Chapter 54

KYLE

Officer Jones arrived, and Kyle’s foot was released from the vicious animal trap. The ambulance was called, and Mom and I were sent to the ER. Kyle remained home while Officer Jones searched the house.

“There’s no sign of forced entry,” Officer Jones said. As usual.

“Okay,” Kyle answered absently.

He saw a stuffed duffel bag on Kyle’s bed. “Is this your room?”

“Yeah.”

“Going somewhere? You don’t look too much like a camper. Fishing?” Kyle was unsure if Officer Jones was just being nosy like a grandpa-next-door or actually trying to fish for evidence and information.

“No. Just got back from the gym,” he answered, his gut instinct telling him it was safer not to mention he was going out.

“Gym, huh?” he eyed Kyle up and down as if he were saying, Where are the muscles, boy?

Kyle’s phone rang.

It was from Sophia.

“Girlfriend of yours?” Officer Jones raised his eyebrows and waggled them up and down.

“Oh, no. It’s just… a sale’s call.”

“Okay. I’m out of here. Unfortunately, we can’t do too much since there’s no sign of forced entry,” he said like Kyle didn’t know that already. “I’ll give you a ride to the hospital.”

“No, it’s okay.”

Officer Jones cast him a look as if he were suddenly a suspect in an attempted murder who plotted to kill his own mother. “Aren’t you worried about your mom?”

Kyle looked more closely at Officer Jones.

He was worried about Mom, but the truth was, a private sleepover night with Sophia was equally important, if not more. Besides, he knew I would call him if any emergency situation arose. Waiting in the lobby while she was being treated did not change anything. So he might as well leave all the waiting to me, was his rationalization.

“Of course I am. I have a bike. I’m going there as soon as you leave,” he said, instantly figuring it’d be safer to just lie.

“Are you out of your mind? It’s too far for a bike ride, son. I’m going back that way anyway. I’ll take you there. No worries.”

It didn’t seem like he had any choice. “Okay,” said Kyle before he texted Sophia:

Something happened. Mom’s at the ER and I have to go over there for a bit. I’ll come over as soon as I’m done. Hope that’s okay…

Sophia wrote back: What? Is she okay?? Come over no matter how late. See you later…

Officer Jones dropped Kyle off at the hospital.

As he stepped to enter the building, he saw Dad walking off into the wooded area with a woman. He followed them and hid behind a tree to listen to their conversation.

His mouth gaped open and couldn’t close. He doubted what he was hearing.

Then Kyle’s eyes grew wide. So wide, if he had two quarters, they’d have fallen right into his eye sockets. Understandable—

He just saw his father killing a woman.
