Chapter 14

Alex and Stephen were waiting in Stephen’s car, in the drive way of an older home in a quiet neighborhood. The house wasn’t exactly falling down, but it had definitely been ignored over the years. There was an older model sedan parked directly in front of them, with what had to be at least 50 bumper stickers plastered all over the back glass and bumper. It was the type of car and house that you would typically go out of your way to avoid. But here they were, about to go inside and actually meet the owner of both.

“Are you sure about this Stephen? I know you said this guy was a little eccentric, but come on. If it wasn’t for the car, I would assume that no one has lived here for years.”

“Look, I’m not saying you have to become best friends with the guy, but just listen to what he has to say. Alright, he’s a little kooky, but some of his ideas and theories really make you think. He’s thought about this thing from so many different angles and can fill in some of the holes that we’ve come across over the years.”

“If you say so.”

“Come on. I don’t want to keep him waiting. He’s a little skittish, so if he sees us sitting out here talking, we may scare him off.”

The two friends got out of the car and began walking up to the front door. They were just about to ring the doorbell when the garage door opened halfway. They couldn’t see anyone inside, but they soon heard a man’s voice yell, “What do you want?”

Startled, Stephen looked back at Alex before responding to the voice.

“Mr. Joseph, it’s Stephen Phillips. We met a couple of days ago. I brought my friend that I was telling you about.”

There were a few seconds of silence that seemed to drag on. Stephen and Alex looked at each other, both equally confused. Finally, the voice answered back.

“Well, what are you waiting for? You said you wanted to talk, so let’s talk.”

Just then the garage door slowly began to creak open. Stephen and Alex both started walking that way.

“Right, well first off, I was telling Alex about your theory on the potential members of the..”

“Not out there! Get in here for God’s sake! For all I know you two were followed here.”

The garage door opened slightly more, and Alex and Stephen made their way inside, not sure what they had gotten themselves into.
