Chapter 1

My wife and daughter are traumatized. Last night, a masked maniac broke into our house, ransacking our living room and stole something of extreme value to my wife. Our home videos. After notifying the police, they noted how strange it was that the thief ransacked the house, only to take the tapes. Almost like he was looking for it, he said. After capturing the man, we had our tapes returned to us immediately. Though the labels and tape lengths are the same, the tapes they returned were not ours. The following is a description of the videos in great detail.

Tape #1// the tape of when my daughter first rode her tricycle.

The tape started out as the original one. My daughter wore her princess tiara, and she smiled as she walked out the house, holding my wife’s hand. The shot was further away than I had remembered it being, and I found it weird as it kept zooming in and out, the focus blurring and clearing. 46 seconds in, the tape projected chilling images.

I entered the shot.

I walked up, wheeling the tricycle up to my daughter as she hopped on, riding around, not a care in the world. The camera continued zooming in and out, blurring and clearing. My daughter rode around the corner, closer to whoever was filming. It was like she didn’t even see him. A hand reached out from behind the camera, and the shot turned black.

Tape #2// the tape of when I took my daughter to the neighborhood park.

This tape opened being recorded at an odd angle. It was almost like they were on top of the gazebo that I vaguely remember being there. My daughter was swinging high on the swing on a sunny day, while I pushed her behind. Even with the height difference between the recorder and me, I could hear my daughter’s laughs. Sometime in between my daughter begging to go higher, and her saying she wants to fly, the camera zoomed in, and my daughter stared uncomfortably into the camera. She mouthed some words that looked like “not now” and then the camera turned black once again.

Tape #3// the tape of when I took my daughter to the aquarium.

This tape started with me filming. The camera was pointing at my face, and I was smiling, as I switched the camera from me to my daughter, who was also smiling. We were walking around, children were running around, and fish swam in their areas. As I transitioned the camera from my daughter back to me, I noticed a decently tall, pale man wearing a hoodie.

He was staring straight into the camera and had a red balloon in his hand. The camera finished its transition, this time ending up at the dolphin tank, and the dolphins leaped up. People cheered as water splashed up. Then, I made the mistake of moving the camera to the glass. I didn’t believe the reflection, or more so, I didn’t want to. My daughter was gone and was walking away with the hooded man. I raced after them, the camera bobbing up and down until I stopped, panting. I raised the camera, and then heard my daughter’s faint voice from behind me. The camera reeled around quickly to my daughter clutching a red balloon. The camera turned black.

I stopped after that tape. I have no memories of that event at the aquarium. I don’t want to tell my wife, but honestly I think I should. She might know something about this.

matrixmark: I thought that the introduction to this was relly well written and structurally sound in its presentation. The introduction to the cabin in the woods was good too. To me, it felt like a Blair Witch of yesteryear, but the things which you added in about the mutilated boys were certainly something n...

Emperor2000: I joined Inkitt and downloaded this book following a friend who has been on here sometime recommending it. After they spoke about it a bit, I thought why not give it a go. Tony Lee: Read this during my 7-hour flight. You've done a great job describing each situation, but I believe there is room for improvement. Also, the ending was a bit abrupt and I think the last part where Terry Hunter was brought in again (slight spoiler) wasn't really necessary.. But overall the story k...

Deleted User: (A review in progress). I like this. It's sparse, gritty and atmospheric - reminiscent of the classic Golden Age of American detective fiction of the Thirties. I've only read the beginning, but I'll definitely be back. This writer knows their stuff and has done their homework on detective work. T...
