face and agony filled eyes and said, "I release you from your promise".
As soon as I said that Lucia's face changed. All damage vanished to be replaced by the green eyes and fangs.
"Roll over," Lucia growled.
I rolled, painfully, onto my stomach and Lucia's teeth sliced through the ropes. Quickly I untied Lucia whose face returned to its bloody mess and we lay there pretending to be tied up.

Shortly the fat pig entered the tent and yelled, "Party time.". Grabbing Lucia's hair he pulled her up. I can still see the look of pure horror on his face when her face changed and within a heart beat she ripped a hole in his throat, removing his Adams Apple. Dropping the pig to the floor she lept out through the door of the tent while he thrashed about on the ground holding his throat. I lept to my feet and grabbed the Tomahawk from his belt and then proceeded to bury it in his head putting a final end to his misery. I followed Lucia to the outside in time to see her break the tall skinny mans neck from behind. Spotting me she signaled in no uncertain terms to get on a horse and get out of here. Fear took over and I lept on to a horse. The leader yelled out that I was escaping and the third man lept on to the back of my horse but Lucia had lept also and met him in mid-air, knocking him off.

As they fell to the ground she disemboweled him with one swipe off her arm. I took off as fast as I could but I heard the final anguished scream of the leader.
I rode as hard as I could for half an hour till I calmed down and then began to appreciate my dilemma. I was a naked, defenseless girl in the middle of the wilderness. My fate was obvious. It would be safer to go back and get clothes, besides I felt sure they would all be dead.

I was not prepared for what I saw. There was not four dead bodies but four dead half eaten bodies. Their chests had been torn open and their hearts gone, their ribs chewed and gnawed. Their bodies disemboweled with kidneys and livers eaten. There were arms and legs with flesh stripped from the bone. One body had the skull cracked open with the brain sucked out. My stomach could not take it and I vomited for ten minutes.

I could not see Lucia anywhere but I could feel her watching me as I searched for some clothes suitable to use. I also found a rifle and a couple of pistols. I couldn't use any of them but it gave me a sense of security. One hour later I reached a ridge above the camp site which was hidden from view by the trees but I knew it was there. Sitting there looking at it I heard a long mournful howl. I knew without doubt where it came from. I also knew I could never tell anyone of my ordeal because I would have to tell them about Lucia. They would hunt her like a wild animal and kill her. She didn't deserve that. She deserved to be free. I turned and rode back to civilization and my job as a nurse.
