Andrew sits in his room, on his xbox one, playing Call of Duty with his best friend, Kyle, online. When he went around a corner, he saw Kyle. He head shot him and Kyle asks, “Hey Andrew, have you heard the rumors?”
He completely ignores the fact that Andrew just one shot him.
Andrew thinks about it and replies, “Uh, no.”
Kyle stays quiet for a few seconds and says, “Well, apparently there’s this old abandoned castle in the woods just a few blocks from where I live. And the rumors say that the castle is haunted.”
Andrew rolls his eyes and says, “And?”
“I think we should go and see if it's haunted for ourselves.” says Kyle.
Andrew’s eyes grow big, “Are you insane! There is no way I am going into that castle.”
“Come on Andrew, are you scared.” Kyle says in a mocking voice, “It could be a story that Natalie might like to hear.”
Andrew blushes and asks, “W-What! Why would I care what she would think?”
“Because you like her.” Kyle laughs. Andrew blushes even more. “And every time I talk about her you blush as red as a tomato.”
“I do not!” Says Andrew, realizing Kyle’s right. “She’s my friend. We have been friends since we were in the 3rd grade.”
“I know, but you do blush a lot when we are at school.” Kyle tries to hold back more laughter, Andrew can tell.
“Well, I would say I would go even if you didn’t mention her.” Andrew says.
“Yeah sure you would.” Kyle says, sarcastically.
“Okay, okay. So what's the plan for going to this haunted castle?” Andrew asks once he stops blushing.
Kyle hesitates. “I don’t know. I haven’t gone that far yet.”
Andrew thinks for about 4 seconds then asks, “Ok, how about I come over and hang out with you for the weekend?”
“Sure.” Kyle replies as he then obliterates Andrew from behind when there was only like 2 seconds left on the timer. They were now on the home screen trying to figure out what the next match was gonna be. “Gotcha! Man that was so funny. I was behind you for a solid minute and you didn’t even notice.” Kyle says, laughing.
Andrew frowns and says, “Really Kyle.”
Kyle continues laughing. “Oh come on.” He says, “You gotta admit, that was pretty funny.”
“Ok, whatever you say.” Andrew’s still frowning. After a minute or two he asks, “Hey, what time is it?”
Kyle stops laughing and says, “Wait, what? Could you repeat that I couldn’t hear you, I was laughing so hard.” After Andrew repeats himself Kyle says, “I don’t know. Give me a second.” After a few seconds he says, “It’s going on 9:00 pm.”
“Hey maybe we...”
Andrew gets cut off by his mother who had opened his bedroom door, she says, “Come on Andrew. It’s time to go to bed.”
“Okay, mom.” replies Andrew as she closes the door and leaves. Andrew brings his attention back to Kyle and says, “Sorry, Kyle. I should get off now. My mom, she...”
Kyle cuts him off. “I know, I heard.” He goes quiet for a few seconds, yawns, then continues talking. “I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”
“Okay. I should get off soon. If I don’t my mom will get mad at me for not listening.” Says Andrew.
Kyle yawns again. “Yeah.” he says. “Good night.”
“Good night.” Andrew replies. He leaves the party and Andrew does the same. Andrew turns off his xbox then gets up to turn off his bedroom light. He walks back over to his bed and lays down. As he lays there he thinks to myself, “I don’t know if I should go to the haunted castle. It seems like a bad idea, but I'm gonna go anyway because Kyle is my friend and he wouldn’t want to go alone.” He yawns and closes his eyes. He starts to count some sheep because why not? He fell asleep when he got to fourteen.
The next morning, Andrew was sitting at his computer trying to think of who to do his school project on in history. It’s due on Monday and the only thing he has typed his name in the top right hand corner of the screen. Andrew looks at the time, it’s 9:43 am. He stretches and takes his glasses off and rub his eyes with his left hand using his index finger and thumb. While he was thinking, his phone goes off. He looks over at his phone and sees that Kyle was trying to facetime him. He pauses for a second. “Wait.” He says to himself. “He never facetimes me.” He hits the green phone button and props his phone up on the small phone stand to the left side of his keyboard.
“Hey,” Kyle says.
“Why are you facetiming me?” asks Andrew. “You never facetime me.” Andrew has a confused look on his face.
“I wanted to try something new,” says Kyle.
Andrew just shrugs and asks him, “Okay. So how are you?”
Kyle smiles. “I'm doing great. Hey, how is that assignment for History coming along?”
Andrew looks up at his computer then looks back at Kyle. “Umm. It’s going…..great.”
“We both know you’re lying, Andrew.”
“Yeah, you’re right. I'm not doing too well.” Andrew looks at his computer screen again.
“So.” says Kyle, “Remember what we were talking about yesterday?” Andrew looks back at him and replies, “Yeah I remember.” Kyle shifts in his chair.
“Well.” he starts off, “I've been thinking...”
“You're not backing out now are you?” asks Andrew.
“What? No. I just...what if it really is haunted? I don’t know what I would do if there was a real ghost. Know what I mean? I'm just a bit worried that something bad will end up happening.” he says looking down.
“Hey.” Andrew says, “Kyle, look at me.” he looks up at Andrew. “Nothing bad is gonna happen. I promise you that, okay? If some scary ghost is frightening you then I will step in and protect you. It’s what a good friend would do.”
Kyle smiles. “Thanks. I don’t know what I would do if you weren’t my friend.”
“Same.” replies Andrew. “Anyway, do you know when we should head to the haunted castle?”
“Maybe sometime during the night.” Kyle says, “Go ask your mom if you can come stay over for the weekend then at night when everyone is asleep we can sneak outside and make our way to the haunted castle.”
“Okay.” Andrew says. “I'm gonna go ask my mom I will message you when I have.”
“Okay.” Kyle says before he hangs up the call. Andrew gets up from his chair and walks out of his room and to the kitchen where his mom is.
“Hey mom, can I stay over Kyle’s for the weekend?” he asks her.
“Sure sweetie.” She says, “Go pack some things and I will take you there.”
“Okay mom.” Andrew runs back to his room. He goes over to his desk and sits down in his chair. About a minute passes and his phone goes off. He pushes the green phone button and Kyle’s face appears on the screen.
“Hi.” he says.
“Hey.” Andrew replies.
“So.” he begins. “What did she say?”
“She said yes.”
“Yay.” Kyle says, smiling. “So when are you coming?” Andrew thinks about it for a few seconds before replying. “In a bit. I just gotta grab some things then my mom will take me there.”
“Okay.” Kyle says adjusting himself on his chair. “When you get here we can start making a plan for going to the…” he pauses. “The haunted castle.” Andrew raises an eyebrow.
“Are you okay?” He asks.
“Yeah I'm okay.” Kyle replies quickly.
“Okay.” Andrew says shrugging. He gets up out of his chair and walks over to his closet. He grabs his suitcase and starts to pack a few things. After about 5 minutes he had finished packing. Andrew walks back over to his computer, closes it and picks it up. He then goes to the suitcase and puts the computer into a secret compartment and zips it up after. After that he goes to get his phone off of the stand and walk over to stand next to my bed with the suitcase sitting on it.
“I packed some things so now I'm gonna get off now and then my mom is gonna take me to your house.”
“Okay.” says Kyle. “See you then.” he hangs up the call. Andrew puts my phone into his pocket. He picks his suitcase up off his bed, sets it on the ground, grabs the handle of the suitcase and extends it.
He starts heading out of his bedroom door. He walks out into the kitchen and his mom is doing the dishes. “Hey mom,” he says. “I'm ready.” She turns around from the sink.
“Okay honey. Just give me a few seconds.” she says as she dries off her hands with the small hand towel hanging next to her. After drying off her hands she says, “Okay. Let’s go.” she walks over to the small coffee table to grab her keys.
“Let’s go.” she says opening the door. She starts to walk outside, Andrew follows her and closes the door behind him. They walk down the stairs and over to the car.
“Are you buckled in?” his mom asks when they were in the car.
“Yeah.” Andrew replies. She starts the car and they begin to pull out of the driveway. On the way to Kyle’s house Andrew starts thinking about the haunted house. He doesn’t tell his mom about it because she must never know. He must keep it a secret.
What if we do encounter a ghost? His mom looks up in the rearview mirror, then back at the road again.
“Whatcha thinking about going back there?” she asks him. Andrew rushes trying to figure out something to say.
“Uh...history.” he says when he thinks of something. “I was thinking about who to do my project on in history.”
She frowns. “You still haven’t figured that out yet?” Andrew shakes his head.
“Nope.” he says leaning his head back on the seat and closing his eyes.
About 25 minutes later they were at Kyle’s house.
“Honey, we’re here.” Andrew hears his mom say. He stretches and takes off his glasses to rub his eyes then puts them back on his face. He looks at his watch. It’s going on 10:23 am. Andrew unbuckles his seatbelt and opens the car door and gets out. He closes the door behind him and makes his way to the back of the car to get his suitcase that he brought with him.
“Mom pop the trunk.” he says as he points to the trunk of the car. She pushes a button and the trunk opens. Andrew lifts it up and picks up the suitcase, sets it on the ground, extends the handle and pulls the suitcase behind him as he walks over to the driver door. His mom had just opened it and got out.
“Have fun.” she says hugging him. “Be good.”
“I will.” he replies. “Bye.”
As she gets back into the car and drives away Andrew walks up to Kyle’s front porch. Kyle is waiting for him at the top of the stairs.
He waves and says, “Hey, finally you're here.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Andrew asks, smirking.
“I’ve been waiting for what seemed like hours.” he says with a pouty face. Andrew rolls his eyes.
“Dude, it hasn’t been hours.”
“I know. It just seemed like it.” he pauses. “It’s been a while since the last time you were here.” Andrew nods.
“Yeah man. It has.”
“Come on.” he says, opening the front door and holding it for Andrew. He walks in and closes the door behind him.
“So.” Andrew starts off. “What’s the plan?” Kyle holds up his hand indicating for Andrew to shush. He looks away from Andrew and waits for a few seconds. He looks at Kyle, confused. He looks back at Andrew.
“Let’s talk about it in my room.” he motions for Andrew to follow him. They walk to Kyle’s room and Andrew notices there are two TV’s. Kyle walks over to his bed and sits down on his knees. He pulls out another xbox.
“Wait. You have two xboxes now?” asks Andrew.
“Yeah.” Kyle replies as he goes to the other TV and plugs in the extra xbox to it. “I got another xbox so whenever you come over you can use the extra one and play Call Of Duty with me. I got it for you.” he smiles.
“That's very sweet of you.” Andrew says as Kyle turns on the xbox and hands him a controller. Once the xbox was on Kyle takes the Call Of Duty disc out of the case and puts it into the console.
“There.” Kyle says as he walks over to his own xbox and picks up his controller. “I've been playing Call Of Duty before you got here.” he pauses. “Give me a second and I will invite you to a match.”
“Okay.” replies Andrew, who is waiting on the home screen.
