Chapter 9. Ditched

Before Ethan could get any closer, Toby barks, causing us to move away.

Toby jumps on Ethan making him fall back and growls at him. My eyes widen, and I pick Toby up.

“Toby? Why are you growling at Ethan?” I question. He continues his growling.

Ethan gets up wiping away the back of his jeans, although his already dirty so it doesn’t really make much of a difference, and glares at Toby.

“I’m so sorry Ethan he’s actually friendly I don’t know what’s wrong with him,” I say worriedly.

“It’s okay, he’s probably just jealous of how close we were,” he chuckles.

“Yeh probably.”

His phone begins to ring, making me look at him in confusion. Didn’t he just fall into the water? His phone should be dead.

“My phones water resistant and the casing makes it even more waterproof,” he explains seeing my confused face.

Huh, show off.

Nodding, I continue to pet Toby, trying to calm him down.

Ethan comes forward and tries to pet Toby too, but Toby snaps his teeth at him almost biting Ethan’s hand if I hadn’t moved back in time.

“I’m just going to take this call, excuse me please,” he says and walks past me to take the call. Hmm, must be some important and personal phone call.

Taking Toby in I search for Joe, maybe he’ll know what’s wrong with him.

“Joe?” I call out.

“Over here!”

I follow his voice; Joe was replacing the dogs’ food bowls.

“What’s wrong?” Joe asks.

“It’s Toby; he just jumped on Ethan and started growling at him.”

“What? He’s never done that before, he’s actually friendly,” he says confused.

“Maybe he’s just hungry?”

“Uh yes, maybe,” He utters, still confused.

I wonder where Ethan is; I look around the store and see no sign of him.

“Uh Joe, where’s Ethan?”

“He left in a hurry, did he not tell you before he left?”

“No, it must’ve been an emergency I guess.”

I can’t believe him. URGH. You know what? Never mind, that shouldn’t affect me at all.

“Summer, we have a customer upfront, why don’t you take care of them.”

“Me? Are you sure, I’m not really good with all that” I chuckle nervously.

“Ah, don’t you worry, I have full faith in you, be confident and you’ll do just fine.” He encouraged and pushes me towards the front.

“Okay, I’ll do it.”

I walk to the front and see a lady and a child, the child’s jumping up and down while looking at the little animals.

“Hello, I’m Summer, how may I help you?” I greet and smile trying to be as polite and as confident as possible.

The lady turns and looks at me with a kind smile.

“Hi, I’m Rachel, I’m looking for a pet for my little girl,” she says smiling at her daughter.

“Aww aren’t you a cutie pie,” I gush while kneeling in front of her the little girl. She hides behind her mum feeling shy.

“What kind of animal are you looking for?” I ask the mum while getting up.

“Cat!” The little girl says loudly making me jump a little.

“Olivia!” Chides her mum.

“Oh that’s okay, she’s just a little excited, aren’t you Olivia?” I say calmly.

“I’m sorry,” the little girl says quietly.

“Follow me, I’ll show you the cats we have and you can pick one to adopt,” I say to them. Olivia smiles brightly and nods her head.

I take them to the cattery and show them the cats. We have ten cats, both male and female.

“Mommy I want them all!”

“Aww honey, we agreed you’ll pick one”

Laughing I ask “have you decided?”

“Uh I, I want that one” she points at the smallest cat that’s sitting at the corner playing with the little ball of yarn.

“Okay I’ll just go get it”

I open the cattery and pick the little cat up. Petting it, I take the little fur ball to Olivia.

“Here you go,” I say while giving Olivia the cat.

I close the door and ask them to follow me to the desk. Luckily Joe was there.

“Hello,” he greets the two of them with a smile.

“Hey,” the lady greets and Olivia doesn’t answer, she’s concentrating on her cat.

“I see you’ve found what you came for,” Joe says happily as he notices Olivia with the cat.

“Yes, thank you so much for your help Summer.”

“No problem at all.”

“Let me get the papers you can sign, while Summer tells you how to take care of him.”

“Oh, he’s a boy then.”

“Yes,” Joe answers and heads to his office to get the papers.

“Okay so, you need to feed him any kind of cat food, change his litter box, always keep it clean, and always fill his bowl with fresh water.

Joe appears with the papers and sets them on the table.

“Here are the papers, you just have to sign and fill in your contact details,” Joe explains to Rachel.

She takes the pen next to the papers and fills it in while I watch Olivia play with her pet.

“Have you decided a name?” I ask Olivia.

“I’ve always wanted to name a cat Fuzzy.”

“Fuzzy? Well, that’s a cute name,”

“Of course,” I grin at her, which made her smile at me. So adorable.

“Olivia let’s go, thanks again Summer for your help.”

I smile at her and wave goodbye, Olivia says bye and waves too.

“Well Summer, how does it feel? Your first customer,” Joe asks with a smile.

“It feels amazing, thank you for believing in me Joe, I couldn’t have done it without you.

“Sometimes all people need is a little push, to make them believe in themselves.”

“You’re right, everyone is capable.”

“Alright I guess you’re done for the day, you can go home, here’s the letter with the details of your pay.”

“Thanks and oh what about the chickens?”

“I’ll wait for the owners, I called them, they’re on their way.”

“Okay, see you tomorrow.”

“See you.”

I walk out the door, feeling the breeze hit my face I close my eyes and take in a deep breathe.

Opening my eyes I start my short walk home. I pass by the jewellery store which keeps reminding me of Ethan because of those earrings.

Ethan, I can’t believe he ditched me. The least he could’ve done is leave a message. Stupid blue-eyed man. I run my fingers hands through my wavy red hair that I tied into a ponytail, reminding me of how he said my hair reminds him of someone.

Next time I meet him I’ll ask him who he was talking about. He barely talks about himself, which is weird because he is always asking me things about myself.

It’s like he’s hiding something about himself. Shaking my head I ignore the thoughts. I look ahead, there weren’t many people around, well it is evening.

Looking to the left, I see I’ve already reached the bakery; maybe I could get a cupcake before I reach home.

I stop and wait for the cars to pass like the others that want to cross too. The traffic light switched to red making all the cars stop. The others begin crossing in a hurry, just as I was about to cross I look in front. I gasped, my heart started to beat faster, and I take a step back. Fear is all I felt, my breathing became erratic, it was the same man, he was watching me. His green eyes staring directly into mine. I still couldn’t see his face clearly because of the shadow. He raises his hand to lower his fedora, my eyes widen, someone bumps into me making me move a little.

I look back in front, there’s nobody standing there, I look around to see where he is. He just disappeared.

Instead of going to the bakery, I rush home. Quickly entering the apartment I shut the door. Breathe; breathe Summer, I take in slow breaths. I go to the bathroom and wash my face, letting the coolness of the water calm me. I breathe in and stare at myself, why? Why is this happening to me?

I close my eyes and control my tears, no! I’m not going to cry, I’ve done enough of that. Splashing my face with water again, I stare at my face. I start the shower, I feel gross, with all sweat from chasing the chickens and running from Ethan.

I just need to shower and sleep this off. I’ve just moved here, so there’s no way anyone can be out to get me. The only people I know are Mary, Ethan and Joe.

After showering, eating and doing my daily routine I close all my windows and shut the curtains.

I double check the door to make sure it’s locked properly. Satisfied I go to my room and grab my phone

Getting in bed I log in to my twitter account and scroll through some tweets, I don’t really tweet, I prefer just reading them.

My eyes were getting droopy, I check my phone for any messages, but found none. Ethan is such a butt, honestly, if he doesn’t have a good excuse, I’m going to be so mad.
