Chapter 1

Misery was born cursed. Or at least, she was born into a cursed world. She now faces the consequences of our mistakes. If we had taken better care of our world, she would be safe and living in peace, but instead she will be forced to fight for those she loves. But in this future, the odds are stacked against you.

Misery glanced at the others in the class room beside her. Or as lest, the shambles that remained. Silence screamed in her ears as the dust settled from having disturbed the old room. Her team stood beside her as she took point. She gripped her revolver tightly as she checked the fallen-in floor.

Reports said that there were at least three level two’s hiding out in the school that had attacked at least 5 people passing by. Her team was to determine the accuracy of the report and deal with it as suitable. She could almost see the class room as if it was new. Clean, desks placed in rows with students sitting taking notes as the teacher talked about the lessen that day. But she knew that was impossible, the school had been bombed long before she was born.

The room had been stripped of most things but a few desks and chairs remained, mostly overturned and jumbled together.

Sound brought her back to the present as she turned on her lights and peered down the hole into its darkness.

She saw one large hound eating something bloody and gutsy. The hound itself was large, lanky and barley resembled a dog. The sickness made it look that away. Now that creature looked as if its front legs had twisted around and its skin was part rot and part blister. She motioned for her team to go into formation.

Without looking, she knew that Jack was looking out the door for an emergency while Thorn stood back for backup while Terra and Kyle stepped to her side and turned their lights on as well.

‘Throw down a light.’ Misery signed to Terra who removed her backpack to grab a glow stick. Terra quickly activated it and let it fall. It made a small ting like noise as it bounced off the ground before settling down and reveling the darkness’s secrets.

They saw a D.I.E (Deformed Intelligent experiment) sleeping off to the side. Misery signed for Kyle to take aim at the hound, as it was only a D.II. that would be easier to kill. Both team member’s took aim and shot almost simultaneously.

Misery’s revolver went off with a loud bang, while Kyle’s sniper rifle with silencer made a small ping.

The three of them with their lights checked the other corners before Terra and Misery went down to extract some blood. The drop was about three meters so they grappled down one at a time. Kyle stayed with the boys while the girls did a last check before going to work. They needed to solve the mystery behind the strain that wiped out almost all of humanity and caused such a drastic change in the animals.

You see, Misery’s world used to be just like ours. But they let their world die, by pollution, poverty and war. In 2134 China demanded that the United States of America pay back it’s crippling debt and they wouldn’t take no for an answer. The American’s worked tirelessly to pay it back, resorted to inhuman sources, slavery, bio-weaponry and other questionable things. This didn’t help the strained relationship between America and the rest of the world, even Canada closed its boarders to the Americans. America fell shortly after that and the president had no choice but the declare war against China. Treaties were broken and signed. No country was safe from the bombs or the destruction that resulted from war. Each country now found themselves in debt and unable to even feed their own people.

But everything fell apart when a lab in the states that was abandoned blew up spreading out every illness known and unknown to man. The virus caused extreme mutations in the animals and no one could figure out how to stop it. The animals turned violent and resembled Satan’s pets.

“So what do you think?” Terra asked verbally, her voice distorted from the gas mask, as she stabbed her fallen D.I before taking out her needle. It was standard procedure to make sure that the animal was completely dead before lowering a weapon.

Misery did the same as she examined hers.

“Looks like a D.I.E level 3 and just got there, not a two. Yours?”

“Level two. Damn, must’ve been a cute pet before.”

Misery would’ve shrugged. Most people refused to go near an animal in fear of it being infected, but for the most part, at this point in time, you were safe as long as they didn’t have grey eyes. Grey eyes were the start and that was when they had to be put down before they turn aggressive.

Level one’s had Grey eyes form just being infected.

Level two’s aggressive and mild physical change such as leaner and sharper teeth/claws. They also didn't like light too much.

Level threes were rabid and large.

Level four are bald and skin is light

Level fives were deformed and often had blistering skin.

Level six, the last level before death were truly horrifying. They would be able to walk on hind legs and able to run fast, jump high and grab you.

Misery stuck her needle into the creatures arm and extracted its blood before returning it to its case and place in her bag. “You ready?”

Terra nodded as they both went to the rope and called up for Kyle to make sure that the rope didn’t snap. Terra went first so Misery could watch their surroundings before she started to climb up. Misery was about half way when she smelt the aroma of fresh blood, rot and shit. She looked around before quickly getting up.

“I smell it.” Jack said as he checked the hall.

He switched to hand signals. ‘All clear.’

Misery signed for them to reform their circle to defensive. Only a level 6 could have that specific nasty odor.

William Elliott Kern: Long story, the plot uncovered midway through the story. From beginning, the story was fast moving. Then dragged on for quite some time.
