Chapter Seventeen - “That Smiley Face Is Deadly.”

Harriet’s P.O.V

After waking up and having a quick, five-minute shower, I have dressed quite nicely. As I look in the mirror, I look myself over, the high-waisted dark blue jeans and grey, short hoodie fitting me nicely. My brown hair is in a high ponytail and I decide to go without the makeup as usual.

My phone suddenly goes off and I look over at my bed to see the screen lit up. I smile, knowing exactly who it is. As I grab my phone from my bed, I read the message.

Humpty: Oh shit, I totally forgot. Thanks for reminding me, Miss. Parker.

My smile grows as I begin to type my reply, not able to keep my heart racing at a steady pace. You might be confused as to what Tyler and I are talking about, so I’ll inform you on what’s been going on. I decided to remind Tyler that we are meeting up for his tutoring lesson in one of the English classrooms and now since I have read his message, he’s obviously forgotten.

Me: No problem :)

I get a reply instantly.

Humpty: That smiley face is deadly.

I let out a breath of a laugh, shaking my head at the message Tyler has just sent me.

Me: Just a spitting image of yourself. I won’t be surprised if that smiley face is your son.

As I wait patiently for Tyler to reply, I notice that if I don’t leave for school, I’ll be late. Being the Good Girl that I have been claimed to be, I grab my bag off of my bed and walk out of my room, heading down the stairs. When I realise that Dad has left early for work, like usual, I don’t bother looking around the house.

Suddenly, my phone beeps in my hand and I look down at it, reading the message from Tyler.

Humpty: And who’s the mom of this deadly kid?

Grinning, I type my reply.

Me: It’s your kid, isn’t it? How should I know?

When I open the door, I make sure that my spare keys are in my pocket before closing the door behind me. I lift my head, ready to walk to school, when I see Tara driving her brother’s car, Denise sitting in the passenger seat.

“Wipe that grin off of your face and get your ass in the car.”

“Has anyone seen Alec today?” Denise asks as she scratches her head in confusion. I glance over at Tara, raising my eyebrow in question since I know I’ve definitely not seen him at all today. Tara looks over at Denise before shaking her head.

“Nope,” She says, popping the ‘p’. “Why do you ask?”

Denise breathes out a heavy sigh, “One: he’s my boyfriend and two: I swear I’ve seen him today.” Denise explains and Tara laughs, rolling her eyes.

“Well, I know for a fact that he’s your boyfriend; you don’t need to tell the world. And if we did see him, we would tell you.” Tara says and Denise sighs, walking down the hallway to continue her search for her boyfriend. I glance at Tara, furrowing my eyebrows.

“That was a little suss.” I say, watching as Tara leans against the lockers with a small smile on her face.

“What are you trying to say, Harriet?” Tara asks, raising an eyebrow and my mouth drops open.

“What have you done with Alec?” I ask, my eyes wide. Tara rolls her eyes, running a hand through her brown hair as she pulls her phone out of her pocket.

“I wouldn’t go near him if my live depended on it. That guy is a pig.” Tara explains, tapping her phone slowly. I snatch her phone out of her hands, glancing down at the screen. When I only see that Tara is playing Flappy Bird, Tara snatches her phone back out of my hands. “Done?”

“Sorry.” I say, glancing down the hallways. All of a sudden, my eyes land on a familiar brunette who has blonde streaks in his hair. I haven’t seen him around school in ages, I think to myself as Liam makes eye contact with me.

But what I notice is the grin radiating from the girl walking next to him.

“Morning, Harri.” Emma says as she stops in front of Tara and me, her arm linking around Liam’s arm. Something inside me breaks as I look at the two in front of me, not really knowing how to handle a situation like this. I mean, I have liked Liam for a while now but ever since the party and seeing that photo of Emma and Liam kissing, I’ve just been so torn, especially when he said that night that he liked me.

“H-Hey,” I mutter, my eyes glancing over at Liam. “Are you two dating?” I can’t help but ask after a few awkward seconds of staring at Liam. Emma chuckles before flipping her hair over her shoulder.

“Definitely. He asked me out last night and I’ve never been so happy.” Emma explains and I nod, gulping as I glance over at Tara. She notices my awkwardness and steps closer towards Emma and Liam, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Hey, guess what? No one gives a fuck. So, take your ugly, infested ass away from us.” Tara snaps, narrowing her eyes at Emma. She rolls her eyes and waves us both off before walking away and I feel the tears sting in my eyes as I glance away to look down the hallway.

And just to my luck, my eyes meet Tyler’s.

He is standing at the very end of the hallway just watching us, his face blank with no emotion. I quickly rub my eyes with the back of my hands, not wanting to let the tears fall. Tara sighs and wraps an arm around my shoulders, pulling me close to her.

“Forget them, Harriet. You’re strong.” Tara says as we begin to walk down the hallway, away from Tyler. Feeling his eyes on the back of me, I look over my shoulder and notice him raise his thumb, asking if I’m okay, and all I do is nod, knowing that he won’t understand.

“You take care of yourself, okay?” Denise asks as she brings me into a tight hug. I nod, hugging Denise back with the same force. Tara just watches as she grabs her keys out of her bag, swinging them around her finger. Alec does the same, waiting for Denise to let go of me so he can take her home.

“I will.” I reply, letting go of Denise. She sighs and grabs both of my cheeks, placing a small kiss on my forehead.

“You’ll call me if you need anything, yeah?” Denise asks and I nod once again. She sighs and brings me into one last hug before stepping to Alec’s side, grabbing onto his hand. “Well, I’ll call you later.” Denise says and I smile, watching as she walks away with Alec by her side.

Tara gives me a blank look, “We’ve got to tell her sooner or later about her ‘amazing’ boyfriend.” Tara says as we begin to walk the opposite direction to her car. I sigh, running a hand down my arm.

“You don’t think I know that?” I ask, glancing around and watch as the people begin to get into their cars to get home to get ready for some party that is on tonight.

When we reach Tara’s car, I get into the passenger seat and wait for Tara to get in, my head swirling with thoughts about what’s going to happen tonight and what we are going to do about Alec. I mean, I hate to see Denise upset and if we tell her, we know that she’ll be exactly that. I’ve never wanted to think about that night that everything happened but I know Denise has to know. I just need to figure out the right timing.

Tara starts the car once she puts her seat belt on and begins to drive out of the parking lot. I feel my phone vibrate in my hand and I glance down at it, looking at the name and message on the screen.

Humpty: I’m on the way to your house now.

As I begin to type my reply, I notice Tara look over at me before asking, “Is that Tyler?”

Nodding, I send my reply.

Me: Okay, see you soon.

“Are you going to be okay tonight? I mean, I just don’t trust Tyler. He has a reputation for bad things.” Tara says, her eyebrows furrowing as she turns into my street.

“I’ll be okay.” I say, staring at my house which is at the end of the street. “I trust him.”

As these words come out of my mouth, Tara looks over at me before stopping the car out the front of my house. She searches my face carefully, her eyes moving rapidly.

“Harriet...” Tara starts, her hand reaching out and grabbing mine. “Are you crushing on him?”

I feel my heart begin to race while my stomach begins to do millions of backflips. The sudden urge to smile comes into my mind, and for the first time, I don’t hide it.

“Maybe.” I explain, hearing a loud motor run past the car before stopping just in front of us. Noticing that it’s Tyler, because of his car, I look back at Tara with the smile still on my face. “Maybe I am.”

A/N - Oh, my God. I am literally in love with this book!
