Summary

Jason slipped away from the house that night undetected. He sang ever so softly "Jesus loves me, this I know . . . for the Bible tells me so." as he watched the house go up in flames. "Bye Mommy." Jason waited until his parents had fallen into their usual drunken stupor, cigarettes dangling from fingertips, and arranged for the still smoldering ember to drop on the blankets conveniently strewn about. it would be his final contact with the Mom who had loved her son so much when he was but a child; the Mom who read him stories about Jesus, and sang "Jesus loves me . . . " while he played with the cross necklace she always wore. And she'd led him to the Lord. But then his Mom succumbed to the strain of a horrendous relationship and became as abusive as her husband. How Jason had loved her, and now, how he hated her! But what he hadn't counted on was the incredible bond they'd formed. Still, he tried to lead a normal life, and he'd succeeded. For a time. But there were people on his trail, and his world and theirs would soon collide in ways totally unexpected. He had played judge, jury, and executioner. Now it was his turn to be judged.

JASON

The plan he had so meticulously worked on these past few years was about to be put in play. All he had to do was wait until they once again fell into a drunken stupor, cigarettes dangling from fingertips as usual, and arrange for the still smouldering ember to drop on to the blankets conveniently strewn about. Nothing unusual about that as they spent most of their time laying about anyway. Nothing that should arouse any suspicion.

He hated the monster he was forced to call dad. Jason’s rage continued to grow until the age of sixteen when he could take it no longer. He had come to realize that his “memories” were indeed real and now someone was going to pay! As for his mom? God, how he had loved her! And then, how he had come to hate her! How could she have abandoned her own son? How could she become as worthless as him?

She, who had protected him against the drunken tyrant became equally abusive. She had cracked under the strain and now joined him in his nightly drinking binges, and soon the mother who had loved her son more than life itself, was to be found no more.

He made sure they were both sleeping and ever so gently bumped his mom’s hand. He ensured that the ember had indeed caught and silently slipped out the back door into the darkness of the night. Making sure he was undetected was paramount and soon he was a few blocks away, perched on the hilltop of the park he had often escaped to, to avoid the hell that he was forced to live in.

Then he saw it, a few flames at first, and then the night lit up before his very eyes. He could hear frantic voices, and a siren screaming in the distance, and still he stayed and watched. From his vantage point he could see everything. The police had arrived, and then the fire truck, and more and more people could be seen scurrying about.

And then he breathed a sigh of relief for suddenly the house became one giant flame, and he knew in his heart of hearts that it was done! Finally!
