Chapter 45: Cat's Out of the Bag [Part 2]

“Yeah, sure.” I rolled my eyes at his words. “Would you still have wanted to be my boyfriend?” I asked him.

“That wasn’t real. You would never really want anything to do with me.” Damien grunted.

“How can you even say that?” I gaped at him.

“He does have a point, Penny.” Jason shrugged. “I mean, your uncle hates him.” He added.

“And my uncle is not me!” I informed them. “I’m Penelope Brielle Hughes.” I pointed to myself.

“Then look me in the eye and tell me that you didn’t just hang out with me to piss off you uncle.” Damien told me.

I bit my lip as I looked at him unsurely.

I was tempted to tell him the truth. I mean, I did think about it. I did want to piss my uncle in the beginning. I wanted him to send me away because going away was everything I have ever known.

But things changed when I got to know all of them. Things changed when I found a home here. I didn’t want to leave.

And the reason as to why I was still around these people was because they were the only true friends I have known. I didn’t want to lose them…

But would he believe that?

Would he want to believe me?

“I genuinely like being with you.” I told him honestly. “I might have thought about trying to irritate my uncle by being around you but only for a millisecond if not less than that.” I shrugged.

I was putting all my cards on the table.

“So, you did think about that?” Mason asked.

I took a seat on the front seat of the room near them. I was tired. Mentally and physically exhausted.

“But it wasn’t the reason I chose to be a friend to you all.” I said as I rested my head on the table.

“She did help me when she didn’t even know me.” Jason smiled at me when I looked at him. “She helped me with my ankle. And then she agreed to sit at the table to scare Mason.” He chuckled while his twin rolled his eyes.

I smiled at the memory which now seemed so old yet still so sacred. It was the start of something good in my life.

“And she did help Xander with the Sarah situation even when she didn’t know him either.” Mason added.

“And I opened up to her. I told her about my family. I let her be around my little sister. Yet she didn’t open up to us.” Damien pointed out.

“I did tell you about my parents!” I argued.

“But you never shared any names.” Mason remarked. “And you never mentioned being the Principal’s niece.” he gulped when I glared at him.

“That was because I was avoiding the drama that is taking place right here.” I sighed. “I just wanted to be normal for once. Just have a bunch of nice friends.” I mumbled.

“How can any of us ever believe anything you say? How can we ever trust you?” Damien inquired.

Before I could even open my mouth to say something, the doors of the room slammed open.

“Are you seriously kidding me?” Sarah shouted with an incredulous expression on her face.

“What the heck are you doing here?” Jason asked.

“And how much of the conversation did you really hear?” Mason narrowed his eyes at her.

“I’ve heard enough.” Sarah shrugged nonchalantly. “But are you guys serious?” She asked them, going back to her incredulous expression.

Judging by how casual she was, I could’ve guessed that she didn’t really know who my uncle was and that made me relax a bit.

“Do you even know what we are talking about?” Jason snorted.

“Penny’s the Principal’s niece.” Sarah replied in a bored tone. I took a deep breath, holding it in as I waited for her to say something else.

There was silence as we all waited to see who will speak up now and what they’ll say.

“What are you doing here again?” Jason frowned.

“I am pointing out that if you guys really think that Penny did something wrong by hiding the news, then you guys aren’t doing anything better.” She replied. “She was afraid that you would hate her for it and you guys are doing exactly that. Then how can she be wrong?” She added.

We were all silent as we processed her words.

Is she really standing up for me?

“Are you not shocked in the slightest?” It was Mason who broke the silence with that question.

“I am shocked.” Sarah informed us. “But I know that it doesn’t really change the person she is. She’s still the Penny we all have known since the first day she walked through the school doors.” She smiled at me.

“But she’s not.” Damien said. “She’s the person who lied to us. She’s not who we all thought she was.” He glared at me.

My heart was breaking on the inside and I was getting angrier on the outside.

If he could think that, then maybe he was not the person I thought he was…

“Damien is right. She did hide such a big thing from us all.” Jason admitted in a defeated voice.

“She’s still the girl who would help Xander get rid of a drunk girl throwing herself at him. She’s still the same girl who’ll babysit your little sister on a moment’s notice.” Sarah told Damien. “She’s still the same girl who would do anything for her friends.” She added in a whisper.

“But we don’t even know if she really is our friend.” Jason choked out.

Yup. My heart just cracked.

“Well then, I believe her to be my friend. So, I’ll take her away.” Sarah said as she motioned for me to stand up.

I looked at the blank faces of the guys I’ve come to know as my friends before standing up.

They couldn’t even look me in the eyes now.

“If this is what you guys want then okay.” I choked out. “Believe it or not, I just wanted to be your friend. What else could I have ever wanted from you?” I said before looking away from them.

Sarah looped her arms through mine. She smiled at me as she started pulling me out of the door.

“You guys are literally letting one of the most sincere friends go. I hope you regret it later.” Sarah said with a sweet smile as she looked at the guys before leaving the room.

“Sarah-” I started speaking when we were far enough from the boys but she cut me off.

“I know that I was getting the hang of solving those equations you gave me but after you left that day, I seriously couldn’t solve even one of them! They became gibberish to me! And I need your help with them ASAP!” She ranted with urgency lacing her voice.

I knew what she was doing here. She was trying to take my mind off of what happened. And I was thankful for that.

“Sure.” I giggled at her.
