Chapter 5: Rules of Friendship

“I realized something.” I heard someone saying. I turned my head to the right to find one of the twins sitting there. Judging by the slight craziness in the eyes, I would say that this was definitely Mason. But then again, I didn’t really know either of the twins so I wasn’t completely sure.

“And what did you realise?” I asked him with a raised eyebrow. It was apparently too early to be in the class since the warning bell hadn’t even rang but I had nothing else to do. I did see Ellie and her friends but I didn’t want to get too close to them all. I knew that my parents can change their minds at any given second and call for my return. That is of course, if they even remember me.

“I just realised that you are a nerd.” He said, making me frown in confusion. He smirked at me as if he figured out my deepest and darkest secret. “Don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone.” He added.

“How is being a nerd something that I should be embarrassed about? And how the hell did you come to that conclusion?” I asked him with a deep frown on my face.

According to me, being a nerd was something not everyone could do. At least I couldn’t. Being a nerd meant leaving the alluring things that we all know that we shouldn’t do. Being a nerd was knowing how studying is more important than partying even when everyone else was enjoying themselves at parties.

I certainly didn’t have that much of self control. If I had an exam a week later, I’ll procrastinate till the last moment. If I knew that I should be studying and my friends invited me for a movie or something, I couldn’t resist the fun I might have with my friends.

Being a nerd isn’t easy!

“It’s not something to be embarrassed about but I still won’t tell anyone if you don’t want me to.” He shrugged. “And to answer your second question, I saw how you left the chit-chat with the whole group on the hallway just so you could arrive here before the bell.” He said with a smirk. I could tell that he was proud of how he noticed this.

“You know what? I think that you are either secretly a nerd too. I mean, you are here early too, aren’t you?” I said with my eyes narrowed at the dumb boy. “Or maybe you are just obsessed with me.” I added. He chuckled and shook his head before smirking at me.

“Option two is correct!” He exclaimed. I rolled my eyes at him. “You know, the way you came to the cafeteria with my clone, it really impressed me. I accept that I was scared but I’m not scared anymore.” He explained.

“I thought the arm twisting might have taught you to stay away from me.” I groaned as I turned to face the teacher’s table even though the teacher wasn’t in the class yet.

“I decided to forgive you for that. Since we are going to be friends, I realised that we need to forget about it and move on. I have a big heart and so you don’t have to worry about the past feuds.” He told me with a smile on his face.

I couldn’t help as a small smile formed on my face as I saw his overly happy face. He looked almost like a kid on Christmas who was getting loads and loads of presents.

“If you have such a nice and big heart and you forgive people so easily, then why did you take your brother’s note from the nurse’s office when he twisted his ankle?” I asked him with a raised eyebrow.

“Don’t you know? Siblings or clones should never be forgiven!” Mason told me in a serious tone. I chuckled as I shook my head at him.

“You are something else, Mason.” I told him with a smile on my face. Mason grinned at that and pretended to tip over his hat.

“Thank you!” He said in an overly enthusiastic voice. “Anyways, now I would like to tell you rule number one of being a part of our group. Even if you are a temporary addition.” He said becoming serious.

“Rule? And why am I a temporary addition?” I asked him in confusion.

“Well, there are some unspoken rules of friendship in our group. And you are still a temporary addition since we know next to nothing about you.” He answered. I nodded in understanding.

“So, what are the rules?” I asked him.

“They are simple. Rule number one is friends over everything else. And everything includes your nerdiness, your sleep and anything else you might love. Even your image in front of the teachers.” Mason told me.

“You guys sacrifice your sleep for each other?” I gasped in shock.

I can never even sacrifice my sleep for myself!

“We are best friends. We love each other so stuff like this is nothing to us.” Mason shrugged. “You know, one time when Ellie was upset about something and wasn’t talking to Xander and me, Xander went as far as staying by her door all night long!” He told me.

“That’s because they both are dating, right?” I said, not really sure.

“They weren’t dating back then. They were just best friends.” Mason told me. “And you know, when me, my clonie, Xander or Damien get into any trouble with the principal, Ellie and Liam go as far as leaving their classes to plead our cases in front of the principal.” Mason added.

“Wow!” I said as I thought about it. Anyone I’ve ever called friends before have all been so superficial in front of these people. “You guys must be really close.” I said.

The bell rang but I ignored it since I was too interested in what me and Mason were talking about. The friendship that they all had was something I’ve never seen or heard off. That might be because my parents made me constantly change my schools but I had a real chance at having some fantasy friends here if they all let me into their group.

“We are. We literally can’t go long without each other.” Mason told me. “Moving on, rule number two is that we have absolutely no secrets. We once broke that rule and it ended up hurting us all.” Mason told me.

“No secrets means...” I trailed off as I looked at Mason.

“Not even your deepest darkest secret. You can ignore that for now but if you do become one of our best friends, you will have to tell us everything about yourself.” Mason said.

“Can I make a confession then?” I asked him. He frowned at me.

“If you want to...” He trailed off, unsure of what I had to say.

“I really think that you and your twin are really cute.” I said.

“Aww!” Someone cooed behind me. I turned around to find Jason and Damien standing there. “I think that you are really beautiful!” Jason smiled at me as Damien just tried to suppress his smile.

“I’m not cute though. I’d rather be a handsome jerk.” He told me in a matter-of-fact tone. I rolled my eyes as a small smile formed on my face. I then turned to Damien.

“And since I am confessing, I really think that you are super hot, Damien.” I told him with a smirk. He rolled his eyes but a smile formed on his face.

“He doesn’t date, girl. If I were you, I’d have given up before even starting anything.” A girl told me. I knew her since she introduced herself to me on my first day. Her name was Leah or Lena or something. I don’t really remember her name since I didn’t talk much with her.

“That’s because you are someone Damien would never date. You cheated on Xander with me that too on the same day he asked you out.” Mason sneered at the girl making her glare at him before she rushed to the back row and sat down, hiding from us.

“Xander dated her?” I asked Mason with a frown on my face. I thought that Xander had been crazy over Ellie ever since he was born. It sounded just like that from what Ellie told me earlier.

“It’s a long story.” Mason told me.

“Xander actually dated almost each and every girl in this school before he realised that he loved Ellie.” Jason snickered making me shake my head in disbelief.

“Wow! I certainly didn’t expect that.” I thought out loud.

“You know next to nothing about us. You can not really expect anything from us yet.” Damien told me. His words were harsh, reminding me that they weren’t my friends yet. But his deep voice sounded amazing.

“I might not be qualified enough to expect anything from you all. But you should expect me not to give up flirting with you, Damien.” I told him with a wink. Damien chuckled before taking a seat next to Jason who sat next to me.

If he thinks that I am joking, he’ll be making a huge mistake...
