My mother heard me weeping. She came into my room. “What happened?”

I shook my head, unable to speak.

She climbed into bed with me. I sobbed against her as she held me. She didn’t ask or say anything, just rocked me in her arms. After a while, she said, “I’m going to call everyone and let them know I’ve cancelled the party.”

I would have said thank you, but I turned towards the corner and cried.
