Chapter 26: Detention is never just Detention
I hate high school!
They should have rules about all this! They should have written that all in the handbook! Or in the ‘How to survive high school 101’!
I mean, how was I supposed to know that hitting the dodge ball with a little too much force at the girl who went out with the guy I am starting to like is something that’ll land you in detention?
Okay, putting it that way sounds like it really was my fault…
And how was I supposed to know that being the Principal’s niece, who is actually more of his daughter, wouldn’t save me from detention?
That is so not fair!
So, due to the unclear rules, which by the way have not been written anywhere, I was sitting in detention while everyone else went home.
Why couldn’t I just go home too? Leah only got a mild concussion from hitting her head on the wall, which by the way wasn’t even my fault!
Curse you, life!
I wouldn’t even have done what I did if she wouldn’t have started talking about her date with Damien and how they are going to end up together.
She should be in detention too for provoking me!
I huffed out as I put my head down on the table while the others around me did god knows what and the teacher in-charge read a magazine about cats…
“I saw the throw you aimed at Leah and I have to say, I was impressed.” I heard a voice saying.
“I wasn’t trying to impress anyone.” I groaned in reply, hoping that whoever it was would get the hint that I wasn’t in the mood to talk.
“But it was really funny!” The guy spoke again.
I guess some people are naturally dumb…
“Penny?” I heard another voice say which made me raise my head immediately.
“What are you doing here?” I gasped when I saw Damien standing in front of me. I looked at the teacher’s table in panic only to find him gone which made me sigh in relief.
“Mason is distracting him with his chicken dance.” Damien answered my question before I could even think of it.
“That doesn’t explain why you are here!” I scolded him. He glared at me.
“Why did you convince the art teacher that me knocking over all the paint and running away was an honest mistake?” He questioned, glaring at me.
Is he really that big of an idiot?
I hope not because I don’t like idiots!
“To save you from landing your ass in detention!” I shot back, rolling my eyes at him. “It’s bad enough that I am stuck here. I didn’t want you to be stuck here too.” I grumbled.
I want to kill a zombie right about now! Boring situations make me angry!
“Did you stop to even think that maybe that’s what I was aiming for?” Damien inquired.
“What? Why would you want to go to hell?” I frowned. Damien breathed out as he looked around before turning his eyes back to me.
“Maybe because I didn’t want you to be alone?” he huffed.
“Damien… That’s literally the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me!” I told him as I got up and wrapped my arms around his neck.
He is such a sweet guy!
“But you got me out of trouble! You weren’t supposed to do that!” Damien grumbled, pulling away. I smiled at his grumpiness.
“It’s the thought that counts. Thank you.” I told him, sincerely. “Now get out before the teacher in-charge gets back!” I chuckled as I tried to push him to the door.
“I wanted to be here for you and you ruined it and now you’re trying to make me leave?” he asked, incredulously.
“I appreciate it but I would like it better if you stay out of detention. I want to be a good influence on you. I don’t want you to intentionally get into trouble because of me!” I explained.
“I don’t care!” He exclaimed. I sighed as I massaged my forehead. “This is not how it is supposed to go! I should be in detention with you, keeping you company!” He added.
“I don’t want that, Damien!” I groaned.
“But I do!” He almost whined like a kid.
“You did it for me and I don’t want it! Please go home or go and hang out with the others!” I cried out a little too loudly.
I really don’t wanna do this right now…
“Damien! The teacher is about to come back! Mason can’t keep him away for long!” Jason called from the door of the room. “Oh! Hi, Penny!” He smiled when he saw me.
“Hey, Jay-Jay!” I waved at him.
“Nice shot back in PE!” He chuckled. I rolled my eyes at him.
“Just leave now. And take Damien with you.” I told him as I sat back in my seat.
“But-” Damien started to argue but I cut him off.
“Please just go before the teacher comes back! We’ll talk about this later.” I told him.
I could see that he wanted to argue but he just clenched his jaw before turning around and leaving the room with Jason.
“Well, that was something…” someone behind me said. I turned around to come face-to-face with Ethan.
Ugh! Could this get any worse?
“What the hell do you want?” I asked him with an emotionless face. His face only reminds me of how manipulative he really is.
Would I get in trouble if I punched him in the face? After all, I’m already in detention. What else would they do?
“I was just trying to talk to you. I thought we were on good terms.” He frowned.
Oh! So he thinks we were on good terms?
“I don’t talk to manipulative jerks!” I scoffed before turning back to face the empty teacher’s table.
Mason might not be stopping the teachers anymore so where is he?
“What do you mean?” Ethan questioned. I clenched my jaw in anger. “I thought you knew that I was trying to change!” He commented when I didn’t reply.
“That was before I realised that you can never change, Ethan?” I informed him. “And I am not going to fall for your lies anymore. So quit it already!” I added.
“I really have no idea what you are talking about, Penny!” He exclaimed.
“So you don’t remember telling me that you will try to change and then slipping a note in Leah’s locker saying that Damien would like to take her on another date?” I sneered at the blonde manipulator.
Ethan frowned at my words for a few seconds before I saw something clicking in his eyes. His eyes grew wide in realisation as he looked at me with guilt shining in his eyes.
“I forgot about that!” He said to himself. “Shit!” He cursed.
“Yeah, well, don’t try to mess with any of us again or else the locker prank will be the least of your worries!” I warned him with a deadly glare.
He turned to me, his expression showing how hurt he felt.
“You were the one behind that prank?” He asked. I smirked in reply. “I thought that it was Sarah…” He trailed off.
“Why would Sarah do that?” I chuckled.
I thought he would have already figured out that it was me…
“Well, because I refused when she asked me to help her in trying to break Xander and Ellie up again.” Ethan replied. “I really thought that you and I were on better terms.” He muttered.
What the hell?
“You made me think that you were trying to change and then you made that crazy girl become even crazier about Damien!” I snapped. “How can we be on better terms?” I asked.
“Because that was an honest mistake.” He told me.
“And you really think I would believe that?” I chuckled humorlessly.
“I did plant that note but that was before we had that chat, Penny. I forgot about it after that.” He explained. “I really am sorry about it!” He added.
I frowned at his words.
Was he telling the truth? Should I believe him?
“How can I believe you?” I asked him.
“Ask anyone. Ask Leah when she found her note. I swear I didn’t do anything to upset you after our talk! I really am trying to change.” He replied.
Maybe I should give him the benefit of the doubt…
I mulled over everything in my head before finally sighing out loud.
“I’ll give you another chance.” I told him.
“By going on a date with me.” He smirked.
“What? No!” I yelled.
“Why? You did prank me when I didn’t do anything wrong. This is the least you can do.” He said, grinning like an idiot.
“Okay, fine!” I huffed.
Just then, the teacher walked in with Mason.
“What are you doing here?” I asked Mason, incredulously. Mason was pouting as he glared at the floor.
“I just did my chicken dance and he gave me detention!” Mason grumbled pointing to the teacher.
The teacher rolled his eyes before going to sit down on his seat.
“You’re an idiot!” I told Mason with a chuckle.
“What? I was just trying to help Damien! He wanted to come to be with you in detention just like Xander once did for Ellie.” Mason whined.
“Xander did that for Ellie?” I asked him.
“Well, Xander came to save me and Jason from Ellie when she was going to kill us for landing her in detention.” He shrugged.
Wow! So he wanted us to be like Xander and Ellie…
“That’s… something.” I said more to myself than to anyone else.
That would explain why he was so angry when I asked him to leave me be. He wanted to be there just like Xander was there for Ellie. And he didn’t want me to save him from detention just like Ellie didn’t save Xander then…
Why does it feel like he wants to be with someone like Ellie?
Me: Hey, guys!
Penny: How was the chapter?
Damien: Do share your opinions. Even someone like me is starting to talk about what all goes on in my head!
Ellie: And your comments will make the updates more frequent!
Mason: Anyways, the next update will be up on 25th July 2021.
Xander: Which is Sunday.
Me: There’s just a celebration on that day at my place so I might update a day earlier or a day later so no promises for punctuality!
Penny: So, VOTE/LIKE, COMMENT and SHARE!
Jason: Until next time, stay safe.
Me and Mason: *screaming* AND EAT CAKE!
