Chapter 5

“Peter,” I kept my tone low.

“You are awake? Do you know the time?” Peter quietly opened the door quarter of the way and spoke in a hushed voice.

“I just woke up. I am feeling too hot.”

He walked in and opened the window. The soft golden glow fell straight onto his face giving it a freshly polished bronze look. “Nice cool fresh air will make you feel better. Soon you will be back to dreaming. Are you still feeling tired from the morning activities? Don’t forget the early start tomorrow. I am almost not going back to sleep. Have to rush off to the grocers soon.”

“I am not feeling tired. The shower was quite refreshing.” I said in an innocent tone.

Another serious look on Peter’s face.

“I will leave you to catch up with your sleep.” Peter covered the window with the curtain and turned towards the door.

“Peter, are you mad at me?” I still wasn’t sure how Peter had taken my new turn of behaviour. I had been best of friends with him for exactly a year now. I didn’t want to lose that friendship between us. Most of all, I didn’t want to lose him. I didn’t want him to go away somewhere far because of me. To the best of my knowledge, we were a very happy family and I wanted it to stay that way.

“No Jack. I am not mad at you. why?”

“I want to remain your best friend for life. I thought I was in trouble.”

Peter came over and brushed my hair with his fingers which he always does when he allows me a fair amount of investigative research liberty that boys of my age rarely attain, according to him. Then he took a deep breath, sighed and sat on the edge of my bed.

“No, you are not in any trouble. And we are still best friends.” He squeezed his lips. He leaned over me and kissed me on the forehead. His elbows resting on either side of me. The weight of his chest pressed against mine. He held me from the shoulders and moved his lips around my eyes. At one point pressing his nose into my eye and touching my lips with his chin.

“You have given me great pleasure by coming in to my life. The pleasure I never knew existed. I was so unfortunate for all those years. And you have turned things around so amazingly. I am a lucky parent, if you like – he said blinking gently into my eyes. If anyone is in trouble it is probably me, if I forget any item today from the grocery list.” He smiled very close to my face and his eyes turned brighter with the source of glint through the window from the gleaming street lamps. His beautiful eyes are one of his best features. It is as if it is possible to see behind them perhaps for their transparency or the clarity in them. I find myself almost lost in those eyes.

“Something I know will help me go back to sleep.” I smiled back and put my arms around him once again.

“Just relax and take your mind of things, and it should help you sleep, all peace and quiet.” Peter said in hurry and tried to get off the bed.

“Just a kiss really I was thinking of.” I kept my hands in his underarm.

“Where have you got these brand new ideas from?”

“I read it somewhere and of course my imagination.” I said in a controlled confident voice.

“You seem to have suddenly acquired a great deal of imagination. Have you done it with anyone else?”

“Have any of your friends said anything about it?”

“No, I haven’t discussed it with anyone. It has been on my mind for almost a month now. I think you are very attractive. Most of my friends are not even close to as interesting as you. They are not as best looking either. Besides, they are not my appointed angel guardians.” Peter burst into laughter and laughed uncontrollably with mouth shut for fear of making noise. He turned his face this way and that way to control the burst of air in his mouth, rubbing his nose on my chest.

“Has anyone outside the circle of your friends influenced you to imagine these things?” He barely managed to control his laughter.

“No Peter, just looking at you helps me to think a lot.”

Another muffled laughter.

“Ok a kiss.” A quick kiss given.

“No, a proper one inside the lips. It will help me sleep.”

“When do you think I should go to sleep?”

A muffled laughter rose once again shuddering his chest. I was quite serious but I wasn’t sure why Peter was laughing when I couldn’t even smile as I felt my request to be coldly turned down.

“If that is what you want.” I figured Peter was laughing because what I was asking for was interesting to him. So I fired another request.

“Why don’t you stay with me until the morning. I would really like to go to sleep in your company.”

“I will be over here with Jack. He is feeling restless.” Peter put his face out of the door and shouted.

No reply from Della’s bedroom.
