chapter three: saturday

I got out of the shower and dried myself off. It felt so nice to shower, for the third time, after the morning I had. It seems like all I do at this point is shower. I pet Bagheera who was sleeping on the counter, and grabbed my phone. I had so many missed calls and texts, mostly from the time when my dad killed my mom from reporters and relatives who wanted to talk to me about things I didn’t want to talk about.

I clicked on Ben’s contact and sent him a text asking how he was. He replied almost instantaneously saying he was going to call me. My phone started ringing and I picked up.

“Hey, Ben,” I said meekly, worried about what he was going to say.

“Hey, Lucy!” He answered, excitement lacing his voice. “I haven’t heard from you in a while, how are you?”

“I’m good, Ben.. How’s the residency?”

“It’s going great. My supervisors think I’m ready to be a solo doctor.” I smiled at his excitement. All he ever wanted to do since we met him in high school was to be a doctor and help people, which is one of the main reasons I became his friend. He was kind and he believed that everyone deserves a chance at a good life, and he wanted to save people’s lives in order for them to have that chance.

“That’s amazing, Ben, I’m really happy for you!”

“Anyways, I’m almost at the hospital so I’ll call you later and we can catch up completely. Does that sound good?”

“That sounds great, Ben. I miss you.”

“I miss you too, Lucy,” He sighed, “I’ll make sure to call you later, alright? I have to go.”

“Ok, Ben. We’ll talk later.”

“Bye, Luce,” and I heard him tap his phone screen, ending the call. I grabbed Bagheera and walked out of the bathroom, setting him down on the floor before walking towards my closet, picking out another silk pajama, I have like three, and putting it on after putting on some underwear. I grabbed a fluffy sweater and some socks and with that I made my way back into the bathroom.

I put on some moisturizer and stared at my face. Some new pimples had come up and that was annoying. My eye bags had also reached a new low which was also great. I brushed my hair and shook it a little, in order for it to dry a little better than it would pressed down from the brushing. I put on some deodorant and made my way downstairs, where Arya and Kit were laying down on the couch talking.

“What movie are we going to watch?” I startled them both.

“We were thinking you should pick the movie, since you’re graciously hosting our presence,” Arya batted her eyelashes jokingly. I felt a laugh come up and I let it out.

“Alright, let’s see what we can watch.” They both moved over and I plopped down in the middle of the couch, bringing my legs up and folding them to the side. I ended up picking with Arya and we put the first Avengers movie. I wanted to fawn over both Chrises and Tom Hiddleston, and Arya was more than willing to fawn over Scarlett Johansson.

I went to the kitchen to pop some popcorn and the movie wasn’t even halfway through when I came back to find Arya snoring. That girl was like an old woman, always falling asleep in whatever she watched only to wake up, rewind and then fall asleep again. The movie ended, with me crying a little bit, and popcorn on the floor from all the times Kit threw some at the TV because someone did something stupid.

“Ok, my turn to pick a movie,” He grabbed the remote from my hand and started searching through the horror genre. He eventually picked Hellraiser, which I’m not gonna lie is a movie that scares the fucking shit out of me. “This one.” He must have seen my expression because he had an evil gleam in his eyes.

“Alright, bet,” I defiantly said. But inside, I was like holy fucking shit I am not sleeping tonight.

He clicked play and while the movie loaded, I grabbed a blanket. You gotta protect your feet from everything. As soon as the movie started my heart was already beating really fast. When the main character solved the puzzle box and out came Pinhead, I screamed a little. Kit laughed at my reaction and I threw some popcorn at his face.

“Come here, I’ll protect you from the monsters,” He lifted up his arm and I scooched over for him to wrap his arm around me. I felt so relaxed once he put his arm around me but at the same time, I didn’t want to feel this way around someone who I barely knew. It was like meeting someone you really click with at a party, but then never seeing them again. I felt like I really clicked with him, but I didn’t know anything about him and I knew that it would be hard to get him to open up. I had to decide if I wanted to spend that time getting him to open up, but his feelings and his opinions were something I also had to consider. My thoughts made me zone out of the movie, but as soon as I zoned back into the movie, I screamed.

“Nothing is gonna happen to you, I promise,” Kit told me looking down at me. I looked up at him and smiled.

“I hope you can keep that promise,” I put my head down on his chest and heard his heart beating really slowly, which was kind of weird. I sat up and he looked kind of pale, so I looked down at his torso, and the shirt was stained with blood. “Kit, you’re bleeding again, do you feel alright?”

“I feel fine, Lucy,” Then a cough raked through his body,

“You are not alright, I need to call a hospital,” I reached for my phone, but he grabbed my hand.

“Please don’t, I can’t,” He stopped himself.

“Fine, but I’m calling Ben, he’ll know how to help you,” I relented to not calling an emergency service, but I would still call Ben, which was the same as an emergency service, but cheaper. I couldn’t deal with him alone, I probably messed up while stitching him up.

The phone rang for almost a minute until Ben picked up.

“Lucy, what’s wrong? I’m in the middle of a thing here.” He seemed kind of exasperated.

“Ben, I really need your help, I dug someone up from the woods last night and they’re in really bad shape and I just really need you to come, it’s really important to me.” I pleaded, hoping he would understand the urgency of the situation.

“Luce, I can- wait, what? You dug someone up from your backyard?” He sounded mad, “Lucy, what the fuck did you just get yourself into? I’ll be there as soon as I can.” Well, I had one friend who was excited and another one who wanted to kill me so I guess things are alright.

“He’s coming, Kit,” I turned to look at him and he looked like he was falling asleep, which truly was not the case right now, “Kit, stay with me please.” I got close to him and slapped his cheek a little so he woke up.

“What’s up with you and smacking me to wake me up?” His voice was a little groggy, and I laughed lightly.

“Nothing, it’s just a way to make sure you wake up.” I smiled at him, but it didn’t reach my eyes. I was so worried, I couldn’t have him die, not just because then I would be in a shit ton of legal trouble, but because I cared about him. Just a little bit. I didn’t want anything to happen to him.

“Well, I’m up, don’t worry.” I heard him cough out. I kissed his forehead, and applied pressure to the wound with my sock and my hands. I felt my cheeks get wet and I hadn’t noticed I was crying. What a wimp, what happened to keeping my feelings a secret?

“I didn’t know you cared so much about me,” he said, nodding toward my tears.

“I didn’t know I did, either.” I wouldn’t dare tell him the real reason, I didn’t want this house to be the place of another death. He raised his hand to wipe away the tears, but I pushed his arm away. “It’s fine, don’t worry. Just don’t die on me.” I grabbed his hand and held it while basically putting all of my body weight on my hand to get the bleeding back under control. My phone pinged and I saw a text from Ben saying he was on his way.

“He’s on his way, he’ll be here soon, just stay up,” I was pleading with something I couldn’t control. But just as well, pleading hoping it would help. I looked at him and his eyes were closed, but his chest was rising and falling, indicating that he was still breathing, and I felt myself tense.

The door blasted open and in came Ben, the savior of the hour. “I came as fast as I could- you!” I saw Ben’s eyes narrowing when he saw Kit.

“Ben, he’s almost dead, please help him!” Ben’s eyes softened when he saw the state I was in and rushed over to help Kit.

“Go get some towels and put them down on the floor, I need a flat surface to work on,” Ben directed me and took over applying pressure to Kit’s wound. I ran to the cabinet and took out like twenty towels, spreading them out on the floor next to the couch. Ben picked up Kit as if he was as light as a cloud and placed him on the towels. He lifted up Kit’s shirt and looked at me. “Lucy, I have never seen such a mess, dear Lord, help me.” And he got to work.

He opened up the little satchel he brought with him and put on some gloves. He took apart the stitches I had given Kit, shaking his head and I bit my lip. Clearly, I did a bang-up job. Kit woke up while Ben was taking apart the stitches and called out my name. I was sitting by his head, and grabbed his hand. I ran my hand through his hair and he looked up at me. I looked up at Ben to see him staring at my hand intertwined with Kit’s and he quickly looked back down to his work. He cleaned it with some saline solution he had in his bag and Kit winced a little. He soon got to work, stitching Kit up in a much better way than I did. As soon as he was done, he grabbed a piece of bandage from his back and placed it on-top of the wound, using some adhesive tape to hold it in place. With that he was done.

I got the feeling that Arya had smoked some pot because she was still asleep, when that girl smoked the Earth could fall around her and she would still be asleep. I looked up at Ben and he gestured to the kitchen. I turned to Kit and saw that he was sleeping a little, he had probably passed out.

“Lucy, what the hell were you thinking? Bringing a random person who you found in the woods buried into your home? You’re putting your life at risk for someone you don’t, he could easily be part of a gang or something who would most likely want to kill you now because you saved his life.” His words sunk into me, and I knew he was right. Saving Kit’s life was one of the most dangerous things I have ever done.

“I know, Ben. But I wasn’t thinking when I brought him in, I just found him buried and I needed to save him. I couldn’t just leave him out there-”

“You could have called the police or an ambulance instead of taking him on on your own. Lucy, you have no medical training, and stitching up your ex-boyfriend does not count as medical training, hun. What were you thinking? How could you think you could take care of him on your own?” His words held all the truth that I couldn’t bear admitting to myself. I easily could have made the biggest mistake of my life saving his.

“I don’t know what I was thinking Ben,” I sighed, “I just couldn’t bear having someone die near me without me knowing again.” Ben let out a deep breath and hugged me.

“I know you’ve been having a hard time, but please call me before you go and do some dumb shit like this again. I’m here for you no matter what.” He kissed my head and I felt myself melt into his embrace. Ben was like the older brother I never had, and he thought of me as his little sister. He was always there for me to guide me, and I don’t know why I hadn’t thought about calling him before.

“Ben, why did you narrow your eyes when you saw Kit? What has he done to you?” I was genuinely curious, as maybe this could lead to some more information about Kit, who was still covered by a shroud of mystery.

“It’s just something in the past,” He quickly tried to evade answering my question, “You don’t need to worry about it. I’m going to leave now because I have to get back to the hospital. If something happens with him or that wound, call me. I’ll leave the saline solution so you can clean his wound every couple of hours and some dressing so you can redress it after you clean.”

“Thank you, Ben.” I felt some tears sting my eyes but I held them back. He hugged me again and walked out of the kitchen, I watched from the doorway as he picked his stuff up and whispered something to Kit. I walked towards them, said goodbye to Ben, after which he left. I walked over to Kit, who was still on the floor on top of the towels.

“You ever do that to me again, I will probably grow a head full of white hairs,” I laughed a little and pushed his hair out of his face. “Also, did your cousin smoke weed, because she’s been passed out for the last like seven hours without a twitch.

“I’ll try not to do that to you again,” He reached his hand up to my face and caressed my cheek. I kissed his palm and leaned into his hand. “And, to answer your question, she ate a pot brownie she had in her bag. She’s wild.” I chuckled and got up, grabbed a blanket and covered her with it.

“Let’s get you upstairs and into a bed.” Kit sat up and I helped him stand. He groaned a little because of the pain, but he powered through. We made it up the stairs and I took him to my room. He laid down on the bed and I started to leave but he grabbed my arm, stopping me.

“Please stay,” He looked at me with little puppy dog eyes, and I just couldn’t say no. I made my way to the other side of the bed and got under the covers. I turned off the light, and got comfortable in the bed. I felt an arm drape around my waist and pull me in and I relaxed under Kit’s touch. Soon, I felt a darkness creep up on me, and I gave into it peacefully.
