She opened her eyes; the light had been open and saw James standing in front of her. She tried to move but couldn’t, she looked down at her feet and saw that she had been tied to the bed.
“What’s going on? Why did you tie me?”
“Why did you come here Ashley, you ruined everything.”
“What? Untie me, please.”
“You weren’t supposed to start remembering the past. The doctors said you had a fifteen percent change too.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You asked me who Chris was… didn’t you?”
“Yes, but what doest that have to do with anything, let me go.”
“Don’t you want to know who Chris it?”
“I don’t care… why are you doing this to me?”
“I’m Chris, Ashley.”
“No your not… your James, my husband.”
“James is dead. And you told me I should have been the one, but you don’t remember that, right? I remember being very mad at you for saying that and I knew I had to get even. I tried killing you honey, you almost died in a car crash, and it was my entire fault. I was so proud of myself, thinking you had died. But you hadn’t died now did you, you only forgot everything that had happened. I had all the pictures of you and James together, I wanted to be James and because you forgot I became James just for you. I wanted you to love me like you had loved James. I was fine until you brought up Chris. Now why did you do that, hen? Why couldn’t you let me be the man who loves and cares for you, forever.”
“James, what’s wrong with you?”
“I told you I’m not James. My brother is dead. Look.”
He pulled off four pictures off the wall. He put them in front of her face. She saw James and his twin brother. They were identical. No even the color of their eyes or height was different. Ashley started crying.
“Are you going to kill me Chris? Are you?”
“No, I love you Ashley. Were going to stay here, live here until the day we die. Like we promised to God.”
“Fuck you! I don’t love you and never had. I love James!”
“Your loving a… do you want to see him?
“Just wait a minute I’ll get James to come see you, it’s been such a long time…”
“James is dead!”
“It’s nice to hear you say it, but still…”
He looked into a box on the other side of the room where there was also sticks. He held a smaller box and opened it. He threw the contents on Ashley.
“Ahh…. Get it off!”
“Don’t you love him anymore?”
“No, I love you Chris, you!”
Chris looked at her, looked into her eyes and didn’t notice she was lying.
“What did you say?”
“I love you Chris. I love you!”
He walked towards her and leaned over her.
“Let’s get this dirty off of you, my love.”
He took scissors started to cut off her gown to throw away the remains of his brother.
“Untie me, Chris. How can I touch you if I am tied?”
He hesitated but then gave in and cut off the ropes from her hands.
“And my feet?”
“I don’t want you running away now do I?”
She smiled at him and put her arms around his neck, kissing him. He pulled her up and held her waist kissing her as he laid her down on the bed she went on the left side to be closer to the sticks. He wanted to make love to his wife but couldn’t because her feet where tied. He took the scissors and cut off the ropes without thinking she might run away from him. She pulled herself to the end of the bed.
“It’s more comfortable over here.” She lied.
He moved towards and started kissing her neck. She pulled her arms out and noticed she could reach one. Ashley took it and smashed it over her husband’s head, five times. She started to run; when she looked back Chris hadn’t moved. She ran into house to find the key’s for the car. She knew he had put them in his briefcase because she had seen him put them. She opened it and took the keys. As she ran down the stairs she hurd Chris screaming her name out back. She ran outside on the small bridge and ran to the car, opened the car doors and started it. Chris came outside with a gun.
“Ashley don’t make me try to kill you a second time.” He screamed at her.
She looked at him, his eyes were fiery red, and she could see the anger and the heartbreak in them. She press the gas and drove at him. He didn’t move an inch. Without her in his life, he would rather be dead. Ashley hit him and the gun flew out of his hand onto the grass as he flew across the bridge. She ran outside taking the gun and walked towards him. As she stood over his she picked him up from the ground, feeling a little sorry for him. He could barely stand up, she put him on the side of the bridge and walked a few steps back.
“This is for what you did to James.” She said.
She pulled the gun up and shot at his head. He flew backwards into the water and started to sink. She looked at the bobbles but couldn’t feel bad anymore. She knew she had done the right thing, either she died or he did. She walked to the house took all her belongs and drove off into the forest. She wished she could remember only the past and not the present, but she knew that that was never going to happen.
