I need to be your boyfriend

The rhythmic sounds of key taps resonated across the room as Lizzie sat at her desk and finished the weekly report.

Typing in the last key, she leaned back and let out a sigh. A glance at the clock told her she had been sitting at this desk for 4 hours straight and her head-splitting migraine begged her to get as far away from the screen as was possible.

“Already done?” A man in pale blue shirt walked towards her.

Squinting, she tried to look up from her seat but her throbbing head wouldn’t comply.

The man leaned in to whisper in her ear, “Cafeteria. An espresso shot and dark latte is waiting for you.”

With that, he pat her shoulder and walked away, leaving Lizzie puzzled. She dismissed the whole thing, not thinking much of it.

When she went to the cafeteria, however, the café worker gave her the exact things the man had promised. She sat down at her regular seat and took the shot of expresso first.

After two sips of her latte, Lizzie was feeling much better, although her head still felt like it could burst any minute. She knew she shouldn’t ebb away her migraines with caffeine and rather get some sleep but being the head of Editorial and Production sector of ExpressPublish publishing house, sleep was a luxury she couldn’t afford to have. To top that, Lizzie was a workaholic.

Seeing a hint of the pale blue shirt from the corner of her eye, Lizzie turned and beckoned him with a finger and narrowed eyes.

“What’s the occasion?” Lizzie inquired.

“I don’t understand what you mean.”

“Stop fooling around. What does this coffee imply? Compensation or bribe?” Lizzie narrowed her eyes.

“What should I be compensating for?” Aaron played dumb, acting innocent. As if he hadn’t deleted the entire account’s file on accident last Friday.

“Is that so?” Lizzie arched an eyebrow.

Aaron rolled his eyes and sat down across the table, facing her directly.

“Alright, calm down fuss-budget, that was an accident and I took responsibility for that. Not to mention the all-nighter I pulled to remake the entire report.”

“Fuss-budget? Seriously? That’s the best you got? What do you want, Aaron?”

Aaron puffed out a sigh and finally gave in.

“Okay, fine. You got me-”

“It wasn’t that hard, captain obvious.” Lizzie cut in.

Aaron ignored and continued, “I need your help.”

“No shit sherlock. You need more than my help to fix your annoying ass.” Lizzie buzzed in.

Aaron gripped onto the table for patience and further said through gritted teeth, “Just listen to me and for once please keep your mouth shut. It’s ridi-”

“You’re annoying me. I have a pounding headache and you’re only making it worse. I haven’t slept in days and so I do not wish to-”

“I need to be your boyfriend.”
Lizzie mouth shut and stared.

“What the fuck?”

“Yes. Okay, before you proceed to reject me-”

“Bitch...no.” Lizzie stated matter-of-factly.

“Hear me out. I need you to... to uh teach me how to be a boyfriend. If that makes any sense...”

Lizzie folded her arms and leaned back, “It really doesn’t but please, do go on.”

“There is this girl that I like and...well, I don’t know how to pick her up.”

“Okay, first of all, change your stupid vocabulary. She isn’t an item in the Wholesale isle that you can just ′pick up’. Secondly, you can’t pick her up; she isn’t your type.”

“Liz, you don’t even know who I’m talking about.” Aaron drawled, his patience thinning out with every second.

“Doesn’t matter, does it? The way you are...no one will date you, bro.” She winked.

“Fuck you. But you’re right.”

Lizzie smirked.

“Let.me.finish. I need you to teach me...God, this isn’t going to be easy for me to say. Elizabeth Hutcherson, I need you to teach me how to flirt and make me... boyfriend material.” As if he was holding his breath all this time, Aaron let out a huge lungful of air and apprehensively looked at the cold hearted lady in front of him.

Lizzie did nothing but glare at him for a whole minute before getting up to leave.

She leaned in and put a hand on Aaron’s shoulder.

“This Saturday at 7 a.m. sharp, I want you at the café le Mer. And it’s Lizzie NOT Elizabeth.” With that she sashayed away.
