Chapter 1: When Does This Day Stop Sucking

It only took a heartbeat for my day to become into a nightmare... until everything changed in my life.

A gentle breeze passed through my long hair, I was against a tree, under the shade of the big oak. “Sis! Sis!” my little sister called for me, I cracked open one of my eyelids, my single emerald eye staring at her, she was in a little white sun dress. I remained silent for a few seconds until she started to poke my cheek, I let out a soft sigh, I knew she wouldn’t stop until she got her way. She continues to poke me until I get irritated, I love my little sister to bits but when she gets this way I can’t help but be irritated “yes Kayla what do you want?” I said softly. Her lips curved up into a smile, “look what I made big sis!” she said, lifting up a rose crown she made, I noticed the thorns were torn off of the stems, she was probably worried that I would get hurt, I smiled back at her.

That’s when I noticed someone was behind her, dressed in midnight black with a black cat mask on. That was when it hit me, I was dreaming, my family was tortured and killed in front of my very eyes, I clutched my head tightly and yelled “WAKE UP!” my heart leapt out of my chest as I sat up. Then I remembered who tortured them, the bloodsuckers known as vampires, I had a slim chance of escaping them, I was a traitor for leaving my family’s corpses there for the vampires to feast on. I breathed in and out, calming my rapid heartbeat, my life had changed in a flick of a minute. The vampires had raided our house, at the time I believed vampires were just a myth but they were real, as real as hell and the clouds.

I tried my best to try to collect myself, before my father died he said I was a vampire slayer. Of course I don’t know what the bin barren cupcake that is, I couldn’t imagine fighting the bloodsuckers, even if I wanted to. I stalk to the bathroom and look at the mirror, my dark brown hair’s all frizzy and poofed, my emerald eyes reveal dark bags under them, “I look hideous” I mutter under my breath, ever since my family has died I have been living with my only living aunt, she wasn’t married but she would talk to me at least. I grab a hold of the brush beside the sink and battle against the knots in my hair, a yelp comes out of my mouth as I tugged roughly.

I absolutely hate my hair, it’s a total rat in the morning. Once I get the beast of my hair under control I brush my teeth, as I’m known to have, the worst morning breath ever. I look at my shiny whites not very happy that I have to deal with the life I have. My feet drag behind me as I stalk to the stairs going down to the main floor. I feel like crap when I walk down the stairs, my aunt left me a note on the fridge for me.

I lift up the note reading “I can’t be there to drive you to school, sorry dear” I sigh, yeah I was supposed to start my new life at a new school. I gather my bag, I grabbed a piece of toast as I ran out the door, shutting it behind me. I rushed, panting heavily, my heartbeat raced against my chest, once I get to the school the bell rings. Students pass me by as I struggle to know which class I go to. Suddenly a hand makes contact with my back, I let out a squeak, quickly I turn around to face a girl that’s a little bit shorter then I am.

The girl before me has long freaky white hair (I guessed it was dyed) with red curved tips, she’s wearing a short sleeved shirt along with tight ripped jeans. She could easily been mistaken for an idol, even though her skin was pale. She offers me a cheerful smile “Hey there~!” her voice even sounds like a idol’s. I shift uncomfortably as she stares at me, even though I don’t say anything she continues to speak to me, “I’m Sabrina Jeston” she says, I finally meet her caramel eyes “I’m Tina James” I say sheepishly. She has this rock-star aura around her, she rests a hand on my right shoulder “allow me to show you the ropes of this place” and with that she leads me around the school.

That’s when I found out she is a major chatterbox with good looks, she went on and on about the guy she likes, I manage to survive until I feel predatory eyes on me. I turn to look over my shoulder to see a group of guys, sophomores? Sabrina brings her voice down to a whisper “those guys are known as the ‘Slayers’ of the school” she gives me air quotation marks “the middle one there that’s taking quick glances at you is Luke Simon” her voice is like a gentle breeze until I notice Luke licking his lips. Sabrina notices this too and snaps out “hey muscle man! no taking dibs on this new school girl!” to my surprise she barks at him. In his response he waves his hands in the meaning “I get it, no touching”, Sabrina safely guides me to my classroom “if you have any trouble with the mutt, let me know” she blows me a kiss before racing away.

Once I enter, the teacher smiles at me “hello there dear, you must be the new student, I am Ms. Willow” wow, even her name sounds like it, I offer her a slight smile “I’m Tina James” I say, a little nervous.

She points to a empty seat near the window, I trot over to the desk, setting my textbook on the wooden surface. The second bell rings as I sit down, I open my textbook once she begins her lecture. I don’t really pay attention until Sabrina flies in, wrapping her arm around me, she could have scared the living crap out of me. She giggles at my reaction “hey there Tina cake, how was your first class” she tries her best to fight a grin. I offer a soft smile “It was okay I guess” I say, shrugging, she leads me to the hallway until she stops dead in her tracks. I trail her gaze to what’s blocking our path, it was not a what, it was who, Luke Simon. God, once I saw him up close I could melt like hot gooey chocolate, his eyes were sky blue, and boy was he the definition of a sexy dirty blonde. He wore a biker jacket, and were those? I gasped, I saw a tattoo peeking out from the collar of his shirt. A-A-And his gaze was locked on who? me, to great horror, I felt like melting to the floor. “Hey there Bri” his voice was rough and also worth melting to “hey mutt, what you doing eyeballing my Tina” Sabrina growled from beside me.

Luke instantly shifted his blue eyes to meet my emerald ones “Tina?” he said in a form of a question. A lump set in my throat, I croaked out “yes?” but before he could say anything, Sabrina, god the punk rocker angel she is “hey, she doesn’t have to say anything to you” her voice was at daggers tip, her caramel eyes turned to slits. Luke let out a desperate huff, was he... annoyed? He reached out, and the fool that I am, he grabbed me by the front of my shirt. Students passed by whispering, I could hear “-she’s done for”, sweat beaded at my brow. My blood boiled at his touch, I looked up, god damn, he was 6’2 compared to me, which I was smaller.

He, I will admit was strong, Sabrina was stronger though, she pushed him away from me. “God now you’re attacking girls who get out of hospitals?” Luke snorted. “Calm, deep breaths” I told myself, why was I considering him hot. Luke gently let go of me, I hope I didn’t drool. He kept his gaze on me as I was led away.

matrixmark: I thought that the introduction to this was relly well written and structurally sound in its presentation. The introduction to the cabin in the woods was good too. Jason Phang: I'm pretty new to Inkitt (this is only my 4th book) and I must say I've been thoroughly impressed by the quality of the authors here. OpheliaJones: This story took a different kind of spin on the "normal girl lives with definitely not normal guy" plot. The plot points of Frey's father, Liam's family, and Frey's view of Liam's world were good to read. She did not fall in love with him in the first couple weeks. Their lives were not smooth in ...
