Chapter 23 || Chronic And Platonic...

I hate it.

I hate the feeling of being completely helpless and not being able to do anything about it.

I really want to help Kyle and his father but considering the given circumstances this seems completely impossible. I would have to proof that Kyle’s father is innocent and that Rafael is the one who is behind all this.

The problem is that I can’t try to uncover something I’m not even a hundred percent sure of, but the fact that he is actively blaming Mr. Jensen is really suspicious. Plus, I saw him talking to Elyas Selouti who mentioned him afterwards along with some other guys who seem to owe him money. Stressing the word seem.

I don’t know if that is really the case but it seems the only plausible solution, regarding the fact that Kyle’s father can’t be the thief. But what if he is...?

Hundreds of scenarios were crossing my mind at one and I couldn’t decide what to believe. It won’t help if I keep speculating of what could have happened.

I need evidence. I just have no idea how to get that evidence...

Dark clouds were starting to cover up the sky as I exited school through the main entrance. I thought about visiting Kyle since he hasn’t been attending school for two days and I’m really starting to worry about him. The rumours which are spreading like a wildfire don’t really contribute positively to Kyle’s mental state.

I stepped down the stairs and made my way to my car which was parked in the very back of the parking lot. When I gradually caught sight of the silver paint of my car, I recognized a human silhouette leaning against my car.

“There you are.“, a male voice called me. I drew closer to my car to realize that this voice belonged to Nico. “I’ve been waiting for you.”

“I can see that. What’s up ?”

“It’s about Kyle.“, he replied. “I have texted him several times after the gala but he didn’t reply and I just wanted to talk to you about it. You know I don’t really expect anything from him since we know each other for like a few days but ghosting someone like that is not nice.”

“Since when do you care if other people text you back or not ? You’ve been with your last boyfriend for like a week because he was too clingy.”

“Well, he was.“, he defended himself.

“He just ask for your number, Nico.“, I crossed my arms in front of my chest, looking at him accusingly.

“Anyway, I don’t appreciate being treated like this.”

“You really have no clue, do you ?“, I glanced at him questioningly.

A hint of surprise appeared on his face, although he tried to keep a straight face. “A clue of what ?”

“Haven’t you seen the news ? Kyle’s father is being accused of taking part in the Greenheart Robbery and Kyle has been a victim of the press ever since, believe me, I was there.”

“What ?!“, Nico exclaimed. “But he didn’t do it, right ?”

“Of course not and I’m already trying to prove that but it’s not that easy.“, I kept explaining to Nico what I’ve heard and seen at the gala and the little hunting for Sofía and Kyle at the museum.

“Well, we need to find this guy and observe him. If he did it once he’ll do it again or at least to something that will proof that Kyle’s dad is innocent.”

“Alright, Sherlock. What are you suggesting ?“, the tone of my voice being obviously disbelieving.

He took his phone out of his pocket and tapped on the screen a few times before he handed it to me. “This.”

My eyes were glued to the screen as I read an article about another renaissance exhibition that was, in fact, starting today at 5 p.m..

“Okay and what are you trying to tell me ?”

“So, if he works as a waiter in that museum he might be there too today and we can observe him and maybe even interrogate him.“, he explained.

“And how are we suppose to do that ? According to this article this exhibition is aimed for people with a lot of money to get them to donate money to the museum. They won’t let some teenagers even near the paintings.”

“Then we will pretend to be waiters which is even better considering that we have access to the staff’s room and other private parts. I believe you still have the key for the back door f the museum.“, I nodded at his assumption.

“We can sneak into the museum and mingle with the other waiters. I suppose the uniforms for the waiters are kept in that staff room which means nobody will be suspicious.”

Nico’s plan does seem pretty logical and it may be our only chance right now and maybe ever. I still have no clue how we will get some information out of that guy or anyone in there.

“Fine.“, I said determined. “If we leave now, we will be there in time just when the exhibition is about to start.”

Nico nodded in approval. I threw my bag on the backseat of my car as we entered my car and drove off.

“One more question.“, I said when we were half way through our town. “Why are you suddenly taking such interest in Kyle. It just weird because you normally don’t really act like this.”

He didn’t say anything in response and just looked out of the window as we drove through an alley, passing one tree after another.

A grin spread on my face. “Aw, little Nico has a crush.“, I teased him, causing him to shoot his head in my direction. “I’m not, just for the record, and the reason why I’m concerning myself with it is because I like him platonically and I hate it when people get charged for something they didn’t do.“, he spoke slowly, justifying himself.

“I like him platonically.“, I mimicked him, rolling my eyes at his ridiculously high state of denial. “You are such a klutz sometimes.

“Uh-huh, sure. You’re not any better than I am so shut up.“, he responded, being mildly offended.

“The difference between me and you is that I know I’m screwed. You’re just keep denying it until something bad happens. You should pair up with Sofía, honestly, you’d make a great team.“, I laughed.

“Don’t force me to all sassy cliché gay guy on because gurl.“, he snapped his fingers.” You won’t be liking it.“, he snapped his fingers again, forming a “Z”

I just chuckled at his imitation and wanted to respond when Nico interrupted. “What’s that.“, he looked through the car with a probing look on his face. “What ?”

“A noise.“, was all he said. “Sounds like a buzzing.”

“That’s probably my phone in my bag. Could you get it for me ?“, he reached out to my bag and grabbed my phone out of its inner pocket. “Someone is calling you.”

“Who ?”

“I don’t know there is just a number on the screen.”

“Answer it and put it on loudspeaker.“, he did as I told him. “Hello ?”

“Hello, Jessica. It’s David.“, I raised my eyebrows in surprise. “Uh, hi. Did anything happen ?”

“Nothing bad, don’t worry. I’m just calling you to tell you that I followed your advice and I investigated the witness Rafael Moreno a little further and I think that your assumption could be right. He has a whole load of gambling debts which he needs to pay off as well as maintenance for his little daughter. Another thing that I found out is that he worked as a broker for Elyas Selouti and he has no alibi for the time of the crime as well as the possibility. I’m now trying to get a search warrant for his house but this could take a while.”

“That is indeed interesting.“, I muttered to myself, looking at Nico who just shook his head. “I’m on my way to the museum to talk to him.”

“Please don’t do that, Jessica. This man could be dangerous or worse.”

“You know that nothing that you say will actually keep me from doing that.“, I replied firmly.

David let out a huge sigh. “Fine.“, he spoke. “But be careful and don’t do anything illegal. I don’t want to have to arrest you because of anything, understood ?”

“Sir, yes, sir.“, I said like a soldier and hung up.

Apparently, my suspicion didn’t seem to be that far-fetched. I can’t believe that someone would actually do something like this. Plus, how did he manage steal the paintings and why did he paint a sign like this on the walls and then tries to accuse somebody else ?

I guess that is for him to know and for us to find out...
