chapter two: saturday

Lucy, my darling girl, where are you hiding?

I woke up startled, with someone’s hand on my shoulder. I turned and saw Kit looking at me, his hand shaking me slightly.

“Lucy, are you alright?” His eyes peering straight into mine, a look of concern plastered on his face.

“Yeah, I’m fine, don’t worry about it,” I shook it off. I’d been having these nightmares for almost a year, since my dad murdered my mother. I hadn’t seen it or anything, but since I was home at the time, I could have done something to stop it, I could’ve gone down into the kitchen and calmed my father down when I heard them screaming at each other. I don’t know, I just feel like I should have done something about it.

“Alright, suit yourself,” I rolled my eyes, people always try to guilt you into saying something you don’t want to say and it gets annoying. “Me and Arya made breakfast if you want some, it’s downstairs when you’re ready.”

I nodded and got up from the bed, sitting on the edge for awhile. I had promised myself to never tell anyone about what had happened to my family because a lot of people already knew. Headlines appeared in every newspaper saying “Russian Man Collapses in a fit of Insanity and Murders Wife” or “Russian Family suffers a Great Misfortune as Husband Murders Wife”. Of course, the fact that we are russian was the first thing brought up, since no regular American could do this. The fear of the unknown and the different will always be exploited in America, and my family was the perfect example of it.

I shook my head, erasing these thoughts from my mind and went downstairs. I heard laughter coming from the kitchen and smiled. This was something that hadn’t been present in this house for a long time. I walked into the kitchen and that smile immediately left.

It was a complete fucking mess. Flour was everywhere, there were eggs on the floor and a puddle of milk in a corner. I should have known better when he said he and Arya made breakfast. Arya was a mess in the kitchen, she was never made to cook.

“We made pancakes, Luce!” Arya turned around, with a smile that went all the way up to her eyes. “And don’t worry about the mess, Kit and I are going to clean it up after breakfast.” I smiled at her and wrapped my arms around her. I missed my friend, I hadn’t seen her for a while, and it was nice to know that she would always answer my calls.

“You better clean this shit up,” I murmured and grabbed a pancake. They were chocolate-chip, my favorite kind. I placed it on a plate and walked over to a cupboard, taking out the REAL maple syrup and whipped cream from the fridge.

“Wow, extremely healthy,” Arya raised her eyebrows, gesturing to my pancake full of whipped cream.

“I work out, leave me be, woman.” I cut into my pancakes and shoved the piece into my mouth. I didn’t realize how hungry I was until the pancake hit my stomach. I was starving. The morning’s events had left me exhausted in more ways than one. I grabbed the coffee and poured it into a cup, adding a little bit of milk to take away from the sour taste.

“What’s the plan for today?” I asked while sipping at my coffee.

“Well, I won’t be able to do anything for a while seeing as I am fucked up beyond repair,” Kit began, “But I was thinking we could have a movie day and then Arya could sleep over. We could have a BFF sleepover!” I turned to look at Arya, and we both had the same look on our faces.

“Alright, that sounds like a good idea,” Arya answered, and we finished eating breakfast. Kit kept on joking around and I realized how cute he was. He had freckles all over the bridge of his nose and his cheeks, and his eyes were beautiful. They were brown with little flecks of green, to be honest he looked like a fucking god.

While they cleaned the kitchen, I went upstairs to take a shower. My cat, Bagheera, finally came out of his hiding place, which was in my closet. He seemed to have been as freaked out as I was. I picked him up and took him with me to the bathroom. I set him down and took off my clothes. I looked at myself in the mirror, and I didn’t have a bad body at all, it’s just that everyone has their bad days in which they feel like a potato, and today was one of those days.

I turned on the shower and walked in. The hot water washed off all the stress and dirt from my body, and I relaxed. I let my mind drift and I began to think about Ben. I hadn’t talked to him in about a month. He had been texting me but I always forgot to answer. I decided to text him later to ask how he was.

I woke up to crashing sounds downstairs. I walked down the stairs with a lot of trouble to find my cousin making a mess. She was hunkered down in the edge of the kitchen just staring at the mess of flour and eggs that littered the floor.

“Arya, what the hell happened here?” He eyes widened, and a big smile took up her face. She ran towards me and hugged me. I winced, as my whole body fucking hurt.

“I tried making breakfast and failed. Also, I MISS YOU, YOU BIG DUMBASS!” Her little shriek almost burst my eardrums. “What have you been up to, aside from your completely illegal stunts that led you to be out there buried alive, and dragging Lucy into your shit.”

“You need to keep your voice down, I’m pretty sure Lucy is still sleeping if she hasn’t come down,” I hushed her, “And I’ve been good, my illegal stunts are my business, and I miss you too, Arry.” I walked across the kitchen and began making actual breakfast. I decided to make chocolate-chip pancakes, my favorites. As I was making them, I caught Arya up to the events of my life. I told her how my girlfriend broke up with me when she found out what I’d been doing because she didn’t want any issues with the law, and how my boss had issued a bounty on my head because I left him.

“You’re in some deep shit, Kit. I’m sorry,” I looked up at her and she was looking at me with pity in her eyes.

“Nah, Arry, don’t worry about it,” I shook it off, “I’ll be fine. Keep an eye on the stove, I’m gonna go get Lucy.”

“Oo, Okay,” She raised her eyebrows and giggled. I rolled my eyes, always the matchmaker.

I walked up the steps and made my way to the room in which Lucy was sleeping. I heard whimpering and I felt my heart leap into my throat. She was in the bed, lightly thrashing, and her face was wrinkled up. She looked like she was in pain, and I felt a little angry. Angry that she suffered, and anger that it had been at the hands of my boss, the family picture on the nightstand confirming my fears.

I gently shook her and called out her name, trying to wake her up gently. I asked her if she was alright, and she gently shook me off, saying she was fine. I felt a little hurt that she didn’t want to tell me, but it was just as well. I wouldn’t tell her anything about myself, and this would be the best way to make sure she wouldn’t suffer at the hands of my boss again. I told her breakfast was ready and made my way downstairs, where Arya was already eating.

“Didn’t anyone tell you it was rude to start eating without the others?” I chided her jokingly. Her laughter rang, making me laugh as well. Soon after, I saw Lucy in the kitchen, smiling at us. Her smile quickly fell when she saw the mess Arya had made. Arya told her we would clean it up and she relaxed. Grabbing a pancake, she set it on her plate and went to the cupboard to maple syrup and some whipped cream.

“Wow, extremely healthy,” Arya raised her eyebrows, gesturing to her pancake full of whipped cream. I chuckled a little, seeing as that’s the exact way I eat my pancakes as well.

“I work out, leave me be, woman.” She made her way over to the coffee machine and poured herself a cup of coffee. I took the time to observe her, and she was beautiful in her own right. She was short, maybe around 5’2”, 5’3”, but it suited her. Her face was square-ish, but her cheekbones and jaw were pretty defined. Her nose was small, and button-like and her eyes were big and brown, like they could take in the whole world with one look. She had a couple of freckles here and there, and the ones I liked the most were two that were right under her right eye. I’m not even going to lie and say I didn’t look at her ass last night, she had a nice ass, and it was proportional to her body like it fit in really well. All in all, she was very visually appeasing. I found myself zoning out a little while staring at her but her question brought me back to Earth.

“What’s the plan for today?” She asked while sipping at her coffee.

“Well, I won’t be able to do anything for a while seeing as I am fucked up beyond repair, but I was thinking we could have a movie day and then Arya could sleep over. We could have a BFF sleepover!” I threw in that last part to play with them a little. They shared a look with one another that made me smile.

“Alright, that sounds like a good idea,” Arya answered, and we finished eating breakfast. When we finished, Lucy went upstairs to shower and Arya and I stayed in the kitchen to clean up. Arya stared at me with a knowing look, but knowing of what, I didn’t know.

“So a movie day, what are you gonna choose?” She looked at me smirking, “A scary movie, so Lucy falls into your arms, like a damsel in distress?” She laughed and I squinted my eyes at her.

“Shut up, Arya, I’m going to let her pick the movie.”

“Whatever you say, Kit, but if you hurt her, you are going to have a lot more to worry about than the Russian mob behind your back.” And she went back to cleaning. And I hoped to god I would never have the chance to hurt this girl.
