Chapter 27: Laser-Tag
You can do this Penny! This is do or die!
I clutched the gun closer to me as I looked around to see if I could spot anyone. Just then, he walked up to me and crouched down next to me.
“I saw the last few people hiding behind that wall.” He whispered as he looked around. “I don’t think anyone else is left.” He frowned.
“Why are you telling me this?” I asked, my voice not above a whisper.
“Because your aim is obviously better than mine!” He whispered back. I rolled my eyes, trying to hide my smile.
“I am obviously the champion of laser-tag!” I shrugged. Ethan chuckled and nodded his head in agreement.
After realizing that Damien was just trying to recreate a moment that Xander and Ellie had, I needed a little time away from all of them. And since I had to go on a date with Ethan anyway, I decided to get it over with as soon as possible.
So here we were…
Surprisingly, Ethan didn’t take me to the cliché places like a diner or a restaurant or on a picnic or even to the movies.
According to him, he wanted us to do something out of the ordinary so that I never forget this date with him and can give him a real chance at being a possible boyfriend for me. And as much as I hate to say this, I was actually considering it…
I know… I don’t even believe myself!
“Okay, aim at the wall. I’ll try to make them come out.” I whispered over to Ethan before slowly walking nearer to where he told me the others were.
Come one, Penny! You’re just a minute away from victory!
As soon as I spotted them, I gave out a battle-cry, pretending to be an amazon warrior, as I started shooting at them.
Soon, the game was over with only me and Ethan left, winning the game.
That’s right, I really am the champion!
“What do you want to do now?” Ethan asked, trying to stop laughing from how I shouted like I just won a battle, which I actually did.
“I don’t know. You brought me here. It’s your call.” I shrugged, not being able to remove the smile from my face due to how happy I was at the moment.
Ethan took deep breaths, finally being able to stop himself from laughing. He frowned as he stared at the floor as if he was thinking very hard.
“I actually thought that you were going to tell me that you are leaving.” He muttered under his breath but since I was right next to him, I heard it.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Well, you know, since you consider me to be your enemy, I thought you would leave as soon as possible so I didn’t have anything planned after that game.” He replied, scratching the back of his head nervously.
I pressed my lips together, not replying instantly because what he said was actually true.
When I agreed to the date, I actually planned on leaving as soon as I could but now, I didn’t want this date to end since I was having a lot of fun.
“I am hungry.” I spoke, changing the subject. “I want some burgers!” I added when I saw a fast-food restaurant.
“Okay, come on!” Ethan smiled as he took my hand and led me to the restaurant. I took my seat as he went to order for us.
As I was looking around, I spotted an angry face looking at me through the door of the restaurant which made me freeze.
What… How… Why is he here?
He stormed up to me, gripping my elbow, making me stand up. I gulped as I stared at him wide-eyed.
“Why?” He asked in a calm yet scary voice. “Why, Penny?” He asked again when I didn’t answer. I gulped before looking away.
“What do you mean?” I asked, trying to act innocent. I was well aware of what he was talking about but his angry face somehow made me feel guilty.
“Why are you here with Ethan? I thought that we all warned you to stay away from him!” He fumed. I bit my lip, thinking of a reply.
I looked back at him and the calm expression and angry eyes made me realise that I shouldn’t lie.
I mean, I am not doing anything wrong here!
“I realised that I might have gone a little overboard with the whole locker prank so as a way of saying sorry, he asked me to go out with him.” I explained truthfully.
He was silent for a moment as he searched my face for god knows what.
Why is he not saying anything?
God! This feels so awkward!
“Why is a date always your way of saying sorry?” He asked finally.
I sighed in relief. It was honestly a little too awkward to stand in silence with his judgy eyes on me when I don’t even know what he is capable of.
He’s practically a stranger to me!
“I know that it’s super annoying but I don’t know why.” I shrugged. He sighed as he ran his hand over his face.
I am so annoying!
I think that I am more annoying than that stupid bun on my head that wouldn’t match his twin when I tried to make double buns.
God! I am super annoying!
Eh! Who cares!
“I won’t tell Damien.” Liam groaned. “But I think you should tell him before Ethan finds a way to use this to drive a wedge between you and Damien.” He advised.
“I’ll tell everyone as soon as I get home. I would have told you all sooner but I knew that you guys would have found a way to talk me out of it.” I remarked.
“True.” Liam chuckled.
I looked at the counter to see that Ethan was now placing the order for our burgers.
“He isn’t that bad, you know.” I told Liam. I looked back at Liam. “Ethan. He is not as bad as you think.” I said when he looked confused.
Liam rolled his eyes at me before chuckling humorlessly. He glared in Ethan’s direction before turning back to me.
“He almost destroyed Xander and Ellie’s relationship. According to me, that’s more than evil.” He stated.
“He uncovered secrets that could have actually destroyed any chances of them ever wanting to even look at each other again.” I argued.
From what I have gathered from all the gossip still floating around and from what they have told me, Xander was actually hiding the fact that he didn’t ask Ellie out because he loved her.
Apparently, Xander asked her out because he knew that she would choose him. Ellie’s other close friend had asked her out and Xander wanted to make sure that she wouldn’t leave with him.
So, being the stupid guy he is, Xander lied to Ellie and became her boyfriend.
Ethan’s schemes and plans did nothing but uncovered that truth. In a way, Ethan just forced Xander to tell Ellie the truth.
Even though he used trickery to make Xander confess, I believe that what he did wasn’t entirely wrong. After all, he did back off after that.
“Don’t take his side, Penny. You’re our friend. And friends support each other no matter what. Believe me, Ethan is not the good guy you think him to be.” Liam warned.
“Friends also correct each other when they are wrong.” I remarked. I crossed my arms as I gave him a challenging look.
Liam scoffed before looking at something behind me. His face showed disgust before he turned back to me.
“Be careful, Penny. We are your friends. And when he shows his true colors, we’ll be the ones who’ll be there to wipe your tears.” He sneered before he turned around and left.
Wow! That was dramatic…
I took a deep breath before shaking my head.
Don’t let anyone tell you what to do, Penny. Do what you think is right!
I nodded to myself before I turned to take my seat but I froze when I saw Ethan standing right behind me with an emotionless face.
“They really do hate me, don’t they?” He spoke, his voice calm yet disappointed.
“That doesn’t mean that you deserve it.” I told him. Ethan narrowed his eyes on me. “I mean, from what I have seen, you like pulling pranks yet you have a good side too.” I shrugged.
His lips pulled up at the corner in a small smirk as he sat down, placing the tray on the table.
“I do love some good pranks.” He chuckled to himself. “Do you wanna pull a prank on the principal?” He asked. My eyes grew wide as I gulped.
“Let’s save that for some other time.” I chuckled nervously. “I am sure we can find some naïve freshmen to prank for now.” I added for good measure.
He frowned at my words. He studied my face as if trying to read my mind.
“Are you scared of pulling a prank on the principal?” He questioned.
“Me? Scared?” I scoffed. “You’re not ready for something like that, sweetheart. That requires a certain level of expertise.” I said, flipping my hair back.
Ethan chuckled, shaking his head.
“Whatever.” He said before he started eating his burger.
Phew! That was close!
