Summary

Steven and his girlfriend were walking home one night--and before they reach his dorm they are brutally attacked. He is sure that he is dying, for their attackers left them for dead. Now as he waits to die someone appears before him and asks if he wants to live. Tristan is over two thousand years old. He has seen life and death come and go. He takes pity on the 20-year-old Steven and takes pity on him and saves him in the only way he can--he turns him into a vampire and admits him into his world. But Steven will find out that Tristan and his brothers are not the only vampires. There is a city beneath a city in Seattle--it's the "original" city, the foundation that was left behind by the great fire that burned the city in 1889. And there's one who takes an interest in him and is eager to help him when Tristan's lover Isolde is threatened by Rainer the rogue vampire who has sworn revenge on Tristan. Rainer is a rogue--he has killed his own kind and he won't hesitate to kill Tristan's lover Isolde to get to him. Tristan will do anything to protect Isolde and Fabi, Claude and Steven will do anything to make sure Isolde will be safe--but will it mean giving up their own lives?

Prologue

“Call me Ishmael”.

No, not really. My name is Steven, but “Call me Steven” doesn’t quite have the same effect. “Moby Dick” was, no is, Tristan’s favorite book. He always said it was the best and worst book he ever read. He used to like to read the last part to us, the part where Moby Dick destroys the whaler, and even though the sailors know they are doomed, they allow Ahab to beckon them on in pursuit of the great white whale. In the end, when the ship and all the boats are destroyed, and the sailors killed, Ishmael survives thanks to Queequag’s coffin.

Tristan is a survivor, just like Ishmael. That’s why I don’t believe he and Isolde are dead. Tristan would never give up on living and he’d never let Isolde die.
