Short Story

“No you have to let me in there!”

“Sir, we cannot let you do that.”

Gabriel turned around in frustration, then turned back to the man.

“That’s my house!”

“Yes sir and it’s on fire.”

Suddenly a few of the second storey windows burst outwards and along with the sound of crackling fire and shattering glass came the scream of a little girl. Without another word or thought Gabriel took off at full speed through the tape and towards the house, so focused that he couldn’t even hear the fire fighter yell after him. He threw his full weight and speed against the door and it burst open as he hit it. What had for so long been his sanctuary, his little slice of heaven, his home, was now an inferno. With every breath he could feel the fire in his lungs, and he was sure his hair would go soon. It didn’t stop him though, once he was past the door he took the stairs in leaps, and bounds. All he could hear was his daughter screaming, pain and terror. It so filled his mind that he wasn’t sure if he could actually hear it or if it was his panicked imagination pushing him forward. Between the heat and adrenaline, he found himself staring at a corridor of identical smouldering doors and failing to find the memory of which one was right one. His arms and legs began to shake as he stood staring at them, frozen by indecision, feeling every second like an hour. Then through the chaos came the high pitch ‘twinkle, twinkle little star’ of his daughters favourite toy. Guided by the sound he kick violently at the door and ran into her bedroom.

In that moment he imagine a universe where he’d never been allowed to enter the house, and been restrained by fire fighters, maybe even tried and failed to get violent.

At the same time he also imagined a world where he’d been in time.

In reality he stared blankly at his daughters burning cot. He could no longer feel the fire in his lungs or the flames on his face. All he could do was stare at the bed with Twinkle Twinkle Little star melting into his ears. He couldn’t feel the force of the fire fighter hitting him from the side and diving with him through the window, as the house collapsed behind them. He couldn’t see the inside of the ambulance that rushed him to hospital or the ceiling of the operating room, hear the sound of the nurse telling him everything was going to be all right.

All he could see was his daughters burning bed, and whisper,

“Twinkle Twinkle, my little star.”

Greg: This is a well thought out horror story. The twisti-turns, the creativity, and spot-on dialogue are movie-worthy. It's a perfect horror story that no horror reader can put down. If I were a publisher, I'd look you up.

jessiejam3s : When I first read this, I instantly fell in love. Can’t wait to read more 🧡

Saleha30: Zanthus.. this name will always remind me of golden colour.. this story was different.. the characters were so powerful yet vulnerable.. so aggressive.. what happened to Zanthus, it broke my heart and he did not emerged out of it unscathed..Olive had a soft-hearted person but her character was so...

Lulu Zee: Honestly at first I thought this book would have a cliche plot of "Find mate>Reject>Regret>Forgive>Happy ending" like how a few of wattpad stories went....But dammmmn i was wrong when Cian came in.😍Cian gave mystery and fire to the story...Idk why but i never liked Tai since the beginning, I find...

AudreyInAshes: I think this book is a really great modern-age thriller. The idea of the drug and its symptoms were explained generously, and while I did really enjoy this I just want to add that there is some mild gore and the killing of a pet (sorry to spoil, but I like to be prepared.) It is very interesting,...

arlene55: love the book, I have read the whole book already on Wattpad and it's fantastic. I enjoyed reading this story during my free time. The ending is a little devastating but love can be dark sometimes. I hope Una and William find their way back to each other in their journey.

Deleted User: Rarely do I find a mystery that peeks my interest, but Jack Huber's Pat Ruger reminds me of Parker's Spenser or Spillane's Hammer! Strong character with the right connections and plot drivers to keep anyone engaged and never putting it down. The encounters of the characters Ruger engages, continue...

briggy1998: I really enjoyed the book, even though I had to skip a few lines, because at times it could get a bit disturbing🙆🏻😅What I would have liked is if you could have given a bit more insight into jack's and fiona's relationship, especially the epilogue was a bit short 😬Other than that an amazing story!
