Chapter 9

“What do you think is going on here?” It was Xander. I didn’t open my eyes but I knew his voice.

“Shut up before you wake her. Also I’m staying here and keeping an eye on her. She fell down the stairs and hurt herself.” It was a good lie.

“Clarissa has been trying to get ahold of her. Something about needing to complete an assignment.” Shit Claire. Why does she have to say things?

“I know. Who do you think shut off Rissa’s phone so she could sleep?” I heard a chuckle.

“I like you. Do I trust you? Not yet. Do I approve of you being alone with my sister? No. But you are good. Letting her sleep and taking care of her when she’s hurt, means something in this family. Just don’t let the other boys know.” There was a pause. “They won’t be home tonight. Brendon and Ben are at the bar and are going to stay at a hotel. Liam just left for a business trip. Jared is with his girlfriend. Dad is working late tonight. I was going to go and stay with Emma but I don’t know if I should leave you two alone.”

“It’s fine. Go see Emma. I haven’t done anything yet and I won’t. I wouldn’t do that to her.” All I could hear now was the TV. “Xander, seriously go. Go see your girlfriend while you have her.” He stopped as I turned on my side and involuntarily winced. “Easy Anima Gemella, don’t need you hurting yourself more,” he told me quietly.

“Anima Gemella? That’s how you think of her?” There was a sudden feeling of shock in his voice.

“You know what that means?” There was a laugh. It was Xander’s.

“Marissa isn’t the only one that knows languages. Emma’s family is Spanish, Italian, and Filipino. I’ve had to learn all of them and let’s just say that Emma’s Dad says that to her Mom.” It hurt to be on my side so I moved back onto my back. Another wince left me. “Take care of her. I’ll be back in the morning. No funny business.”

“Promise me, I wouldn’t do that.” I heard the front door close. Adrian started playing with my hair. I fell asleep once again.

“Riss, come on. Wake up.” I groaned and turned and winced. “Easy Anima Gemella. Clarissa is here. She’s in your room. Something about an assignment?” I bolted up and immediately regretted it. Pain shot through me everywhere. “Didn’t I just tell you easy?”

“You did. I ignored. I’ll be back soon.” I ran up the stairs which was a huge mistake. I made it into my room and saw Clarissa sitting on my bed. “Scarlett Winslow. Take her out. I can’t. It hurts to move. It hurts to breathe. Please. Your brother did more damage than I thought.” She looked at me concerned. “Just please. Scarlett Winslow is the target. She’s working against us. Damien doesn’t like it. Wants her eliminated. There are papers in my nightstand. Give them to the others.”

“I will. You take it easy for a couple of days. Rebreaking your ribs isn’t such a great idea. Also,” she stopped and a smirk appeared on her face. “I see you’re having fun with Adrian.”

“It’s not like that. Anyway, you are literally the best. I love you, now get out.” She laughed and grabbed the papers before leaving. I lingered a bit before I went back into the living room. “Dinner?”

“Of course. What would you like Anima Gemella?” I smiled at him.

“Whatever you feel like Mon Roi.” I made my way over to him and laid down. I was still tired and I still felt so much pain. He went on his phone and placed a call but I was more focused on the movie. We had switched to Netflix and were watching some movie about... Well, I don’t know.

“It’ll be here in 30 minutes.” I nodded and covered back up. “You’re hot.” What?”

“Huh?” I felt his chest rumble with laughter.

“You’re burning up. It’s your body fighting and healing itself.” I nodded. I breathed in and it hurt so much. I’m gonna kill Jordan. He needs to stop breaking ribs. This is the third time. “How bad does it hurt?”

“Well it isn’t the first time or the second that this has happened. It hurts worse than the last two times. Honestly, I don’t know how much more of Jordan’s training my body can handle. He always goes for the ribs.” Adrian grew rigid. His body was tense. His eyes were dark and murderous. “It’s fine, honestly.”

“I really need to see your definition of fine because it’s not the same as mine.” I turned away from him. I sat up now. It was slightly easier to breathe but not by much. “Don’t be like that. I just meant that have broken ribs isn’t fine. I get that you’ve been through worse but he’s caused you this pain before. So it’s not okay or fine in my book.”

I was going to respond but there was a knock on the door. He stood up and in came his mother. “Now no funny business. Here’s some dinner. Here’s some breakfast. Angioletto, be good. I love you and should not leave AJ alone with your sister for too long. Feel better Marissa.”

“Thank you Madame.” She smiled at me. She said a few other things to Adrian but I couldn’t hear what it was. I waved bye to her as she left and Adrian came over with bowls.

“I’m sorry about here. Always expects the worst from me.” I chuckled.

“She’s sweet and cares about you. She trusts your decisions, especially when it comes to that little girl.” He looked at me shocked. “What? Her and I may have or may not of had a little talk when I picked Zaye up the first time.” There was a smile playing on his lips. “What?” He didn’t say anything. He only focused on the movie.

We ate the hamburger soup in silence. The only noise was the TV. I took both of our bowls to the sink and then went back into the living room. Adrian wasn’t to be seen so I took that time to pick a new movie. I clicked The Magicians. Clarissa has been trying to get me to watch it for awhile now. I paused it and waited for Adrian.

He came back out in shorts and he motioned for me to lay down. I did and pressed play. Even though I slept through most of it, it has been a good day with him.
