Chapter 50: How You Get the Girl

Damien’s POV

I am an idiot.

That’s a fact and hence it can never be changed.

Penny should have known that.

Penny…

The girlfriend I might never get back…

I wonder what Aria will do when she finds out about this…

But even my overactive sister could do anything to make me hate myself more than I do right now.

Nothing can make me feel worse…

Penny told us all about her parents and how she was now living with her aunt and uncle. I should have thought about it. I should have taken some time to think.

I swear, my brain cells never work when they are needed to!

She never lied to me. And yet I accused her of doing so…

She never took her friends for granted. And yet I accused her of using everyone…

She just kept one small secret so that we won’t treat her any different. And I overreacted without a second thought…

I really hate myself!

Even the boys think that. Xander almost punched my teeth out when the twins explained everything that happened to the others.

I would have thought that Liam would have been the happiest since Penny and he were almost always arguing since the day he told us about her date with Ethan.

But nope!

Kara had to hold Liam back from kicking me off to mars. Just like Xander was holding Ellie back from killing me and the twins.

I felt like crap!

And yet I could gather enough courage to go to her and ask for forgiveness.

Because I was ashamed of myself… And I didn’t know if I could ever face her…

I was afraid that she would never want to see me again. I was cruel to her and maybe she realised how she didn’t really need me.

But I needed her…

I spoiled everything just because I couldn’t help being a brat. It was one of those moments when I knew that whatever I was saying was wrong but I couldn’t stop.

When I was saying all those things, I knew that I was going to regret it all later but I couldn’t hold my tongue. It was like one of those moments when you know that you are wrong yet you continue to argue because you’re in too deep and quitting the argument looks impossible.

The sound of my phone ringing broke my train of thoughts. I looked at it with a frown.

After I told everyone about what had happened, they were all so angry that they refused to talk to me. They were ignoring me as if I didn’t exist.

Even the twins were so guilty about it all that they were in no condition to talk to anyone.

I sighed as I picked my phone up to see who was calling me. I was confused to see Leah’s name on the screen.

Why was she calling me?

Penny told me about the conversation she had with Leah and I was almost sure that we won’t be hearing from her ever again after that.

My curiosity made me accept the call.

“Damien?” Her voice floated through the phone.

“Why are you calling me?” I asked her, getting straight to the point. I knew that I was being rude but I was not feeling like doing anything but punching concrete.

I would have done exactly that if the thought of going to the gym hadn’t striked me first. That was why I was punching a punching bag and not the brick wall.

“Wow! Such a gentleman.” Leah scoffed.

“I’m not in the mood, Leah.” I told her in a flat tone.

If she just called me to irritate me, I’d rather go back to the punching bag, pretending that it was my face.

“I am calling to ask for a favour.” She sighed. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.

“And why would I help you?” I asked her. “I have a girlfriend and it is not you. You and I have no connection, Leah.” I reported, feeling tired.

Punching the hard bag for hours was now showing it’s side effects. I could feel my muscles begging me to take a break but I was still very angry.

Angry at myself…

“Don’t you mean ex-girlfriend?” Leah’s smug voice asked. I froze as I tried to think of how she could have known about the whole thing.

“Who told you?” I demanded, clenching my jaw in anger.

Who could have told her?

Did the whole school know about my break up with Penny?

“You just did.” Leah answered. “I just saw that Penny’s ‘in a relationship’ status changed to ‘single’ a while ago. It was just a hunch but you confirmed it.” She explained.

“What the hell do you want, Leah?” I snapped at her.

She was blackmailing me…

“I want to help you.” She responded. I frowned at her words.

“What do you mean by-” I started but she cut me off with a heavy sigh.

“Would you let me finish?” She snapped. “I don’t even know what happened between the two of you! For all I know, she did the right thing by breaking up with you!” She grumbled.

“Would you get to the point?” I demanded, getting impatient.

“Judging by how you called her your girlfriend and not your ex, I think you want her back.” She stated.

“And?” I huffed, getting irritated by her cryptic behaviour.

“We both know that if Penny is single, Ethan is going to go after her again. And I don’t want that. And I’m sure that you don’t want that either.” She started.

“You are right.” I muttered as the thought suddenly hit me.

Penny hated me now. And she was single now.

It was no secret that a lot of boys in the school liked her. They stared at her whenever she walked down the hallway. She was beautiful.

And now…

She could easily get another boyfriend.

And who would she think of first if not the guy with whom she had an amazing date before she started dating me.

I was always worried about Ethan taking her away from me and now he had a chance to do so.

“I might not know Penny well enough but she genuinely liked you for some reason.” Leah told me. “She couldn’t have moved on from you so fast. So, you have a chance to get her back.” She added.

“But how? She hates me!” I huffed as I sat down on the floor, leaning against the wall.

I was beyond exhausted!

“Jealousy can be a miracle worker, my friend.” I could hear the smirk in her voice.

“What?” I frowned.

“Oh my god! You’re so dumb! Why did Penny ever even date you?” She huffed. I rolled my eyes at that.

“That’s none of your business.” I grumbled.

“Anyways, if you and I pretend to date, we can make Penny jealous. And you can then swoop in and get your girl back.” She told me.

“But why would you help me?” I asked suspiciously.

“Not that it’s any of your business, but I like Ethan. I don’t want to lose him now that I have finally found the courage to go after him. Plus, being around will make him look at me.” She replied.

“You like Ethan?” I raised an eyebrow in amusement.

“Hey! I’m helping you here!” She pointed out. “You have to act nice.” She added.

Well, there was no way I could just go and get Penny on my own. Maybe I can get her back with Leah’s help.

I mean, I have already messed things up. How can it get any worse?

“Deal.” I smirked.

“Okay, cool. Text me whenever you’re having the next group hang out where Ethan is present.” She ordered. I was about to say something when she disconnected the call.

I rolled my eyes before keeping my phone down next to me.

Maybe I still had a chance to win Penny back…

My phone rang again and this time it was Mason.

I quickly accepted the call, hoping that he had news about how Penny was doing right now.

“How is she?” I asked him before he could have said anything.

“Hey! I just called to tell you that Penny is not leaving town!” He said. I could almost picture him grinning.

“What do you mean by not leaving town? Was she thinking about it?” I panicked.

“Nope. We just thought that she was going to. Her sister’s in town and we thought that she came here to take Penny away.” Mason explained.

I sighed in relief.

If she left, I would have no chance at ever seeing her again.

“How is she?” I asked again.

“Oh! She’s doing wonderfully! There was this guy with her who was taking really good care of her. They both looked really close and Penny looked happy to have him around.” Mason told me.

I couldn’t help as jealousy burned in my heart.

Did she already move on?

“Who was he? Ethan?” I asked through gritted teeth.

I swear to god! If it was him…

“No. I’ve never seen the guy before. He was a little older than us.” Mason answered. “But judging by how close he looked to Penny, I can tell that they’ve known each other for a long while.” He added.

The hell!

“Wasn’t she having a girl’s night?” I asked. When I left Ellie’s house after receiving a punch from her, I overheard Ellie talking to Kara about having a girl’s night at Penny’s house.

“That guy is some friend of hers and I guess since he’s visiting the town, he’s staying in her house.” Mason informed me. “I think he’s crashing their girl’s night.” He added in a whisper.

What the hell!?

Was Mason just lying to get a reaction out of me or was he telling the truth?

He wouldn’t try to play with my feelings like that, would he?

But if he was telling the truth, then it was a problem.

I had to work fast if I ever had a shot at having the best girlfriend back.

“Why are you telling me this, Mason?” I questioned. He was silent for a while before he sighed loudly.

“Look, I know that you love Penny. I know that you regret everything that you said.” He stated. “As your friend, I want what’s best for you. Penny is upset and I want her to be happy again. The only way to make you both happy is to get you two together again.” He ranted.

“Thanks, Mason.” I smiled.

He was a troublemaker and I have received numerous detention slips because of him. But I know that I can count on him when it matters the most.

“Just hurry up, Damien. Get her back before she’s someone else’s girlfriend.” He sighed before cutting the call.

I am going to get her back…

Me: So... What do you guys think about Damien?

Penny: That he’s an idiot.

Ellie: Couldn’t agree more!

Me: *sighing* He really is a dumbo...

Damien: You made me like that!

Me: You can never blame the author for the mistakes made by their characters!

Damien: Then who can we blame?

Me: The character!

Mason: I couldn’t agree more!

Me: I’m not writing your story.

Mason: I totally support my brother, Damien!

Jason: I thought that I was your brother!

Mason: *mumbling* And people think that I am stupid...

Jason: Hey!

Me: Moving on! This chapter is dedicated to @the_blackest_white a.k.a. that_smiling_earthling for always being the first to comment and all the support she has shown. Thank you.

Jason: You are amazing!

Penny: Thank you!

Me: Well, see you all tomorrow!

Jason: Until then, stay safe, people!

Me and Mason: And eat Pasta!

Curtains close as the author and the characters go off to try to hibernate... Even if it’s not winter...
