Chapter 33: That's All I Knew
“You should be working on trying to get over your crush on Ellie instead of punching that punching bag like it is your worst enemy.” Mason advised as he eyed me while drinking his lemonade.
That lemonade was for the people who were actually doing something other than nothing…
“You should be looking at Ellie’s gross looking pictures or something.” Jason said as he poked the punching bag in front of him.
That is a punching bag. Not a freaking poking bag!
The three of us were currently at the boxing club where I usually prepare for my matches. I was going to come here alone but these two tagged along since they had nothing better to do. Their words not mine…
But they weren’t doing anything here either… That is if you don’t count annoying me as something…
“Why did you even come here? I thought that your coach gave you a break after you smashed that guy like hulk in your last match…” Mason frowned.
That guy just looked like Ethan! It’s not my fault that it was super easy to picture him as Ethan…
“Yeah. You should be working on your feelings for Ellie.” Jason said, taking off his hand wrap.
Why the hell did he even wear them? He didn’t even throw a single punch even in the air!
“I don’t have a crush on Ellie.” I grunted. “If anything, she’s like Aria to me. Just a little older. A tad bit more mature and a lot less princess-y.” I grumbled, punching the punching bag even harder, trying to drown out the reality.
I just wish that I could have put Ethan’s picture on the punching bag…
The bag probably wouldn’t have survived after that…
“We both heard what Penny said. We know the truth. You don’t have to lie in front of us.” Jason sighed. I could detect the sympathy in his voice which made me clench my jaw in anger.
I freaking hate sympathy when I don’t even need it!
“I don’t like Ellie!” I exclaimed, throwing a hard punch after each word.
My hands were numb at this point. I knew that they were going to hurt like hell later but I was looking forward to the pain.
Maybe that pain will make me forget about everything else…
“To move on, you need to stop denying it.” Mason told me in a matter-of-fact tone.
I clenched my jaw. I stopped throwing my punches, breathing heavily due to the exercise and maybe even due to anger.
I just want to break something right about now!
“I really don’t like Ellie in that way.” I replied, not turning to face them. I didn’t want to hit them if they had disbelief written on their faces.
I don’t want to murder these idiots. Even if they are super annoying…
I took a deep breath, controlling the rage before I glanced at the twins. They were looking at me with an expression of disbelief just as I guessed. I turned back to the punching bag, taking deep breaths.
I need to calm down… I am not in a mood to attend their funeral… Or to go to jail…
“Next maybe you’ll tell us that you don’t even like Penny. And that you are actually in love with Xan.” Mason rolled his eyes. Jason snickered at his brother’s words.
Breathe in… Breathe out…
“I do like Penny. Maybe a little too much.” I shrugged, going back to throwing pouches at the punching bag. “But Ellie is practically a sister to me.” I told them seriously.
I wish they would get it already…
“You don’t have to lie to us, Damien. We are here to help you.” Jason sighed.
“I am not lying!” I groaned in frustration. I took a deep breath, keeping my fists clenched so that I don’t throw a punch at them. I turned to look at the twins. “I might have had a crush on her when we were little but she’s a sister to me now.” I clarified.
“But you said… Penny said… You agreed…” Jason stumbled over his words, not knowing what to say.
“I lied.” I sighed.
“What?” Mason shrieked a little too loudly. I wanted to wince at his tone but I resisted.
“What the hell are you talking about?” Jason gasped.
“Why the hell would you lie about something like that? Did you not know what was at stake?” Mason belted, throwing his arms up in the air.
“It was the right thing to do.” I sighed. “I knew what was at stake but I did it anyway because it was the right thing to do.” I told them.
I started taking off the hand wrap as I sat down next to Mason on the floor.
“Are you nuts?” Mason yelled right next to my ear. I winced as I rubbed my poor ear.
This guy needs to learn how to control the volume of his voice…
“You are crazy!” Jason whispered, shaking his head at me.
He’s probably right…
I sighed as I flexed my hands. My hands were hurting just like I thought that they would. But it still wasn’t enough to make me forget everything.
“Why did you do that, Damien?” Mason asked, his voice almost inaudible.
“Penny was right to some extent.” I shrugged, chuckling humorlessly. “I was trying to recreate what happened between Ellie and Xander.” I admitted.
And I regret that…
“Why?” Jason questioned as he sat down next to me. “If you didn’t want to compare Penny with Ellie, then why?” He asked.
I sighed. That was the question of the hour, right? Why the hell did I do it…
“Xander and Ellie are the only happy couple I really know. I mean, I haven’t seen my parents together in so long. My dad’s always away and mom’s always working. I don’t really know what couples look like except for what I’ve seen with Xan and Ellie.” I explained.
“So… You wanted to be with Penny just like Xan is with Ellie?” Mason frowned.
“I wanted us to be happy together like they were. I don’t know what couples really do.” I shrugged.
“But then why didn’t you tell that to Penny?” Jason questioned. I bit my lip as rage started clouding my mind again.
I wish I could have beaten Ethan up in the boxing ring…
“Because I knew that she didn’t want to be with me. She wanted to give Ethan a chance.” I answered. “Besides, she told me from the start that she didn’t want me as a boyfriend.” I said in a small voice.
Why does it hurt to say that?
“Damien, she said that she doesn’t want a boyfriend. She never said that she didn’t want you as her boyfriend.” Jason remarked.
“And she wanted to give dating a try. And Ethan seemed like the only one offering that when you made her feel as if you liked Ellie and not her.” Mason continued.
Were they telling the truth?
“It’s too late anyways.” I sighed, running a hand through my hair.
It’s too late… She’s with Ethan now…
“No, it’s not.” Mason said.
“They haven’t even been on a second date!” Jason exclaimed.
“You still have a chance, boxer boy!” Mason cheered.
“She doesn’t want to be with me.” I replied, getting up. I walked up to my water bottle but before I could pick it up, Jason snatched it away.
“How can you just give up so easily?” Jason scoffed. “Why don’t you want to fight for her?” He asked.
“Don’t you like her?” Mason questioned.
“I do like her. I just…” I sighed, not knowing how to complete that sentence.
“What? Are you too lazy to go and tell her the truth?” Jason demanded. I clenched my fists in anger.
He’s my friend. I can’t punch him…
“Why didn’t you just tell her the truth when you had the chance? Why did you just accept her accusations?” Mason asked.
“Do you want her to be with Ethan?” Jason questioned.
“I don’t want her to be with that douchebag! I just don’t want to be rejected by her!” I yelled. I took a deep breath to calm myself down when I realised what I just said.
“Damien, she won’t.” Jason whispered.
“I am not experienced with all the boyfriend crap. She deserves someone who knows what he is doing.” I told them. “Ethan seems to know what he is doing.” I added in a whisper, not having the courage to say that part loudly.
“Maybe she could teach you.” Jason said.
“But what if Ethan has already asked her to be his girlfriend?” I asked, my voice cracked a little.
“He hasn’t. Ellie told me that Cassie, Sarah’s cousin, was in town. She and Penny are friends. They have been hanging out a lot.” Jason stated.
“Penny even refused to go on a second date with Ethan for some reason.” Mason spoke up. “They are not totally blown off but Penny is not going out with him anytime soon.” He added.
“You still have a chance.” Jason told me.
“What should I do then?” I asked them, feeling totally clueless.
“Ask Penny out. Explain everything to her. Win her back.” Mason said as if he was telling me some war plan.
“Ethan might be changing but I still don’t like him. I don’t want to welcome him into our group.” Jason said. “So, you can’t lose Penny to him.” He ordered.
“But how do I win her over?” I asked them.
“First of all, explain everything to her.” Jason commanded.
“I can do that.” I breathed.
“Then take her to Aria!” Mason dictated. I frowned as I looked at him.
“Why would I take her to Aria? Aria will take all her attention!” I exclaimed.
“But she’d find a way to make you kiss her.” Jason replied.
“And you can’t do that on your own. You will need your sister to be your wing-girl.” Mason said, patting my shoulder.
“What?” I frowned.
“You are too afraid to do that on your own. Aria can easily help.” Jason explained.
“I am not afraid!” I shot back.
“Then instead of asking us for any plans or tips, win her over on your own.” Jason challenged.
“Honestly, I don’t think you can do that.” Mason smirked.
“Challenge accepted.” I smirked back.
