Chapter 41: The Crush

“Thanks again for doing this, Penny!” Liam said as he stood at the doorstep. I raised an eyebrow at him. “You really are a lifesaver!” He told me.

Finally! I’m one of the good people! I am saving lives now!

“It’s okay, Liam.” I sighed. “You don’t have to thank me every five seconds!” I shook my head at him, trying to keep the smile off of my face.

This is annoying yet I am smiling… I have finally lost it now!

“But I have too! Thank you so much for doing this!” He sighed. I chuckled at him.

He’s acting like I am giving him my kidney!

“Like I said, it’s no big deal.” I replied. “Now get out of here! I have a young mind to shape!” I told him.

Shaping a young mind sounds like I’m going to make a sculpture or something… I don’t understand that phrase at all!

Why do I use phrases that make no sense at all?

Eww! I’m weird!

“Please don’t shape that mind into something… Like yours…” Liam grimaced. I rolled my eyes at him.

The amount of trust this guy has in me…

“I’m just tutoring him, Liam! I’m not giving him lessons on how to be awesome like me!” I huffed. “Now get out of here already!” I shooed him.

Why isn’t he leaving?

He was about to say something else which I knew was going to be along the lines of ‘Thank you so much again!’. I waved at him before closing the door on his face.

Hehe! I just slammed the door of his house on his face!

I swear to god, Penny! You are just something else!

“Is he gone?” A voice whispered behind me. I turned around with a smirk on my face.

“Yeah, he’s gone.” I chuckled when I saw Logan, Liam’s younger brother, peeking from the corner with a horrified expression on his face.

The boy sighed as he walked out to me.

“I thought he was never going to leave!” He reported.

Liam had to go to a classmate’s house to work on a project and he didn’t want to leave his little brother, who is not even that little, alone.

Liam has been tutoring his brother since his grades went down a little. He didn’t want poor Logan to take even a single day off.

That’s where I came in. Liam told us all about this little problem and since I had nothing better to do, I volunteered to tutor Logan.

After all, Logan did help me in pranking his own elder brother!

When I got here, I realised how much Liam actually dotted upon his younger brother. Logan almost looked like he was tortured on a daily basis!

Poor guy…

“He is not gone forever. You know that, right?” I smirked. Logan rolled his eyes at me.

“I am just waiting for him to leave for college! He’s just too much!” He groaned.

“He just cares about you, Logan.” I told him as I walked up to him. I ruffled his hair when he gave me an incredulous look.

“Do you even know why I am getting so many Lessons from him? Do you even know why he didn’t want me to have even this day to take a small break?” He questioned.

“Because you didn’t score so well in the last test?” I frowned.

“I got a B.” He deadpanned. “A single B. I have always gotten straight A’s. And that too because I wasn’t well and had to miss a few classes!” He cried.

Oh my goodness! Poor Logan!

“I am so sorry.” I sighed as I gave him a quick hug. He gave me a small smile. “If it helps, I’ll be a better tutor.” I smiled at him.

“No one can be worse than Liam!” Logan huffed as he turned and made his way to his room. I followed after him, trying not to laugh at his misery.

I knew that I shouldn’t be laughing at his misery but I couldn’t help it. I was also a younger sibling so I could relate to him but it was still hilarious.

“Have you done your homework?” I asked him when he sat down on his desk.

“I am starting with that.” He told me. I glanced at the books on his table and nodded my head.

“You do that. I’ll just sit here and stalk a few old friends or something.” I sighed as I sat down on his bed and took my phone out of my pocket.

It has been a while since I last stalked my sister, Livvy. I wonder what she has been up to…

Is she still hanging out with Ryder? If yes, then I am super jealous! I miss them!

“Who are you stalking?” Logan asked me after a few minutes as I was looking at Livvy’s most recent posts.

Turns out, Livvy is actually keeping a low profile these days… Weird!

“Why do you wanna know?” I raised an eyebrow at him as I looked up at him. He looked curious as he tried to sneak a peek at my phone screen.

“I was just wondering…” He murmured as he got up, his eyes still on my phone. I narrowed my eyes at him before locking my phone.

Teenagers nowadays! They just want to know everything!

“Shouldn’t you be doing your homework?” I asked him.

“All done.” He shrugged as he sat down next to me. “Now, who were you stalking?” He asked again.

“What about the assignments that Liam made for you?” I questioned, ignoring his question.

“I’ll start with those in a minute. I am just taking a break.” He shrugged. I pursed my lips as I thought about it.

A small break is doable, right? I mean, Liam won’t kill me because of it, right?

I sighed before nodding my head at Logan. And just as I expected, his face lit up like a Christmas tree on Christmas.

“Only a small break! After that, it’s back to the books!” I clarified. “I don’t want Liam to kill me when he gets back.” I mumbled.

“Don’t worry. He’ll never know.” Logan promised. “Now, who were you stalking?” He asked.

Oh god!

“You’re not gonna let it go, are you?” I mused.

“You understand me pretty well.” Logan answered with a huge grin on his face. “So, who was it?” He questioned.

“Why are you so curious?” I frowned.

“Was it Damien?” He asked, ignoring my question.

Why is he so curious?

“I’ll answer your question if you answer mine first.” I offered. “So, why are you so curious?” I asked in a calm voice.

He looked at me as he thought about it. I could see him fighting with a thought as he decided on what he wanted to say.

I wonder what it could be that he is so hesitant in sharing it…

“Are you still dating Ethan?” He asked in a small voice. I frowned as I shook my head at him.

“No. Why?” I inquired.

“Because you’re really pretty.” He mumbled. I chuckled at his words, nudging his shoulder with mine.

“That’s what Aria always tells me.” I rolled my eyes in a playful manner. “It’s like everyone hates that guy! Why do you not like Ethan? What did he do to you?” I huffed.

“It’s not him.” Logan sighed. “It’s you. I think… I think I have a crush on you.” He explained.

Oh boy!

I couldn’t help it as my eyebrows went up in shock.

How do you speak English again?

“W-what?” I stuttered.

Why did my brain suddenly stop working?

“You are so funny! And you pull pranks, get your friends out of trouble. You’re just so awesome!” He smiled as he looked at me.

Caramel custard!

“Logan, you do realise that I am older than you, right?” I chuckled nervously.

I don’t have any problems with girls dating younger guys but it is weird to see Liam’s little brother as anything other than… Well, Liam’s little brother.

I mean, I was tutoring him! He is like my own little brother in a way!

He’s even like a foot shorter than me!

And I am into taller guys… Like Damien…

“And that matters why?” He raised an eyebrow at me.

What do I do now?

Roll, duck and cover!

You don’t do that in a situation like this, Penny!

Lie back on the floor and act dead!

You have seriously lost it now, Penny!

“Cotton candy was invented by a dentist!” I blurted out.

Crap!

It is NOT the time for random facts, Penny!

“What?” Logan asked in confusion.

Don’t blurt out the first thing that comes to your mind, you stupid creature!

“Koalas have fingerprints!” I blurted out again. I covered my face with my hands in embarrassment as Logan’s frown deepened.

Candy corn!

“What are you talking about, Penny?” He questioned.

I took a deep breath as I got up and picked my phone and bag up.

He’s old enough to be alone at home, right?

I still decided to text Liam about my sudden need to get away from his little brother as soon as possible.

WickedPenny: Liam, I am really sorry but I think that I have to leave Logan alone.

I gulped as I kept my phone in my pocket and gave an awkward smile to Logan.

“I-I just r-realised that I have s-something to take care of at home!” I stuttered.

I could almost hear my old nanny’s harsh scolding telling me to speak clearly.

That lady would never leave my nightmares…

“What? Why?” Logan asked. “Is it because of my confession?” He scratched the back of his neck nervously.

“No!” I spoke a little too loudly. “I mean, you know, sea lions can dance to a beat.” I mentally slapped myself as the words tumbled out of my mouth.

You just had to tell someone about the sea lions, didn’t you!

Stupid stupid Penny!

“What?” He frowned. “Penny, you are not making sense right now…” He told me.

“I hardly ever make sense.” I thought out loud. Logan chuckled at my words.

“Are you nervous?” He smirked.

“No, I am leaving.” I replied as I rushed to the door.

“Penny!” Logan called after me. I turned to him when I reached the door. “Hey! Look, I wasn’t trying to make you run away. I was just being honest about my feelings so that things aren’t awkward between us.” He reported.

Is he an idiot? How can that confession not make things awkward?

“I think that Damien is gonna punch you if you told him anything about this.” I snorted.

“Y-you’re with D-Damien?” It was Logan’s turn to stutter.

“I mean, He and I are going out.” I shrugged. Logan visibly gulped at my words.

“Didn’t you have something to do at your house?” He squeaked. I opened my mouth to say something but he cut me off. “Bye!” He exclaimed before shutting the door on my face.

That was… Interesting…

Me: Hey guys! So, we have a few things that we have to discuss...

Penny: Oh no!

Xander: Don’t tell me that you’re taking another break!

Me: What? No!

Ellie: Then?

Me: I have to talk about three things. And I’m not going on a break.

Damien: Please do continue.

Me: First, I went to pick my brother up from the airport today and what I saw made me really uncomfortable. I know that the world is trying to go back to normal with people going out but many of them are forgetting that the virus isn’t gone.

Penny: Putting on a mask won’t make you any less cool.

Me: It’ll just reduce your chances of getting sick. And even if you are vaccinated, you are not totally immune so please do take all the necessary precautions when you step out of your house!

Mason: She’s right. You guys don’t live in Crazy-topia like us. We don’t have the virus here.

Jason: *rolling his eyes* And the second thing?

Me: Second, I want you guys to be able to comment freely. I mean, there is nothing to be scared about!

Penny: Your comments excite her and she’s able to write faster and hence update faster!

Mason: Show us some love, people!

Me: Third, I have a challenge for you all with a little reward.

Mason: Now you’re talking!

Damien: We will give you a small dialogue from Chapter 42. If you can correctly guess the speaker of that dialogue and who the speaker is speaking or replying to, you will get to read half of Chapter 43 right when Chapter 42 is put up on Inkitt!

Liam: *whispering* You know, that’s the most Damien’s ever spoken...

Me: *whispering* Yeah, I noticed...

Jason: So, here’s the dialogue:

Unknown speaker: I’m not a dwarf from Snow White!

Me: You guys have until the next update.

Damien: And the next update will be up on 24th August 2021.

Xander: Which is this Tuesday!

Mason: So, you have until then to figure out the answer!

Jason: Until then, stay safe!

Penny: And keep guessing! *winks*

Me: And keep that mask on!

Me and Mason: And eat cake!

Me: Gosh! They have so much to do!

Curtains close as the author and the characters turn into unicorns and fly away...
