The Coming Storm

Chapter Six: The Coming Storm:

I know something is coming. It’s been twenty-one years. I have been keeping track. This time, I am alone.

Most of the boys are dead. Illness or age took them. I keep hanging on. I don’t have a choice. Iris needs me. Even more so now. She doesn’t know the truth.

I picked up my phone.

“Hello, Ralph?” I asked.

“Nate? Is that you?” he asked. “How have you been?”

“Things are really serious.”

“You don’t mean…?”

“Yeah.” There was a pause on the other line.

“Have you told her yet?” Ralph asked.

“No,” I said.

“Why haven’t you?”

“I don’t know.” I rubbed my forehead. “I’m so sorry.” Ralph sighed over the phone.

“Look, I said I’m sorry,” I said.

“I know,” Ralph said. “How are you going to fix it?” I straightened up and cleared my throat.

“Right,” I said. “How many of us are left?”

“Alive?” he asked.

“What do you think?”

“Right, right. Let’s see. There’s Teddy. Nathan is still alive. Hugo died last month.”

I jerked my head back. “How did that happen?”

“Heart attack. It happened so sudden.”

“Damn. I’m sorry to hear that.”

“Don’t be. He was an asshole any way.”

“You know it’s true. You didn’t like him either.”

I frowned with a flat face. “Anyone else?”

“That’s it. Well, except for you know who.”

I quickly shook my head. “No way!”

“But you said…”

“That’s a last resort! A very last resort!”

“Alright. We only have Teddy and Nathan. What do you want to do?”

“Hm… Can you meet up today?”

“Sure. I don’t have anything else to do.”

“You get Teddy, I’ll take Nathan.”

“Got it.”

“See you in one hour in the usual place.”

“I’m on it.” We hung up. I looked out the window. The clouds already grew dark. I thought I heard thunder outside. It’s already predictable to say this but: I have a bad feeling about this.
