Surveillance

Another slow night.

Robert, Paul, Asif, and Susan watched the monitors in the Monitor Room. They didn’t just watch the building. Asif shifted a camera to a random Bristol parking garage.

Camera one. Camera two. Camera three. Camera four. Camera five. Camera six.

“Wait, go back!” Susan said.

“Huh?” Asif asked. He clicked back to camera five. Then to four.

“There!” she shouted. Asif zoomed in. Paul and Robert came over for a look. The latter had a confused look on his face.

“What is that?” he asked. A figure seemed to be floating in the parking lot. It looked like a girl about nineteen years old. Her short white dress and long black hair moved like they were underwater.

“Is that a skull for a face?” Robert asked. Asif zoomed in on the girl’s face. The camera started to glitch out.

“Hm,” Asif said. He drew back the camera.

“What are that?” Paul asked. Asif put up his hand.

“Shhh! Look!” he whispered. His team worked the screen. A security guard came over to the cars. He looked around with his flashlight.

“He’s looking for the girl?” Susan asked. The guard looked up around as he stepped closer to the car. The man turned back to the camera and shook his head.

“Can’t he see her?” Robert asked. “She’s right there!” The security guard walked back to his booth.

“I don’t believe this,” Paul said. “Is he that stupid?” Asif shook his head.

“No…” he said. His crew looked up when he said that. The leader went threw the cameras in a circle.

Camera five. Camera six. Camera one. Camera two. Camera three. Camera four.

“What are you looking for?” Robert asked.

“Shhh!” Asif said.

Camera five. Camera six. Camera one. Camera two. Camera three. Camera four.

He started clicking faster. That girl still floated in the vision of the fourth camera. Asif clicked his tongue.

“Come on,” he said to himself. “Come on. Come on. Come on!”

“What is it, man?” Robert asked.

“Quiet!” Asif shouted.

Camera five. Camera six. Camera one. Camera two. Camera three. Camera four. Camera five. Camera six. Camera one. Camera two. Camera three. Camera four. Camera five. Camera six. Came—

The toll booth in camera one started to shake. Bloody handprints covered the glass with four flashes inside the building. There was a still moment. Suddenly, that girl with the skull popped up in front of the camera for a split second before another bloody handprint hit camera lens. The camera abruptly cut off.

Asif rose to his feet. He and his team turned and ran out the door.

What they didn’t catch was the monitor turning back on. The girl’s skull face came into view with blood on her face. She seemed to be grinning as the image turned blurry. A loud static noise ripped through the air. And then…

Silent nothing.
