Chapter 84

Alex and Stephen weren’t exactly sure what The Conductor was up to either. At the moment they were sitting there with Sebastian, waiting on him to show up. Not much was said on the ride over, with each of them trying to process internally what was going on.

“So, let me get this straight”, Stephen asked Sebastian. “You and this ‘The Conductor’, or Pete, have been working together this entire time?”

“No, not at all”, answered Sebastian. “I had never met him before last week. The only people I was in contact with were my mentor James and his three colleagues. It was just James and I at first, then about a month ago, he told me about a plan to have me train with the other three. He told me that the directive came from The Conductor but I never spoke with him about any of it.”

“Until last week?”, replied Alex.

“Right. Last week, I was coming home from work, and sitting there in my apartment was this guy. As you can imagine I was scared to death, thinking that I had finally been found out. Then he told me who he was and laid out what his intentions were. I didn’t believe him at first, but it didn’t take long for him to convince me he was the real deal. From the way he described it to me though, I thought the plan would take longer. Something about waiting on confirmation from Asia. But apparently something happened and here we are. I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you guys anything about it, but he was very clear about keeping everything under wraps. I hope you understand.”

They did understand. If The Conductor’s intentions were true, then they were about to finally unmask ‘The Keepers’ once and for all. Sebastian had no choice but to go along with the plan.

“Hope you guys haven’t been waiting long.” The three friends all jumped simultaneously as Pete appeared from the back of the room that they had been waiting in.

“Do you ever just enter a room like a normal person?”, Stephen asked.

“How fun would that be? Besides, it’s a good lesson. Always keep your eyes open and be ready for anything. The stakes are getting serious, gentlemen. I’m going to help you as much as I can, but I can’t always be there. Now, let’s get started.”
