Chapter 16

Tuesday

The lunch bell rings and I make my way over to the cafeteria alone. Sage still hasn’t spoken to me even though Adrian asked her out, which annoys me. The only reason she could stay remotely mad at me is because she thought I was stealing him away from her. I walk into the noisy cafeteria to see everyone at my table. Adrian and Lukas sit in their normal spots, Madeline, Mason, Stephanie, and Aaron sit at the other side of the table. Lukas beckons me over and I sit down at the table in between the two.

“How’s your day been?” Lukas asks me, nudging my shoulder slightly.

“Fine, I’m pretty tired right now,” I lay my head on my hand and close my eyes. When they say I’m closing, they mean I have to clean, put the chairs up, make sure everything is where it’s supposed to be, and then lock up. So I didn’t get home until almost 1 AM.

“Why? I thought you were always in bed before nine, like a grandma,” Adrian smiles, I look his way and flip him off.

“How did it go with Sage yesterday?” I ask, taking a chicken nugget from Lukas’s plate.

“It went, she said yes to the date, we went to dinner and a movie, and I ended up banging her in the backseat of my car.” I nearly spit out my food in surprise.

“You what?!” The cafeteria got quiet and I take a quick glance at Lukas who’s trying to contain a laugh.

“There’s nothing to see here people, return to your abnormally boring lives!” Madeline shouts, which causes everyone to turn back around in their seats and begin whispering.

“I was joking, about the dinner and the movie part, we did fuck, though,” I reach across the table and smack him upside the head, “Ow! What was that for?”

“Now she’s gonna think she has a chance with you asshole! It was supposed to be one date so she wouldn’t be mad at me anymore not a fuck and dump!”

“Who said it was a fuck and dump? I think she’s tight enough for a few more rounds,” I lean across the table and smack him again, “Dude enough with the hitting! I think I lost a few brain cells!”

“I don’t think you had any, to begin with,” Lukas laughs, I laugh along with him and again the cafeteria goes quiet. I furrow my eyebrows and look to where everyone else is.

Sage walks in, her brown hair is in a high ponytail and she’s baring a short cheerleader outfit. When the hell did she try out for the cheer team?

“Hey guys,” Sage practically bounces over to our table and takes a seat on Adrian’s lap. I furrow my eyebrows even more -which I’m not even sure is possible- and look over at Lukas who is equally as surprised as I am.

“Uh, hey Sage,” Adrian says before she fiercely pushes her lips onto his. They make out for a good minute, then she wipes her lips, gets off his lap, and sits down next to Madeline.

“What the hell was that?” I whisper to Lukas who’s just staring at the extremely flustered Adrian.

“I’m not sure what just happened but I think I can get used to it,” Adrian says getting up from his seat and taking the empty one next to Sage.

“His dick is talking,” Lukas says, his brown eyes finally looking my way. He smiles sweetly and I scoot closer to lay my head on his shoulder.

“You’re my new pillow,” I say, snuggling into the spot where my head will be most comfortable.

He wraps his arm around me and pulls me closer so I can fit better. I take in his scent and it’s a mixture of marshmallows and something else. I’m not sure what, though.

“You smell good,” My eyes are closed and I’m now fully cuddling this boy. I can feel my heart begin to beat irregularly like a love struck school girl. I pull my hoodie up so nobody looks at me.

“I smell good?” He chuckles quietly. I feel his head rest on mine and sleep is begging to take over me. After what feels like forever, the lunch bell rings.

“I think I’m gonna go home, do me a favor and get me all my homework from my classes.” I wrap my arms around him to insinuate a hug and then get up from the seat.

“Can I come with you? I’m feeling kind of sleepy too, I’ll sleep on your couch if that’s cool.” Lukas rushes and stands up too, grabbing my bag and his.

“Come home with me? I don’t think that’s a good idea,” I say, taking my bag from his hands.

“Please, Bo, I really wanna leave.” I look at everyone, everyone here knows nothing about me. So what’s the difference with Lukas? Why should he get to be different? “I’ll text Adrian to get our stuff,” He says, taking my hand.

I sigh, “Yeah sure, but you have to promise you won’t tell anyone anything.” He raises his eyebrows but I don’t say anything else. I begin to walk out of the cafeteria and the both of us make our way to the parking lot.

“How’d you get to school?” I ask as we approach my car.

“Adrian,” He says simply, getting into the passenger side. I get in, start the car, and I begin driving toward my apartment, “So what did you mean when you said to promise I won’t tell anyone?”

“I live alone,” I say, as we stop at a red light.

“Alone? Like no parents alone?” I nod and look at him. He doesn’t seem surprised, he’s just taking it in stride. But I guess to him he may think I’m 18 and I’ve just moved out and I barely got a job at like Taco Bell or something. In reality, none of that is true.

My life is as fucked up as the next. I pull into the complex.

“That’s cool, how come nobody knows?” He asks, unbuckling his seat belt.

“It’s nobody’s business other than mine,” I yawn, pulling the keys from the ignition, “C’mon,” I say tiredly, getting out of the car and leading him to my humble abode. I’m a bit nervous to be perfectly honest. I’ve never had anyone else but Adam in my home.

I unlock the door and push it open. I set my backpack down on the floor next to the door and walk straight to my hallway closet.

“Make yourself at home, there’s food in the fridge, the bathroom is right here, and obviously there’s the couch.” I take a blanket down from the top shelf and throw it on the couch, “I’m gonna go take a nap in my room, if you need me just wake me up,” I wave, go into my room, and shut the door.

In the distance, I can hear sleep calling to me. I take off my jacket, which I have a tank top under and my pants. I change into a more comfortable pair of pajama shorts and lay down in my bed.

The second my head hits the pillow, I knock out.
