Chapter 38

"Where did you tell Sheva you were going to be today?"

Chris stayed quiet as he looked down at his joined hands. Here he was thinking that he had gotten away with his lie.

"You can just tell me because I already know." Clara told him as she crossed her arms and leaned back on the couch with a sigh.

"Grandma's…" Chris admitted quietly.

"And you were where?"

"Jill's party." Chris sighed then asked, "Mom, what are you trying to get to?" He honestly didn't want to know because he had a feeling deep down in his gut that was telling him that he was in a lot of trouble.

"Sheva called you today and you didn't answer, so she called me. She just wanted me to tell you that you let your watch with her and that you could come and get it… after you left your Grandma's." She paused and watched as Chris angrily ran a hand through his hair and stand up to pace around then continued to talk.

"I had to break the news to her that you were at Jill's party and she was pretty upset. She told me that you lied to her, her voice was cracking and I could tell she was trying not to cry. I told her that you must have had a good reason to lie so that might have made her feel a little better but I'm not sure." Clara finished with a shrug.

"I didn't mean to make her cry, mom. She wasn't supposed to know! I just went to drop off a present and leave because Jill asked me to go and I didn't know how to say no! Ugh! She probably hates me now!" Chris said as he paced around, angry at himself. "I need to go talk to her." He announced as he grabbed his keys again and headed for the front door. He needed to make things right, he couldn't even bear the thought that he made Sheva cry.

"No you are not going anywhere." Clara told him as she stood up and grabbed his arm. Chris looked at her like she was crazy and continued to walk to the door.

"Mom, please let go. I need to go talk to her right now." Chris begged. She let go of his arm and stood in front of the door.

"Chris you can't just go to their house and make her talk to you. She probably doesn't even want to see you right now. Call her first and tell her that you want to talk and if she says no or doesn't answer then give her some time, alright?"

"But mom, we NEED to talk! There is no time, the dance is tomorrow and I wanted us to have a great time but we can't if she's ignoring me and not wanting to look at me!" Chris told her as he began to pace around again and get worried.

"Call her Chris." Was all Clara said and she moved away from the door and headed to the kitchen. Chris sighed and quickly pulled his phone out of his pocket. He tried to unlock it but kept on messing up the pass code due to his nervousness and shaking. He took a few deep breaths and tried again. The phone clicked and unlocked then Chris quickly found her name in his contacts and clicked on it to call her. He pressed the phone to his ear and waited. It rang three times and then went to voicemail. She declined his call. He tried over and over and over but she declined each and every one of them.

"Chris?" Claire called him from the top of the stairs. Chris came to the bottom of the staircase and looked up at Claire.

"Yeah?" He answered weakly.

"Sheva wanted me to tell you to stop calling her." Claire told him and watched as his expression saddened. "Did something happen?" She asked sympathetically. Yeah, sometimes she hated her brother but she never saw him this sad and upset since their dad got arrested. Chris went up the stairs and shook his head.

"I did something really stupid and upset her. I'm trying to fix it but she won't talk to me." Chris told his sister sadly when he reached her. Then he got an idea.

"Wait, Claire can I use your phone to call Sheva?" Chris asked with the hopes she would say yes.

"I don't know Chris. She made it pretty clear she didn't want to talk. And I don't want her to get mad at me too." Claire told him sadly.

"Please Claire, I will tell her not to be mad at you." Chris begged. Claire hesitated then slowly put her phone in his hands.

"Thank you so much, Claire. I owe you." Chris told her with a sad smile and gave her a hug.

"Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm the best sister ever. Now go get your love back." Claire told him with a pat on the back. Chris nodded and ran to his room. He clicked on Sheva's name and put the phone to his ear. It rang a few times then she answered.

"Hey Claire, if you're calling to ask why I don't want to talk to your brother, ask him because I don't really feel like talking about it." Sheva said sadly over the phone.

"Babe, it's me." Chris said, happy to finally get a chance to talk to her.

"Chris?!" Sheva asked, surprised.

"Yeah, it's me. Look Sheva we really need to talk about all of this." Chris told her quickly.

"Chris, didn't Claire tell you I didn't want to talk to you? And why do you have her phone?" Sheva said with anger and sadness in her voice.

"Please don't be mad at her, I bugged her until she let me use it."

Sheva was in a mix of emotions. She was mad because he lied and basically cheated on her. Sad because he broke her heart and made her believe he loved her. Happy because all of the effort he was going through trying to talk to her, and hurt because she could her the hurt and sadness in his voice.

"Chris, I just really don't want to talk to you right now." Sheva told him as a tear rolled down her cheek. She wiped it away angrily and mentally scolded herself for being so weak.

"Baby please I-," Chris began but was cut off.

"You don't have the right to call me that anymore!" Sheva snapped at him, her voice full of anger. It threw Chris off guard because he never heard her like that.

"Ok, I'm sorry but will you please listen to me? I love you so much and I didn't mean to hurt you-," He was cut off once again.

"Well you did Chris, don't tell me you love me anymore when you don't. You want to be with Jill so be with her! I'm not in your way anymore; you can be with who you want now!" Sheva spat at him. Her words hit him hard.

"Sheva, I already told you that I don't want to be with Jill." Chris told her calmly.

"Oh really? Then why did I get a VIDEO of you two making out? Huh? You didn't look like you wanted to stop; you just let it happen so apparently there is something there still!" Sheva told him, her voice getting louder.

"Sheva I was set-up! You have to believe me! I lov-" Chris began.

"DON'T TELL ME YOU LOVE ME!" Sheva screamed over the phone. "I HATE you! I hate you! I hate you! You made me feel loved, and like you actually cared about me but you didn't!" Sheva was crying now but it wasn't only out of sadness it was also out of anger.

Chris was silent. Those were the last three words he wants to hear. I hate you. She said it without any hesitation, she must have meant it. Chris could feel his heart breaking more and more as he thought about those three words. Then the unexpected happened.

"How could you say that!? How could you say that I don't love you?! Sheva I would do anything for you! If you told me to get out of your life forever I would do it because I love you and I want you to be happy! Even if it hurts me and kills me on the inside! That's how much I care about you! Did you know that, huh?! I have feelings too, do you know how much I died inside just hearing you tell me that?! That was a knife to my heart!" Chris yelled at her, his voice cracking and tears rolling down his face.

Sheva went quiet as she listened to him sniff up his tears and take deep breaths. She made him cry. That was the last thing she wanted to do. More tears ran down her face as she listened to him. She didn't really hate him, she just wanted him to feel her pain but she went too far.

"Chris… I'm so sor-" Sheva began but he cut her off this time.

"Don't. Don't apologize for your feelings. I'll be ok. I'll just leave you alone… but I just want you to know I love you with all of my heart even if you don't love me back. Have fun at the dance tomorrow. I just know you'll look beautiful out there." Chris told her quietly then ended the call.

Sheva sat there sobbing at his words, he did love her but now he thinks she doesn't. But through all her hateful words her mind was saying 'I love you' over and over again.

She looked at her phone that was covered in tears at the contact picture of them smiling at the camera while he was holding her in his arms. She felt guilt fill her heart looking at his smile and knowing that at his house he was crying because he thought she didn't love him back.

As she stared down at the picture of them, she looked at him with a smile and whispered "I love you too, Chris. I'll make sure you know…"
