Chapter 28: The Friend Who Ghosted Us

“Please no!” I cried as the others around me groaned. Kara was already asleep while the rest of us were almost in tears.

This is pure torture!

“But why?” Mason asked innocently, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion.

“Because we are dying here!” Xander wailed loudly as he rested his head on Ellie’s shoulder. Ellie nodded her head in agreement.

They both are so adorable together…

“Can you guys be quiet?” Liam hissed, wrapping his arm around Kara’s sleeping figure. “Kara is sleeping!” He pointed at her.

How can she sleep through this torture? Is she even alive?

I could see her chest moving as she breathed which told me that she wasn’t dead yet. She was just sleeping peacefully while we all fought for our lives.

“And we are dying!” I sobbed. Jason rolled his eyes as he sat down next to me with a pout on his face.

“It was not my fault that this idiot started fighting!” He grumbled as he glared at the floor.

“I know, Jay-Jay.” I told him. “But you could have kept quiet and let him do whatever the hell he wanted.” I reasoned.

“And let him win? Never!” Jason answered, crossing his arms. I sighed as I wrapped an arm around his before resting my head on his shoulder.

Don’t judge me! Jason has the world’s comfiest shoulder!

“I think my brain is dead.” I mumbled, closing my eyes. Jason untangled his arm from mine before wrapping it around my shoulders.

“I am sorry.” Jason sighed. I hummed in reply, snuggling closer to him.

How can someone be comfier than my pillow? Is Jason secretly a superhero named Mr. Pillows?

Or Mr. Snuggles?

Or simply Mr. Comfy?

“I am sorry-er!” Mason’s voice from my other side said. I opened one eye and looked at his pouty face. I raised an eyebrow at him, sitting up.

“You are not. You’re still trying to compete with him.” I pointed out.

For the past three hours, the two dumbos have been competing with each other on the stupidest of things.

At first, we all were blissfully ignoring them but about two hours ago, they paused the movie we were watching and started their ‘who’s better than who’ battle.

Their senseless battle was interesting to watch at first but when they didn’t even pause for a water break and didn’t even let any of us leave, it became torturous.

It was more tortuous than the feeling of being sleepy and not being able to sleep…

Well, that wasn’t a good example… I guess, I was just feeling too mentally drained to even make sense.

“I am. I really am!” Mason protested.

“Then apologise to Jason” I told him.

“No way!” Mason scoffed, looking at his brother over the top of my head.

“That means that you are not sorry!” Jason smirked. I sighed, rolling my eyes.

“Both of you need to apologise. To each other and to us all!” I clarified.

“What? Why?” They both whined together. Their expressions were similar.

These were the times when telling them apart was almost impossible and controlling my laughter was almost impossible.

“How can you two be so much in sync yet fight at every chance you get?” I mused.

The two brothers looked at each other, their expressions turning from whiny to scowling as they glared at each other. That too in sync.

Are they mirror images of each other or what?

“I am not in sync with this psycho!” They both snapped together. “Stop it!” They snapped at each other while they started their glare-battle.

“Guys! Please don’t start this all over again!” I groaned, pushing them away from me. They were sandwiching me in between as they glared at each other.

“Ask him to stop!” They both replied in sync. “Hey! Stop it!” They said to each other, still speaking in sync.

This is freaky…

“Let’s just try to change the subject.” I suggested. They were still glaring at each other, ignoring me.

“It’s weird how you two now surround her like bees surround honey.” Ellie frowned as she looked at the three of us.

“What do you mean?” The twins asked together.

This is super freaky!

“I mean, you two have been hanging out with her more than you have been hanging out with me.” Ellie pouted.

“And you have been hanging out with Xan more than you have been hanging out with us.” The boys shot back, still in sync with each other.

Freaking flying bunnies! How can they say that?

Ellie gasped as Xander wrapped his arm around her.

“Boys! Behave!” Xander glared at the twins.

“Penny is always up for stupid talks, movies, burgers and everything we want. She’s there while you’d rather be with Xan.” Mason snapped.

While I was glad that their freaky in sync thing was over, I was dreading the fight that was brewing up. I knew that all the friends in the world fought but I didn’t want these people to fight.

These people were a tight-knit circle of people who somehow found each other and have managed to stick together through everything. They were practically a fantasy. I didn’t want to see them fighting. Especially not because of me.

“How can you say that? I am always there whenever you need me!” Ellie gulped, trying to keep her voice strong.

“Well, friends require more than that. Friends actually hang out with each other even if they have boyfriends.” Jason spoke up this time.

“Guys! Why are you saying all this?” I stepped in as I looked between the twins. “She’s your best friend! Why are you being so rude?” I tried to knock some sense into them.

They both were quiet as they glared at the floor. They were still breathing heavily and their jaws were clenched which told me that they were still not back to their normal goofy selves.

I sighed as I rubbed both of their backs, trying to make them relax and calm down. Ellie had tears in her eyes which she was desperately trying to hide.

This is so not good!

“Penny, I think you should step away from them.” Liam whispered to me. “Ellie was feeling a little jealous of you because they are always with you. Maybe you should step away for a while.” He explained.

I nodded my head in understanding. I was just about to get up when both Mason and Jason wrapped their arms around me, making me sit back.

“Why should she leave? She didn’t do anything wrong!” Mason growled at Liam.

“Ellie being too occupied with Xander isn’t Penny’s fault!” Jason agreed with his brother’s statement.

“That is not what I said.” Liam sighed. “I never said that it was her fault!” He groaned.

This somehow managed to wake Kara up. She was still a little groggy as she looked at all of us with confusion written on her face.

“What happened?” She questioned as she furrowed her eyebrows. I gave her a tight smile, trying to tell her to not say anything but apparently she was too naïve to see that. “Ellie, are you crying?” she asked as she looked at Ellie with a worried expression.

“Everything is fine, Kara.” Ellie sniffled. She quickly wiped the tear that fell on her cheek and tried to smile at Kara.

“No it’s not!” Kara said as she got up and walked up to Ellie and Xander. “What happened?” She asked in a soft voice.

“Good going, Elle! Play the victim with your tears and all.” Mason scoffed. My eyes grew wide as I stared at him in shock.

“Mason!” I exclaimed, trying to make him realise what he was doing.

“He is actually right. You always play the victim with your tears and sobs. Always!” Jason spoke up. I turned to him, shocked.

This is so unexpected! What should I do?

“Stop it, guys!” Xander ordered, glaring at the twins as he pulled Ellie close to his chest. Ellie was sobbing uncontrollably now.

“Why? Are we lying about something?” Mason shot back. I gasped at the hostility in his voice.

What has gotten into him?

“Stop it guys!” I yelled. “You both are not thinking straight right now. You are saying things you both will regret later!” I informed them.

I’ve said and done a lot of things that I still regret. Once you do or say something emotionally scarring, you can never take your words back.

And that’s the worst punishment ever!

“Oh! I won’t regret telling her the truth!” Jason said.

Crazy clowns! Why the hell is he saying all this?

“Stop it!” Kara exclaimed. “Can’t you see how much it’s hurting her?” She said, pointing at Ellie who was sobbing in Xander’s arms.

“That’s normal for her. Clinging to Xander when she should be facing her friends.” Jason rolled his eyes.

“Jason! Stop!” I shouted.

How can they say all that?

“Are you forgetting who you are talking to?” Liam asked, gritting his teeth. “She’s Ellie! Our best friend!” He boomed.

“The same friend who ghosted us to go on dates with Xander!” Jason replied.

Oh god!

“Stop saying such mean things to her!” Kara wailed.

“Who are you saying all these things for? Huh? Her?” Liam asked in anger as he pointed his finger at me.

Oh no…

“Leave her out of this!” Jason growled.

“Why? Do you even know who she is going out with?” Liam asked in a dark voice full of anger.

“Leave her out of all this!” Mason grunted.

“And whoever it is, at least she is not abandoning her friends!” Jason defended me.

“Oh really? Even if she’s dating the enemy?” Liam asked. Everyone went silent. “Even if she’s dating Ethan?” He asked with a smirk on his face.
