Chapter 18: Deal with the Devil
“Where were you during the lunch break?” I questioned sternly when I saw him walking up to his car. I had to run after my last class just so that I could reach his car before him and ask him as to why he had been avoiding me.
“He was avoiding you.” Jason told me in a matter-of-fact tone. I narrowed my eyes at Jason but he just shrugged as he walked over to Xander to talk before we all went home.
“Why were you avoiding me?” I asked him. He didn’t even look at me as he sighed and ran a hand through his hair, messing them up a little.
“I wasn’t avoiding you. I just had detention.” He shrugged as he tried to walk around me to get to his car. I moved to stand right in front of the door, making him groan in frustration.
“I want to know why you were in detention this time.” I demanded as I crossed my arms.
“I just said some things to Ms. Krampe and she did not like those things.” He shrugged, still not looking at me.
Oh no he didn’t!
“Mace, I know that you pissed her off just to get an excuse to avoid me.” I sighed. “Why are you avoiding me?” I asked him.
“Like you don’t know why!” Mason scoffed as he looked away. I put on my best puppy dog face as I look at him.
“Are you still scared of me?” I joked. Mason rolled his eyes at that.
“You wish, don’t you?” Mason scoffed.
“I really do.” I replied. The silence after my words was too much so I decided to break it. “I really have no idea, Macey-poo!” I told him with a sigh.
He looked at me and I could practically see his anger melting away.
“Ellie told me that you helped her in apologizing to Lena.” Mason told me. I closed my eyes as I took a deep breath, trying not to roll my eyes at him. I opened my eyes and gave Mason a forced smile.
“Her name is Leah.” I corrected him. “And why does it matter to you?” I asked him.
“I don’t care about her name!” Mason exclaimed. “She cheated on both me and Xander!” He added in a frustrated tone.
“She was just a one night stand for you and let’s not forget that Xan cheated on her too! They are even and you have nothing to be angry about!” I defended the girl I didn’t even know.
Why the hell am I even defending her?
“But she didn’t deserve an apology! And if we are keeping scores, she was going around spreading all kinds of rumours about Xan and me after everything!” Mason exclaimed, throwing his hands up in the air.
I sighed. I could feel that there was more to the topic than what Mason was letting on. I knew that he would open up about it to me if we fought about it. I had to approach the subject in a different way.
“You know, Ellie was feeling much better after apologizing to her. Maybe we should be happy about it and not think about whether she deserved the apology or not.” I reasoned, my voice coming out soft.
“Whatever!” Mason said as he looked away. I wrapped my arms around Mason’s waist and rested my head on his chest.
“Tell me, what is the real reason that you are so bothered by the whole thing?” I asked him. He sighed as he wrapped his arms around me. He was silent for a while and I gave him the time he wanted as he started playing with my hair.
“Lana was dating my best friend and she still spent the night with me. People think that it didn’t affect me but I still feel awkward around Xander when I remember her.” Mason sighed.
I pulled away just a little so that I could look at his face. He looked a little awkward talking about this. I could see the truth on his face.
“You don’t even remember her name! How can you expect anyone to know that she makes you feel so awkward?” I frowned. Mason rolled his eyes before looking right into my eyes.
“She is still a sore subject. And even if Ellie feels better after apologizing to her, I can’t. Not until she realises what she did.” Mason told me. “She could have spoiled my friendship with Xander!” He added.
“I understand that, Mace. And I support you on that.” I smiled at him. Mason smiled back before he pushed my head to his chest and hugged me tightly.
“You know, you are a very huggable person.” Mason told me. I chuckled at that.
“Love birds alert!” I heard Jason shouting from somewhere behind me.
“Sorry, Damien. You’re too late. It looks like Mason and Penny are a couple now.” I heard Xander’s voice.
I pulled away from Mason and turned around to find Xander and Jason smirking at me and Mason while Damien looked at me with an expressionless face.
I rolled my eyes with a sigh. These people sometimes reminded me how they were still high school kids and not some mature and responsible adults.
As if any of them could ever pass as an adult!
Wait… Maybe Damien can…
Damien walked up to me and casually wrapped an arm around my waist before leaning down and pecking my lips. I was confused and I am sure that my face was showing my confusion.
“There. She’s mine again.” Damien told Xander and Jason. I rolled my eyes.
Why did I ever think that he can pass as a mature and responsible person?
“I belong to no one!” I told Damien. He turned to me with a glare which made me roll my eyes again. I felt Mason’s arms wrapping around my waist.
“But she is my hugging-buddy!” Mason said as he placed his chin on my shoulder. I rolled my eyes before elbowing him and pulling away from him.
“Aria will literally kill you if she heard that, Mace!” Jason joked, earning a chuckle from Xander and I. Mason just groaned in pain as he held his side where I elbowed him.
I turned to Damien to see him smirking at Mason. I sighed as I prepared myself for the conversation I needed to have with Damien.
Do I really want to talk to him about this?
That was a million dollar question…
“Can I please talk to you?” I asked Damien. He looked at my face before he furrowed his eyebrows. It was as if he knew what I was going to say.
Believe me, I don’t want to say what I am about to say either!
“You are talking to him, Penny.” Jason pointed out the obvious. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes.
“Alone.” I said as I gave Jason the ‘duh’ look. Damien was still looking at me as if he could read my mind through my face. As if it wasn’t my face but my journal with my deepest, darkest secrets.
“Oh!” Jason exclaimed. “I wonder what you would want to talk about.” He smirked at me.
“She is just breaking up with Damien to come to me.” Mason spoke in a smug voice. Damien’s jaw visibly clenched as he glared at Mason. I turned to Mason with a bored expression.
“I am not coming to you, Mace.” I deadpanned. “And if I had to choose between you and Damien, let’s not forget who my prince is.” I childishly stuck out my tongue.
I turned to Damien and took his hand in mine before I started dragging him away.
I knew for a fact that if we would have stayed for another minute, one of the three idiots might have said something or the other to make Damien super angry and having this conversation with him when he was feeling pissed wasn’t an option.
“Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!” I heard Xander yelling after us and I rolled my eyes without turning back to even look at him.
Damien didn’t even protest as he walked with me as I led him back into the school building. I led him to an empty classroom. I closed the door before turning to Damien.
He was looking at me with a cautious look which made me a little nervous but I took a deep breath and calmed myself.
“So…” I spoke nervously as I played with my fingers.
“Why do I get the feeling that I am not going to like what you have to say?” Damien asked me in a careful voice.
“Because I am 99% percent sure that you won’t.” I answered him with a sheepish smile.
“What is it about, Penny?” Damien asked me as he crossed his arms.
“I kinda need you to go out with Leah.” I told him, coming straight to the point, not even trying to beat around the bush.
Damien’s jaw clenched tightly as he glared at me. His eyes showed how furious he was. His hands fell to his side as he closed his eyes and took deep breaths.
“I am not going out with anyone.” Damien told me with a finality in his voice.
“Just hear me out first!” I said when he turned around to walk out of the classroom. Damien slowly turned back to me.
“I don’t have to hear you out, Penny. I know how to connect the dots. Ellie told us how she apologized to that girl. I am sure that she might have told you that she’ll only forgive Ellie if I went out with her.” Damien said in a low and angry tone.
“Listen-” I started to speak but Damien cut me off.
“How can you even think that I would go out with anyone else?” Damien asked me, his voice showing the accusation.
“I am sorry, Damien.” I said in a small voice. He narrowed his eyes on me. “I know that you don’t want to go out with her but can’t you just go on one date?” I asked. “For me?” I added with a pout.
Damien scoffed as he shook his head. Anger was radiating off of him in waves at this point.
“For you, I would definitely not go on a stupid date with that girl who by the way, didn’t deserve any apologies!” he hissed. He was about to turn around when my next words stopped him.
“What if I offer something in return?” I asked him. That caught his attention as he glared at me.
“What can you possibly have to offer?” He asked.
“Your sister loves me, right? I’ll babysit her whenever you want. I would cancel any prior plans if I have any and be there for her. No questions asked!” I offered, quickly. My tone was rushed due to desperation.
I could see the wheels turning in Damien’s head as he thought about my offer. He was really considering my offer now. I should have been happy or hopeful but I felt a little scared for some reason.
“Whenever I want?” Damien asked, a dangerous edge in his voice warning me to be careful.
What is he up to?
“Well, till I am here.” I said in a careful tone.
“How many times will you do this?” he asked.
Why is he asking me this?
“Unlimited times.” I answered without missing a beat.
“No questions asked?” he questioned, his expression carefully guarded. I bit my lip, nervously.
Why is he asking all these questions?
“That’s what I said.” I answered nervously.
I was seriously having doubts about the whole thing but I knew that I couldn’t back out now and neither could I take my words back.
Damien smirked as he walked up to me.
“Then I guess we have a deal.” he told me with an evil looking smirk as he placed a small kiss on my cheek before he turned around and left me alone in the room.
Did I do the right thing? Or did I just make a deal with the devil himself?
Me: I want your honest opinions! Leah or Penny? Who should be with Damien?
Penny: As long as I am happy, I don’t care. *shrugs*
Damien: Hey! I don’t want to end up with Leah!
Me: I’ll make sure to change her a little if people choose her.
Damien: Can’t I have any better options?
Xander: *smirking* What about Sarah?
Damien: God no!
Kara: You’re talking about my best friend. *glaring at Damien*
Damien: She’s still the same girl who insulted Ellie. Well, she tried to.
Kara: People make mistakes...
Me: And people can change. Especially imaginary ones. Especially when the author wants.
Jason: You are going to change her?
Me: That’s another question for people. Should we give Leah and Sarah and Ethan or any two or any one of them?
Damien: Comment your views! My life depends on it. Literally.
Mason: But Penny and Damien are going to end up together, right?
Me: *in an evil tone* You don’t know that...
Penny: Do you? *narrowing her eyes on me*
Me: *frowning* No. I haven’t written that part yet...
Damien: Please just don’t kill me!
Me: I love you too much to do that! At least I think I do...
Damien: Hey! That wasn’t too reassuring!
Me: Anyways, I might take a break next week. I just wanted to warn everyone...
