Chapter 9: Meeting Davina Gray
To say that the look on his face didn’t make me want to laugh for a century would be a huge lie!
Damien was speechless at the speed at which I drove his bike while he gave me the directions to his house. His hands were wrapped tightly around my waist as if he was fearing for his life. It was so damn funny!
The only reason as to why I wasn’t saying anything was that he was trying to get himself together as we stood at the door of his house and I didn’t want to make him feel anymore uncomfortable.
Damien opened the door and I entered his house after him. I followed him as he led me to the kitchen. Aria and a middle aged lady were talking as we entered but they stopped and turned to look at us.
“Penny!” Aria exclaimed as she saw me and she jumped from the chair she was sitting on and into my arms. I caught her before she could fall and chuckled as she giggled.
“Mom, this is Penny.” Damien introduced me to the lady who smiled at me. Her smile looked genuine and she looked like a loving and caring mother. I could tell that this lady had elegance and was kind. She looked too pretty and young to be the mother of a high school boy.
“She’s my new friend, mommy!” Aria told her mother as I placed her back on her chair. I smiled at Aria and squeezed her cheek.
“It’s nice to meet you, ma’am.” I told Damien’s mother with a small smile. She rolled her eyes at me as she got up from her seat on the chair and walked up to me.
“I’m Davina, not ma’am. You are not a boy asking my girl out. There’s no need to be so formal with me.” She told me, jokingly, as she wrapped her arms around me in a motherly hug. I returned the hug with a smile.
My own mother was out there somewhere, probably too busy to even remember having me as a daughter and here this woman who just met me was giving me a motherly hug.
“I might not be asking your daughter out but I might just ask your boy out, Mrs. Gray.” I said as I pulled away from her. She chuckled at that as Damien sighed and shook his head, looking down at the ground.
“Are you Dami’s girlfriend?” Aria asked me. I chuckled at the excitement on her face. I shook my head at her making her smile fall, making me regret telling her the truth but it was what it was. I couldn’t lie just to make her happy.
“I’m going to be late. I’m leaving. Take care!” Damien told his mother as he kissed her cheek and then kissed his sister’s forehead. “And Penny, if you need a ride home, I have already asked Xander. Just call him up.” Damien told me.
“Why? Can’t you drop me when you get back?” I asked him.
“It’ll be a little too late when I get back.” Damien told me.
“I’ll wait for you to get back. Maybe then you can drop me home yourself.” I shrugged. Damien looked hesitant.
“Damien, she’s right. If she is still here by the time you get back, you will have to drop her home.” Mrs. Gray told her son.
“Okay, mom.” Damien sighed in defeat. He couldn’t argue with his mother. I smirked at him and he just rolled his eyes before leaving off.
“It’s really nice to see another girl around Damien. Usually, parents are worried because of the number of girls they see their boy with but I’ve only seen Ellie around him. It’s nice to see someone else around him who is not like a sister to him.” Mrs. Gray told me. I chuckled at her statement.
“It’s not what you think, Mrs. G.” I told her. I didn’t want her to get the wrong idea. I did like Damien but I wasn’t looking for a relationship. Even if Damien was actually as perfect as he appeared to be, I wasn’t going to date him. I don’t believe in high school relationships. And I didn’t want to be proved right and end up with a broken heart.
“That’s what they all say.” Mrs. Gray told me with a small smirk on her face. I chuckled at that.
“I’m more of a headache to him than anything.” I told her honestly. She rolled her eyes at me.
“We’ll see, Penny.” She told me. She glanced at Aria before turning to me again. “But the thing that surprises me the most is how much my daughter loves you. Aria is not one to get so attached to strangers.” She said.
I smiled as I looked at Aria who was busy talking to the glass of milk in front of her. She really was a cute little girl. And right now she was busy chatting animatedly with the glass of milk.
“She is a really cute little girl.” I said. Mrs. Gray nodded her head in agreement.
“Now, I heard Xander and Damien talking about them getting in trouble about spray painting the back of the school building.” Mrs. Gray said, getting serious. “What was that about?” she asked me with a raised eyebrow. I chuckled at that and shook my head.
“Do you really think that your son is that creative, Mrs. G?” I asked her with a small smirk on my face. She relaxed as she smiled at me. “You don’t have to worry, Mrs. G. That was probably someone else who did it. Probably those troublemaking twins, Mason and Jason.” I told her. She nodded in agreement.
“You are probably right, Penny.” she told me. I nodded my head.
“Please turn into Dami’s hot chocolate! I promise, I’ll drink you in less than one minute!” Aria said in a loud voice. I turned to look at her to find her still talking to her glass of milk. I couldn’t help but smile as I saw her serious face requesting the glass of milk to change.
“It won’t change, Aria. Now drink your milk otherwise I won’t let you play with Penny and just send her home!” Mrs. Gray warned the little girl. Aria’s eyes grew wide before she turned to look at me for confirmation. I just shrugged and her eyes widened even more. She turned to her milk and quickly drank it.
“Very good, Ari!” I cheered for her as she kept the empty glass back on the kitchen counter. Mrs. Gray joined me as she started to clap for her daughter too.
“Can we play now?” Aria asked me. I nodded my head at her before looking at her mother.
“Mrs. G, Damien told me about how you must be tired. You can go and rest. I’ll take care of Aria.” I told her. She smiled at me.
“I can’t ask that of you. You are a guest and Damien’s friend. I’ll help you since I know how hard it is to take care of my little girl.” She told me. I shook my head at that.
“Aria is an angel. I can manage on my own. Besides, I can see how tired you are. You should go and rest. Besides, I am Damien’s friend. You can trust me with your little girl, Mrs. G.” I told her.
“It’s not that I don’t trust you. I just don’t want you to feel obliged to do this.” She told me.
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Gray. It’s alright. I actually like spending time with Aria. I wouldn’t mind.” I told her. “In fact, you can call me anytime you want me to babysit Aria. I’d happily do it for her. And it’s better if it’s someone she likes rather than someone else.” I added with a smile.
“You are an angel, honey. No wonder you have made a place for yourself in the group with Ellie and the boys.” Mrs. Gray told me. I smiled at her in return. “Be on your best behavior, Aria.” Mrs. Gray told Aria before she left the kitchen, probably to her room. I turned to Aria who was looking up at me with an excited expression.
“Do you want to go to the park or do you wanna play with your dolls?” I asked Aria.
“My dolls!” Aria exclaimed before she started dragging me to her room by my hand. I chuckled as I followed her.
