chapter ten: wednesday

Sometimes I was the definition of a creep. Right now was one of them. I was watching Lucy sleep, her face was relaxed in every sense of the word. Suddenly her face contorted in fear and pain, her mouth let out a meak “no” and she rolled into a little ball.

“Lucy, everything is ok,” I pulled her closer to me and her eyes opened. She snuggled into my chest for a couple of seconds and then sat up. Her hoodie was unzipped and it fell off her shoulder, wisps of hair that fell out of her bun caressed her collarbone. She rubbed he eyes and brought her knees up, rolling into a ball and placing her chin on her knees. Tears shone in their dark surroundings, and I sat up next to her, wrapping my arms around her and letting her cry into my chest.

“I’m sorry for waking you up, I didn’t mean to,” She said while looking up at me, her bright eyes cloudy. “It was just another nightmare, I wouldn’t worry about it too much.”

Her words told me that she didn’t want to talk about it at all, so I nodded and kissed her forehead. I wiped her tears and laid down, bringing her down with me. She snuggled into my chest and soon later her breathing slowed. I closed my eyes and with it, a deep sleep followed.

I woke up to a cold spot next to me and the sound of humming coming from the bathroom. I didn’t recognize the song, but it seemed to be a children’s lullaby. The bathroom door opened, steam poured out and Lucy came out, wrapped in a towel. Her hair was dripping and water was falling all over the carpet floor, but she didn’t seem to mind.

She continued to hum as she picked out some clothes from her closet. She grabbed a sweater and some shorts, along with a bra and underwear, and redirected herself back to the bathroom. She had not noticed at all that I was awake, and even less that I had been observing her. She’s so oblivious, it’s actually kind of cute. She came out of the bathroom once more with her clothes on and the towel wrapped around her head. She turned to look at me, and her humming stopped at once.

“How long have you.. How much did you hear? Or see?” Her cheeks became red and her eyes went wide. “Oh god, did you hear me humming?” Her hands went up to cover her face.

“Not if you didn’t want me to,” I replied, “but, I must say your voice is quite beautiful, Lucy.” She put her hands to the side of her face and it was quite apparent that she was super flushed. I stood up and walked over to her cupping my hands over hers.

“But if you didn’t want me to hear it, I didn’t.” I kissed her forehead and hugged her close. I didn’t want anything else to happen to her, I already knew what caused her nightmares. If it was in my power, I would make sure nothing else would ever happen to her again.

The only way I could make sure nothing ever happened to her was to leave her. Being with me is a hazard, and I want to protect her from that. But, I am selfish. I don’t ever want to let her go. I came back to the moment, and Lucy was snuggled into my chest.

“I don’t care if you heard, all I care is that you’re here with me now.”

I could never leave her. Not here, not now, not ever.

“Anatoly’s daughter has fallen for Kit, Alexei,” he reported, passing along his observations and the pictures of their dinner at the diner. “They looked like the average couple, smiles reaching their eyes, and they couldn’t take their eyes off of each other, boss. It was a success.”

Alexei’s eyes were drawn to the picture of Lucy’s face. She was the spitting image of her Mother, Katerina. Once upon a time, Katerina had been his, until Anatoly came in. Anatoly became his best friend, and had stolen Katerina out from under his nose. It was sad what had happened, even sadder that Lucy now believed that her father had been the one responsible for killing her mother. Anatoly was rotting away in prison.

His crime was not killing Katerina, it was taking her away from the man who loved her more than anyone ever could.

“They did not see you?” His voice was gruff, with a thick russian accent that came from the years he had lived in Russia. It was too late now to get rid of it, but he was proud of his heritage. He wore it on his sleeve, and made sure everyone knew it.

After all, he was the leader of the Russian mob, so who would challenge him if he was the most russian man there.

“No, they did not see me,” The spy replied, “Kit was too focused on Lucy to be able to notice his surroundings, as you had trained him to do.”

“Are you saying MY training was not sufficient?” Alexei’s voice came out menacing, as it sounded most of the time.

“No, sir, not at all,” Sweat beaded the spy’s forehead, “I was just saying that while you gave him very extensive training, his infatuation with this girl is strong enough to make him forget it. In a few weeks time you will be able to go through with your plan.”

“Do not tell me what to do!” The Russian Bear was starting to come out, “I will say when the plan is to go through, I do not need your opinion, do you understand me?! You will speak only when I ask you to from now on, and only answer what I ask you to answer, you will not give me any of your opinions. Am I understood?”

“Yes, sir.” The spy’s voice came out weak, fear lining it. Alexei dismissed him with a wave of his hand. The spy scurried out of the room, leaving Alexei alone with his thoughts.

“Soon, моя любовь, soon we will see each other,” He whispered to himself, His fingers tracing over Lucy’s face.
