Chapter 35. Pain

I wake up to the sound of someone calling me.

“Yeah?” I answer grudgingly and forcefully open my eyes a little.

“We’re here,” I realise it’s Norah trying to wake me up. I really don’t have the energy for this.

“Okay,” I mumble and close my eyes.

“I think it’s better you carry her.”

“Of course! It’s not like I can lift her. Put those muscles to use!”

“Are you sure?”

The voices begin to get distant as I start drifting off into a deep slumber again.

I feel arms go under me and my body being lifted up gently as I fall asleep.

I wake up alone in my room. I sigh as I read the note that Norah must have left on the side table.

‘Hey, I’m so sorry I wasn’t there when you woke up, I had to get to work. It was an emergency I’ll be back as soon as I can! Ps. I put your phone on charge. Xx Norah~’

Okay. Well, at least she left a jug of water and a glass. Thank goodness my phone is safe.

I gently pick the jug up and fill up my glass before drinking it. The coolness of the water soothes my throat making me sigh in content.

After a minute of sitting, I grab my phone and switch it on. I should probably call Joe. When the phone switches on I dial his number and it begins ringing.

“Hello? Summer are you okay?” Joe answers the phone and quickly questions me.

“Hey, Joe I’m kind of okay?” I say unsurely.

“You don’t sound so sure,” he teases.

“Yeah, I’m not. It’s just I got into a really bad uh accident. So I won’t be able to come to work until I’m able to. I’m so sorry.”

“Hey, no need to apologise. And as for work take your time I’ll handle it here. I’ll try to come to see you one of these days okay?”

“Oh you don’t have to come see me. I don’t want you to see me like this. And thanks I’ll be back as soon as I’m well.”

“Okay, I’ll see you then get well soon!”

“Thank you,” I answer and hang up.

How long have I been asleep? My stomach begins to growl and I have the urge to pee.

Urgh. Getting up is going to be a mission!
Should I just wait for Norah? No, she might take too long. At least the toilet isn’t too far.

I slowly sit up with the support of my hands. Surprisingly it didn’t hurt as much. The pain killers are probably still working.

I get out of the bed and shuffle to the toilet. After relieving myself I start walking to the kitchen.

My breathing begins to get heavy. Gosh, maybe I should wait for a bit. I lean against the wall and close my eyes while waiting for my breathing to get even.

A few minutes later my breathing gets even. I walk into the kitchen and open the fridge hoping to find something to eat.

I sigh sadly. There’s literally nothing to eat. Should I text Norah? No, I guess I can wait, why should I disturb her.

I make my way back to my room. Excruciating pain suddenly engulfs my bad leg and I yelp.

Tripping over my foot I feel myself falling and hit the hard floor. Groaning in pain I close my eyes stay in the floor.

Things are getting better, aren’t they? I wonder what Ethan would do if he saw me on the floor.

I try getting up but fall back with a thud making me groan loudly. I give up and lay down and stare at the ceiling.

Norah will be home soon. I’ll just wait. Food can wait too. A yawn escapes my mouth. I wonder what Ethan must be doing right now.

Ugh, why do I keep thinking about him?
Despite what I keep saying about not wanting to get involved. My mind just won’t stop thinking about him.

I guess these two months will tell. Where will I go anyway? What will Norah say? Oh no she’s definitely going to freak.

The pain in my leg starts to increase slightly and slowly my body begins to ache. Oh gosh, the painkillers are wearing off. Tears fill my eyes. I try to blink them away but they fall anyway.
Breathing in through my stuffy nose I wipe my nose and eyes with my good hand.

I hate being helpless.

Suddenly my vision begins to get hazy, the ceiling starts spinning I blink a few times but it only gets worse. A few seconds later my eyes become heavy, I couldn’t keep them open and longer. So I give in and close them.

“Summer? Summer!”

I hear a distant voice. But I didn’t have the energy to open my eyes.

I feel hands grasp my shoulder and shake me a little making me let out a groan.

I open my eyes and glare at the person responsible and I end up gulping instead.

Great now I’m about to get lectured by Ethan.

“Hey Ethan.” I greet with a small forced smile.

Ethan’s face turns from concerned to anger in a flash.

“What were you thinking, getting out of bed like that? Were you not supposed to rest, and where the hell is Norah? She had to be with you at all times!” He says angrily.

“I was just getting myself some food! And Norah had to get to work. I can’t depend on her and ask her to stop all her work.” I explain tiredly.

“Well I’m glad I chose to buy your medicines and come here, or else I wouldn’t even know,” he says still upset.

“Seriously Ethan just let it be alright. I’m fine I was just laying down for a bit.”

“On the hard floor?” He asks.

“Yes?” I say sheepishly.

“C’ mon, let’s get you to bed,” he says as he puts his other hand under my legs and lifts me up.

“That’s so not necessary I could’ve just gone myself,” I say embarrassed.

“Right,” he mumbled rolling his eyes.

He reaches my room and gently places me down on the bed. I wince visibly and he sees it.

“Uh, my pain killers have worn off,” I answer as the pain I was ignoring gets worse.

“Where did Norah leave your medicines?”

“Check in the bedside drawer.”

He moves towards the drawer and opens it. Luckily it really was in there. He takes the medicine and fills the glass that was on the drawer with water Norah had left.

Just before I take the tablets my stomach growls loudly.

You have got to be kidding me.

I look down embarrassed and I hear Ethan sigh.

“I’ll get you something to eat first. Then I’ll give you the medicine.” He says.

“That’s not necessary, just give me the medicine I’ll eat later.”

“What?” I say and look and Ethan angrily.

“I said no, I will not give you medicines on an empty stomach,” Ethan explains.

“But I’m in pain!” I exclaim.

“Maybe you should’ve called me then.” He says and I glare at him.

“I didn’t want to disturb you,” I answer making him glare at me.

We both glare at each other angrily.

“Woah; it’s getting heated in here,” Norah says. My eyes snap towards the door. Norah stood against the door with her arms crossed looking at us with amusement dancing in her eyes.

Bad timing Norah.

“Hey Norah,” I smile towards her.

“Hey Summer sleep well?”

“Where were you? Do you have any idea how I found summer?” Ethan says angrily.

“Ethan,” I say warningly.

“What do you mean,” Norah says confused.

“Norah I’m fine Ethan’s just exaggerating,” I say.

“Exaggerating? I found you laying on the floor, do you have any idea how scared I was!” he says frustrated as he runs his hands through his hair and rubs his face.

“I’m so sorry summer, I didn’t know that would happen. Are you okay?” Norah worriedly asks.

“I’m fine Norah, the pain killers just wore off so the pain is back.”

“You should have just stayed or called me if you were leaving,” Ethan says.

Oh gosh, will he stop already!

“You’re right I’m sorry summer.”

I shake my head. “Norah it’s fine, let’s just end the topic, Ethan I get that you’re worried but can you please just let it be? Please? For me?” I say tiredly.

“Okay, I’ll just get you some food.”

I don’t have food!

“Oh, yeah I bright us some food summer I saw your fridge and stuff empty so I brought us some take out.”

“Thanks, Norah,” I say gratefully. She walks out of the room to get the food. The room becomes quiet and I look towards Ethan who is looking back at me.

“What?” I ask.

“Nothing,” he says as he shakes his head.

Norah comes back with the food. Ethan helps me sit up and places the food on my laps. Food which consists of soup.

“Soup?” I say unhappily.

“Yup,” Norah says.

I sigh and try to pick up the spoon with shaky hands. Ethan notices this and takes the spoon. He scoops the soup and brings it up to my mouth. I look at him and drink it.

Hmmm well, at least it tastes nice.

He feeds me until the soup finishes. After a few seconds, Ethan hands me the painkillers and other tablets. He fills the glass that was next to the jug with water and gives it to me. I drink the tablets fast and sigh.

I hate this. How long will I have to drink these medicines? I look around the room and realise Norah isn’t here.

“Where’s Norah?” I ask Ethan.

“She’s in the sitting room.” He answers.

“You should rest,” he says as he picks the soup bowl.

“I’m not tired,” I say. Norah comes in the room.

“I’ll go leave this in the kitchen,” Ethan says and I nod my head as Norah sits at the edge of the bed.

“So Ethan and you huh,” Norah teases making me roll my eyes.

“No,” I say grumpily.

Ethan walks in and sits beside me in the bed. ,

“How’s Hayden,” he asks her.

“He’s fine, busy at work right now,”

“How did you two meet?” He asks as he tries to continue the conversation making me smile.

At least he’s trying.

I listen to their conversation and give in some of my input when she asks about work.

My eyes begin to get heavy, probably because of the effect of the painkillers. I force them open not wanting to fall asleep.

“Sleep Summer,” Ethan whispers as he looks at me.

“Not sleepy,” I mumble stubbornly with droopy eyes.

He stands up and gently pushes my shoulders back making me lie down flat.

“Okay, just lie down then okay?” He says and I nod my head tiredly. I force my eyes open. I still want to talk to them. I’ve slept enough. Ethan and Norah continue talking. While I mumble out my input.

Ethan runs his hands through my hair as he continues talking.

I finally give in and close my eyes. I feel a blanket being pulled over me.

“Not sleepy huh,” I hear his voice distantly. But I’m far too gone to answer.
