Prologue

June

"Alright and that's a wrap!"

Everyone started chatting excitedly among themselves about the events of the night as they helped put things back and clean the areas we used around the house. I smiled to myself at how successful the game night had actually been despite my doubts. I picked up the deck of cards from the coffee table discreetly, re locking them in their chest.
"Hey, how come Kathy didn't show up today?" Erica asked and I made a gagging gesture to which she giggled at.

"She thought that Lucian was coming today but he didn't even show either," I said. "I'm going to call her as soon as you guys leave. She missed out on a good game."

"Damn right she did."
I followed everyone to the door and waved goodbye as they left. I looked over to Erica while standing behind my front door, whos eyes were still fixed on the cards in my hands. "What?" I looked at them then her.

"Those cards are really creepy."

"They are just like regular playing cards, Erica. Just with a wicked design," I explained. "I got them from my grandmother's house."

Erica rolled her eyes, "Got them? Or stole them?"

"She stole them!" My other friend Lizzie chirped in walking by and tapping me on the lips.

"What's the difference? She's blind it's not like she was going to play with her creepy butler. They will be back in her house before the weekend is over and she wont miss them," I chuckled, opening the front door wider for them. "Are you staying the night or leaving?"

"Not tonight but I will see you for the party this weekend," Lizzie said kissing me on the lips and walking out of the house.

Erica raised an eyebrow at the action while she shrugged on her jacket and leaned in to give me a kiss on the cheek. "Tomorrow's Friday. I'll tell the rest of the gang to come over and we can play another round," she said walking out the door.
"Ah Ah! We are meeting at the mansion tomorrow, not here! I want to make it a sleepover and my mom will not let the boys stay here."
"You like torturing Kat, don't you."
"One of my favorite pass times," I waved at her and then closed the door behind her locking it. Walking into the living room, I did a quick scan before grabbing my phone and dialed Kathy's number who answered on the second ring. "June bug."

I smiled, putting her on speaker and walking upstairs to my room, "Hey Kat. I just finished the game night at my house that you, my best friend, decided to not show up to. We played this wicked game with an old set of cards I got from my Gran."

She scoffed and I heard keys tapping. "What was the game?"

"Murder," I answered turning on my room light. "Wink Murder. It has like five different names. It was fun. The cards look ancient and came in a neat box. You should have come."

I put the box into the trunk in front of my bed and closed it. "Sounds creepy. Lucian was there?" she asked.

"Lucian doesn't come around until you do, Kat. You really should give him a second chance. He's even been begging me to help him at this point." Tucking my phone between my shoulder and my cheek, I started undressing. Pausing a bit when I heard a soft thud outside my bedroom door.

"I will...eventually."

This was the real problem. Kat and Lucian's relationship problems were now the groups. I powered on my computer as I sat down in front of my desk, "So I want to have a sleepover this weekend at my Gran's old mansion on the other side of town and I want you to organize it. I'm going to send a text to my mom to leave the key and we can play a massive game of Murder there. You will come. Lucian or not."

Kat yawned, "Yeah yeah. Look there is a final in the morning and some of us actually want our senior year to be stress-free so Ill see you tomorrow, okay?"

I smiled and looked away from my phone up at my black laptop screen to see a shadow behind me, standing by the door. I gasped and turned around quickly to see no one there. "June? Hello?"

"I thought..." I cleared my throat and chuckled nervously, "Yeah...tomorrow then."

"I will look up decorations and stuff on my way to school and we can talk before first period. Goodnight, Junebug."

"Night.."
I hung up and turned to my laptop when I heard a buzzing noise from outside of my room. I turned around to see a shadow pass my room in the direction of the staircase. I gulped hard.
"Mom?" No response. I stood up from my desk and slowly made my way into the hallway only to find no one there. I sighed angrily but stopped when a light turned on downstairs in the living room. I rolled my eyes, walking down the stairs and toward the living room, "Mom! Don't tell me you have your headphones in again! How are you going...to..."

I stopped in the middle of the living room and no one was there. No sound. Nothing. I looked around the room and I felt my chest rise and fall harder.

THUMP!

I shrieked and turned to see the wooden box I knew was in my room sitting there...on the coffee table in the middle of the room. I walked towards it slowly only to notice that one of the cards was sitting outside of the box. The Ace of Spades...

A growling noise came from behind me and I heard myself begin to whimper. I was alone in the house. There was no way this could be possible. Turning around slowly, I saw a shadowed figure standing in the door way of the living room. I tried bolting for the other entrance way. Before I could do anything else the lights in the living room went out and my scream was drowned out by a cold, wet hand. I felt something lean next to my ear and whisper, "You're dead."
