Chapter 18

Wednesday

Bo

I wake up earlier than usual so I can drop Lukas off at home before taking off to school. I shower and get ready for the seven-hour nap I’m about to take.

I wear a dark gray tank top and put a black leather jacket over it. My jeans are as dark as my jacket and ripped at the knee. The entire outfit reminds me of a greaser movie. My black and white high tops sit in the hallway closet and I grab them before sitting on the couch and putting them on.

Lukas comes out of the kitchen with a pop tart in hand.

“I hope it’s okay that I took a pop tart,” Lukas says, mouth full.

“Yeah, it’s fine, like I said ‘mi pantry es su pantry’. But you do owe me a bite,” I stand up from the couch and take a bite off the corner of his pop tart.

“Hey! That’s the best part!” I take my keys and backpack from the floor.

“C’mon Lukas, it’s time to get you home,” I sigh, opening the front door. Of course, my morning has to be made awkward. In his doorway also, is Adam, with a short red head.

“Hey, Bo! I see you finally brought a friend home,” I nod awkwardly and look at Lukas who’s obviously confused.

“Lukas, this is my neighbor, Adam. Adam, this is my friend, Lukas,” Adam steps out of the doorway and shakes Lukas’ hand.

“Nice to meet you, Lukas,” Adam kisses the red headed girl and then sends her on her merry way, “I’ll see you at school.” He shouts after her before mouthing ‘no I won’t’ to us.

I punch him in the shoulder and he smiles. Adam takes my hands and pulls me into a hug. His bare arms are wrapped around my head and his chest is extremely warm. I nearly fall asleep in his embrace but then a cold breeze from the outside startles me.

“I have to get going, Lukas has to go home to get ready for school,” Adam lets me go and has a smug look on his face, “I am going to have to have a conversation with you about personal space,” I say, adjusting my backpack.

“I’ll see you later Bo,” Adam says as we begin to walk away.

“Sorry about that, Adam can be a real jerk sometimes.” Lukas just smiles softly and pulls at the straps of his backpack.

“It’s cool,” He mumbles as we get into the car. I drive him to his house and when we arrive, his mother stands on the porch, “I’ll see you at school, thanks for the ride,” He says as he gets out of the car.

Once he leaves, the comforting smell of marshmallows is gone and is replaced by nothing. I still have an hour and a half to get to school, which means I’m gonna take a nap in the parking lot of the school.

-

I wake up to a raunchy smell. I sit up from the back seat and look out my tinted window. A big black truck that looks oddly familiar sits next to my car.

The smell makes me crinkle my nose and I look at the time. Fifteen minutes until school starts. I open the door and get out of the car with my backpack on. The stench is magnified and when I look, smoke is drifting out of the window.

I knock on the window and slowly, the window rows down. Even more smoke wafts out and I am greeted by the face of none other but Adrian.

“What’s up Bo?” He says and then looks behind him, “Lukas is in the backseat if you wanna get back there and hang out,” I shake my head and lean on my car.

“No thanks, I didn’t know you guys smoked pot though,” I get up on the step and stick my head in the window so I can see Lukas who was sure as hell, blowing out a large cloud of smoke, “I definitely didn’t expect it from you,” He chuckles and leans back in the seat.

“I-I only do it sometimes,” His eyes are nearly closed and I can tell he’s gonna knock out cold if he lays down.

“School starts in ten minutes guys,” I say, patting Adrian’s chest, “Spray your disgusting shit and let’s go.” I hop off the truck and Adrian pops open the door. He hops out too and grabs his backpack where he keeps his Axe. Adrian sprays a shitload all over his body and even sprays some on me.

“Lukas! Let’s go kid!” I open the door to the backseat and Lukas slowly slides out of the back. He takes his own stuff and spritzes some of it. My senses are overwhelmed by his marshmallow scent but I can still smell the underlying weed on his jacket. The both of them put on sunglasses and we all walk into the school building together.

Lukas puts his arm around my shoulder and Adrian does the same. The mixture of the Axe and marshmallows is disgusting.

“Your hair smells really good Bo,” Lukas says, taking my hair in his hand and practically shoving it in his face.

“Does it?!” Adrian asks, taking my hair from his side and sniffing it, “Holy shit it’s like a flower garden.”

“I see you’re being assaulted by Tweedledee and Tweedledum,” Madeline says as we approach the row of lockers that belong to the entire group.

“Tweedledee and Tweedledum are both higher than a kite,” I say quietly as they both struggle to open their lockers.

“Right, well, I have to go take care of better things,” Madeline says as she shuts her locker, “See you later.” She leaves the rest of us to watch the two bozos who forgot their combinations.

“Hey Adrian, what’re you doing tonight?” Sage approaches him, the same cheerleader outfit she was wearing yesterday is on her body.

“I don’t know, why?” Adrian laughs quietly as he pops open his locker, “I did it!” He and Lukas hysterically hug and Adrian pulls out all of his books.

“Cause, I was hoping me and you could hang out later tonight,” She traces circles on his back and he turns his head towards her. His sunglasses rest on his face but I can see he’s having trouble thinking this through.

“By hangout do you mean fuck?” I think he thought he was whispering because of how close he was to her, but he said that out loud.

Sage looks at everyone around and then tucks her hair behind her ear.

“Why are you talking so loud?” She asks quietly, Sage looks at me and I raise my eyebrows. Is she finally gonna say something to me?

“What’re you looking at?” She says quite rudely, I’m taken aback by her attitude and I think I’ve truly lost my friend. Whatever the fuck is wrong with her, I guess she’s done with me.

“I’m looking at a girl who’s desperately trying to get with a guy who doesn’t like her.”

“You’ll regret saying that,” She turns on her heel and walks away from us.

“Wow Bo, I’ve never seen you so sassy!” Adrian says, snapping his fingers in a Z formation.

“Yeah, sassy,” I say, adjusting my backpack straps.
