prologue.

“Ben! Where are you?” I yelled out through the cacophony of people’s yells and the blaring music. A sandy blonde head peeked out from the center of the crowd and I had found my target. I pushed through, trying to get to the only person I knew, besides Arya, in this shitty party.

The only reason I even go to parties is to get drunk, and Ben had insisted I go to this one because it was my birthday and I had to celebrate. Kill me. So by 11:00, I was literally drunk out of my mind, flowing towards the abyss that alcohol took me to. Arya was somewhere in the middle of the tumult grinding on someone, while I suffered from horrid uncoordination and tripped on my own feet walking towards Ben. Ben got to me before I got to him and led me to the couches so I could sit down for a minute before falling down and breaking my head against the hard marble floor.

“Luce, I’m gonna get Arya and then take you two home. We both know that when Arya goes straight, and you can’t walk straight, it’s time to take you both home,” He sighed. Who would’ve thought that two college freshman would have a best friend/dad in a college senior.

“N-no,” I elongated the o to what seemed like ten minutes, “We have to stay, Benny, baby, don’t be a party pooper. Look at Arya, she’s having fun, and I think this couch is very comfortable, I think I’m going to sleep here. G’night, Benny, don’t let the bedbugs bite me.”

“Lucy, no, you’re not sleeping here. I am taking you home and then you are sleeping on your bed.”

“Oo, my bed, that sounds nice.” I yawned out. Ben carried me to his car, while Arya was dragged by her girlfriend. Arya’s girlfriend was always angry at her, which I don’t think is very healthy for a relationship, I mean, how can you be angry at someone you’re supposed to love all the time? You can’t. It’s as simple as that.

Ben dropped Arya and her girlfriend off at their dorm, and I saw her fighting with her girlfriend as they walked into the building. Ben and I shared a knowing look, and we both hoped the Arya would break up with her soon. It’s not for me to say but they’re relationship is a very toxic one, and both Ben and I knew it, but Arya was keeping her eyes closed to it for reasons unbeknownst to me.

I fell asleep for the rest of the twenty minute car-ride to my house, and clearly even when I got to my house because I woke up hours later, on my bed, with a monstrous headache. Ben had been a dear and left some aspirin on my night-stand with a cup of water. Praise the Aspiring Doctor. I took the pills and sat up. Ben left a little box with a note that said ‘Happy Birthday, Luce! - Love, Ben’. I laugh to myself, Ben is so cute. I open the little box and find claddagh ring, an Irish Wedding band. A strange gift to give a 19 year old because I’m nowhere near getting married, but then I also mentioned to Ben how much I wanted one of these rings a long time ago. I’m surprised he remembered.

I put it on my right hand, crown facing in because the way you wear the ring and which hand it’s on has a specific meaning. Admiring the way it looks on my sausage fingers, I hear a clanging noise coming from downstairs followed by my mom’s voice pleading. As I clamber my way down the stairs, nausea and dizziness made their way up to my head. I end up planting my butt halfway down the stairs to catch my breath.

“Not only are you hungover, you are completely out of shape, goddamnit, Lucy.” I rubbed my temples, trying to get the head-ache under control. I didn’t hear anymore noise coming from the kitchen so I went back into my room and shut the door. My paranoid ass locked the door too, just in case there was something bad happening down-stairs that I wasn’t aware of. I plopped down on my bed and fell into a deep slumber.

Next thing I know, I’m being woken up by policemen telling me i need to go to a police station to make a statement. I had no idea what was going on and I wouldn’t find out until I was in the interrogation room that the noises I had heard the night before were the result of my mother’s murder. By my father.
