CHAPTER 13: DEVIL IN THE DETAILS PART THREE

“.…. The filesRook…..They’re not here…..”

“Don’t blame yourself Boots….. They must know, I am on to them…..”

“.…. Missing files….. This would be seen as evidence of some sort of suspicious activity….. Whywould they remove their personnel files? They are incriminating themselves…..”

“.…. Time needed to alter the information on the files….. Maybe, they planned to return the files before their disappearances had been noticed…..”

If the original files are gone, then the back up copy files; they’ll be gone with them. I believe that you are on to something Rook. But now, how do we prove it?”

“Not many an individual can alter police filesto any officially regarded acceptance….. Do you have anyone in mind, that they could use to alter these files?”

“.…. I can only think of one, and she is the worst of all dames…..”

“Sounds like a good girl to keep away from….. What’s her name Boots?”

“.…. Sarah, Sarah McIntyre……”

“.…. You must be pulling my leg now Boots…..”

“No..... The best document forger in Los Angeles, it’s my mother…..”

“Small world, isn’t it?”

ALCATRAZ

Gentlemen? It be time, once again; for my evening walk?”

“..…. You know the routine magic- man! Back of the cell, legs- spreadand hands to the wall!”

“Now, now gentlemen….. Be, just my way of speaking; to those of civil social stature…..”

“Into position Strauss now!”

“Such rudeness…….. Your commands, they are but screams; to the spaces between my ears….. I shall do, as you request of me….. I am in need of much exercise ”

“Nut job! One more word out from you, and I’ll have you pacified!”

The Jailer, motioned two officers standing behind him into position.

“Take the left Scott, I’ll take the right.”

“I’ve got your back Mac.....”

“I really wish you would quit doing that…..”

The mysterious voodoo man against the back wall of the cell, cocked his head slightly to the right; as the Jailer unlocked his cage. A concealed smile of malicious intent formed upon his face. The magic- man leaped fast from his position.

“Mac? Look out!”

The one prisoner that has become known as The Gorgon, stuck a needle to the throat of the highest ranking officer.

“Back off Scott! He’s got a needle….. Get the Warden out of here…..”

“.…. Needle? Not one gentleman, but three…..”

The younger officer reached for his revolver, The Gorgon injected the boy’s superior; and then whipped around to his subordinate. The Jailer made a fast exit of his position to reach the nearest alarm.

“Sleep now gentlemen….. Sleep, you nowever long; ever tight….. Fear not, my anger at you; defiling my right to people’s identification……... What you carry now, this should cover the costs…..”

“Warden? There’s a fire in E- Block!”

“Evil people, evil deeds…..”

“Warden?!”

“Have the doc and his two helpers meet me in E- Block….. Gather what guards you can to put out that fire!”

“Yes- Warden!”

“What cell this time?”

“.…. It’s Strauss sir!”

“Swell! The spook! Sound the alarm….... The Gorgon is loose…... put a call on through to the Coast Guard….. We may need their help…..”

“YesWarden!”

“.…. Fire alarms Slash?”

“Right, numb-skull! First time!”

“You two, with me! First aid kits on hand!”

“You got it doc!”

“…. I think I am going to like this job Slash…..”

“Shut- upCrunch! You big dummy!”

“Trevelle? Stretchers?”

“.…. I’ve got two in hand Doc…..”

“Let’s hustle boys!”

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES

“We seem to have picked up a tail Rook…..”

“Have we now?”

“.…. Unusual tail, it’s a two- wheeler….. An assassin?”

“Could be Boots…..”

“I’ll call up a couple of my boys….. They’ll keep this tail occupied, while we continue to the docks…..”

“You never told me you have a yacht Boots….. The Department, they must be paying you really good…..”

“Yeah….. Five years and a couple of promotions. One boat, no problem….. Besides, it was a gift for my mother…..”

“She made you by it, didn’t she?”

“.….”

“You’re one in a millionBoots….. One in a million…..”

ALCATRAZ

Whatdo we have Doc”

“Two dead….. Both guards…..”

“Grab a couple of body bags, and get them to the morgue….. It looks like, you are going to be acting mortician now too…..”

“Right! Crunch, Slash? Take care of the bodies….. Trevelle, grab the bags; and then the three of you report back to the hospital…..?”

“Where’s the jailer?”

“Gone missing…..”

“You had better make it three body bags then doc…….. This spook that escaped,he isdangerous…..”

“You’ve got it Warden..... We’ll take care of this…..”

The Warden, took up an old familiar position at the closest phone; the man clicking the one button to connect with internal communications.

“Attention, all blocks….. Prisoner escape! Lock down procedures will now be enforced….. Return all prisoners to their cells…..... Maximum guard complimentfor each block….. mobile search units and canine unitsto active duty…..”

“.…. Should I be concerned Warden?”

“Yes! Get this wrapped up, and fast! Some men, they will only play at being so evil……... Misdemeanors, and petty charges of multiple misconducts….. Strauss, the one called The Gorgon; he is evil personified…..”

“Great! So much for job security….. I don’t think we are prepared for this…..”

“When it comes to a man like this doc, we never really are…..”

STREETS OF LOS ANGELES

“The tail is gone Rook….. It looks like my boys scared him off…..”

“Good work Boots….. No time too soon…..”

“Right..... Back to business…... Her boat, it should be anchored to Dock- C….. Your lookingfor: Carrie’s Pride…..”

“.…. Boatnamed after your first wife?”

“.…. Yeah, well….. It was going to be for her….. I haven’t had the chance to change the name of the boat…..”

“Your mother? She always did like that dame, didn’t she?”

“.…. I’ve got nothing more to say…..”

“Ha, ha, ha! That’s alright now Boots….. I think, I can understand where you are coming from….. It’s common tradition among most of our mothers. They truly despise us boys and favor the girls…... It was that for me, and for my father, and for his grandfather…... Some traditions, they’re more at personal selection; than at acceptance of common ideas…..”

“.…. Yeah, what you said…..”

“Ha, ha, ha, ha! You’re a laugh a minute Boots! Keep up that positive attitude…..”

“I’ll do my best…..”

“.…. One question, Boots? Does Carrie still want to knock you upside your head with an iron skillet?”

“No! I removed all of her skillets on my last meeting with mother…….. Iron skillets, pots, and knives…..”

“Good call Boots….. Safety first…..”

“Right..... If that fails, be prepared to duck and run….. And always keep a shot or two of whiskey on hand…..”

“Scotch?”

“Want a swig?”

“.…. Now, that’s not such a bright idea….. You’re a cop, and I am driving…..”

“Special circumstances permit?”

“.…. Maybe after we have parked Boots…..”

“.…. More for me, I am going to need it…..”

ALCATRAZ

Eyes of an experienced fighter, overlooked his two guardian protectors to be.

“.…. How goodare you two?”

Slash shrugged his shoulders and rolled his eyes.

“If you’re looking fore some muscle, we’re among the best…..”

“Right..... I’m the brains, and Crunch there; he’s the brawn…..”

“I hope you are right…..”

Slash smiled, and patted Trevelle on the back.

“Us, we’re not alone you know…... We have a kind of a back- up, should things start to go afoul…..”

Trevelle shook his head, the man grimacing.

“.…. If things do go afoul, we are all dead men….. Have you ever heard of a Jamaican, the name of Strauss?”

“Yeah, The Gorgon….. He’s some kind of witch-doctor, or something; isn’t he?”

“No, no! Slash….. He’s a warlock, or a necromancer or something…..”

Trevelle looked to the ceiling, the man shaking his head once again; a silent prayer to his father on his mind, thought in his own traditional way.

“Great!” Trevelle smarted. “You two, are supposed to protect me..... I might as well try and make a run for it, and get shot down by the guards…..”

“Hey, don’t you fret now Trevelle…..”

“Yeah! We fight a lot better than we talk…..”

“.….Swell! I feel, so much better now.....”

REEVES’ BEACH- SIDE HOUSE

“Assassin from Chinatown?”

“Yes, I have heard of this one; a master of the blade…..”

“The Knife?”

“Yes, I do believe; that is the title he has officially claimed….. How was the supper Lady Minerva?”

“Excellent work Graves…….. It has been quite some time, I have had a chance to eat of so exquisite the meal….. The Rook, and the Mouth? SYNGH- DUCT TOH, he is not the enemy of enemies; that should be taken lightly….. Are they in any danger?”

“No Madame! The Rook, and the Mouth; they are never alone…..”

“I have taken up the liberty of warming up an automobile for you; and I have parked your Packard inside the garage. I do believe that you will be most pleased with my personal choiceof alternate automobiles, provided for your needs…..”

“.…. Reverend Reeves, he is a man of many mysteries isn’t he?”

“Quite right, Madame..... Will you have need of anything else from me today? There is a lady’s black trencher stowed in the trunk, and a wide rimmed hat….. It looks to be raining down upon us hard here, within the next two or three hours…... There is also a choice of two courtesy revolvers and ammunition, inside the glove box…..”
