Chapter 3 Sanchez High

Chapter 3

Avery found herself standing on the other side of the road looking at everyone entering the school premises.

Sanchez high wasn't an ideal school for her because she's being picked on every day. The bullying started when everyone found out that she was an orphan and the tragic story about how her parents died. Instead of her getting some support, some learners said she must've had something to do with her parents death. Those words broke her heart the very first time she heard them but she just learned to live with it because she couldn't change how people feel.

She took a deep breath and crossed the road and entered the school gate. She pulled her beanie more on her face and kept her head down passing some of her school mates.

"Hey Sexy." Someone blocked her way and she slightly looked up and saw Mark. The school quarterback, looking very handsome. He looked good in every clothing he wore even his school uniform. He had beautiful black hair and emerald gorgeous eyes that Avery stared at. "Can I get your number?" He asked arching his brow.

"My-my number?" Avery asked nervously.

"Yes your phone number." He said.

"Uhm I don't have a phone." She answered truthfully.

"Are you serious?" He asked placing his hands inside his pockets and she just nodded.

"I have to go to class." She said attempting to walk away but he blocked her way again and his friends started laughing and some suppressed their laughs.

"Wait... let me take you out this weekend." He suddenly said and Avery was surprised. This must've been some kind of joke.

"Wha-what?" She asked because she was taken aback.

"How does this Friday sound? We will go out to watch a movie or whatever you prefer." He said and he looked genuine.

"Why do you want to go out with me Mark? There are a lot of girls you can ask. Why me?" She asked softly.

"Because you seem like a fun girl to hang out with plus you're hot." He tilted his head. "Any guy would be lucky to have you by his side. You're really beautiful Avery." He said and she was more surprised that he complimented her and that he even knew her name.

"You think I'm beautiful?" She asked shyly.

"Yeah I do." He replied chuckling.

"Oh thanks..." she trailed off fixing her beanie.

"So what do you say? Are we on this Friday?" He asked.

"Sure. I'd like that." She replied feeling giddy inside.

He suddenly came next to her and side hugged her. "Wow that was easy." He said smiling. "You really are naïve, aren't you?" He asked her with a smirk on his face.

"What do you mean?" She asked then looked up at him.

"Do you honestly think that Mark Flintstone would actually go out with a girl like you?" He asked her and leaned away from her and she looked at him with tears forming in her eyes. This moment showed her that Mark was a real asshole and he was right when he said she was naïve. She actually believed him.

The look in Avery's eyes showed him that she was really hurt about what he said. A tear dropped on her cheek and something inside Mark churned when he saw her tears. At this very moment he wanted to console her but the damage was already done plus his friends were here. The ones he was trying to impress.

Avery wiped off her tears as she started walking away. She felt people starting to stare at her and they also started to laugh every time she passed through them. The fact that she was keeping her head down made her bump into someone and the books in her arms flew in the air and landed on the floor.

"I'm so sorry." She quickly said gathering her fallen books shakingly. She had hoped that whoever she bumped into wasn't one of Mark's friends because she was in no mood to be mocked or given a hard time.

"I'm the one that should apologize. I wasn't really looking where I was walking. I'm really sorry." The manly voice said.

Avery slowly looked up at the deep voice that just apologized to her and she came across the most handsome human being she had ever seen. Oliver and Mark was nothing compared to him. He was Tony Mahfud gorgeous. Every feature on his face was perfect. The pair locked eyes and stared at each other for a few seconds that felt like minutes.

"Are you okay?" He asked and his minty breath hit Avery's nostrils and her voice caught up in her throat so she just nodded instead. They both got up and she turned to leave when he stopped her. "You forgot this one." He said. She looked back and he was holding up one of her books and he handed it to her as she took it from him.

"Thank you." She finally spoke.

He approached her and took something from her back giving it to her. "Don't let these fools ever hug you again." He suddenly said and he left Avery all confused.

She finally read the note that was on her hands and now she knew why everyone was laughing at her and she got emotional all over again and tears built up in eyes. She already knew that this was Mark's doing. Now she understood what the guy from earlier on meant when he said not to let these fools hug her. He meant well.

Someone hugged her from behind and she already knew who it was when she saw her bracelet. It was her bestfriend Casey. She came to stand in front of Avery and she saw her sadness on her face.

"Ave? Are you okay? What happened?" She asked worriedly. Avery gave her the note in her hands.

"It was pasted on my back." She sadly said.

"A dumb pathetic prude? Seriously? Who did this?" Casey asked looking angry after she read the note.

"It doesn't matter, I'm going to the bathroom. I need some time out." Avery said.

"You know what? I'm sick of this." Casey stated taking her bestfriends hand and they walked outside standing at the school entrance.

"LISTEN UP BITCHES!" She said out loud and everyone's gaze fell upon them. "This girl standing right next to me is my bestfriend and I'm sick of you people picking on her. She's not your plaything. Pick on someone your own size." She said out loud.

Brenda the mean girl started laughing and her troops joined her and the rest of the school joined them because they thought this was some joke. Avery attempted to leave but Casey tightened her grip on her wrist not to leave because she wasn't done.

"Did I say something funny Brenda?" Casey asked slowly walking towards her.

"I don't have to say anything funny because you're already a joke to me." She said looking at her perfect nails.

"You know what? You and your little troops are not even worth it." She said to her and turned to leave.

"Yeah run off to your little pathetic friend. Go and wipe her tears off. She actually has a mom that's defending her." Brenda said referring to Casey and her friends laughed.

Casey chuckled because for a second there she was ready to let this go but this little twat provoked her and she did something that nobody expected.

She turned around with a kick that landed on Brenda's chest making her fly in the air and she landed so hard on the cold pavement looking paralyzed. Avery's hand was covering her mouth in shock because she and everyone else didn't expect that.

"Like I said, pick on someone your own size." Casey said and Brenda's boyfriend rushed towards Casey attempting to hit her but she roughly pulled his hand twisted it and cracked his fingers and he groaned in agony. She punched him in the face breaking his nose because he was bleeding massively. She pushed him towards the gate fence and he fell on his butt after hitting it with his back.

"Anyone else wants a piece of that?" She asked and some of their school mates actually backed away from her. "Good. So from now on anyone that touches Avery Montgomery will have to deal with the consequences." She said and she turned around walking towards Avery taking her hand and they walked back inside the school premises.

Later that day word got out about what Casey did to Brenda and her boyfriend and she got in trouble for Avery. The principal called her parents and they sat her down and asked her why she did what she did and she told them that she was defending her bestfriend from all these bullies at school.

Avery was called to corroborate Casey's story and she did because it was the truth. Even though what she did was for the greater good she still got in trouble.

She was suspended for a week.

How was Avery going to cope without Casey now? She knew in the pit of her stomach that the bullying would get worse since her bestfriend was not going to be here for the whole week.

The next two days were brutal. She was pushed around, called names and they kept asking her where was her savior Casey. She endured all of that for her own sake and she wasn't planning on telling her bestfriend.

"Your little friend isn't here to protect you." One of Brenda's circle of friends said and they laughed. "This is for her." She said pouring her coke on top of Avery's head and she just closed her eyes taking all of this in because in all honesty there was nothing she could do to stop this.

"Enough!" A deep voice said and they quickly looked at the person behind them. It was the guy from two days ago. Avery noticed him.

"Bradley..." One of these girls called him out softly.

"What are you doing? Are you honestly doing this to another person? Please tell me why are you doing this to her?" He actually folded his arms and looked at them. They were suddenly tongue tied. "Did you suddenly lose your voice? Listen to me very carefully. If you touch her again you'll have me to deal with." He added.

He walked closer to Avery and took her hand and they walked to the boys locker rooms. It was empty because at this point everyone was in class and others were on free periods.

"Go in and wash your hair I'll wait for you here." He said and she nodded going to the showers and washed the coke off her hair. Bradley went to his locker and retrieved a towel for Avery. He went to give it to her and she got out of the shower and dried her hair thoroughly.

"Thank you." Avery said because she was really thankful that someone other than Casey was actually standing up for her.

"No need to thank me. Casey asked me to look after you so that's what I'm doing but besides that I really don't like what this school has turned into." He said.

"You and Casey know each other?" She asked curiously.

"Yeah we do. So she still hasn't told you about the relation between me and her?" He asked.

"Are you guys dating?" She asked doubtfully.

He chuckled before he answered. "No we're not dating. We're cousins. Our mom's are sisters." He answered and his perfect dimples appeared.

"I really didn't know that. Casey has never told me about having a cousin at school."

"She didn't want to draw any attention to me for certain reasons which I'm not going to get into right now. Anyway let's get to class." He added.

He walked her to class after she told him which class she was getting to. Every period she'd find him waiting at the door for her and walked her to another class. He did that until break time. She sat with her in the cafeteria and he ate quietly. The were sitting on opposite seats facing each other.

"You really don't have to sit with me in here. You probably want to sit with your friends." Avery said to him breaking the silence.

"I don't have friends." He replied shortly after chewing his food.

She was surprised at what he said. She was about to ask him why didn't he have friends when one of their school mates shoved herself next to Bradley.

"Hey Brad, wanna come join us at our table?" She asked him brushing up against his arm.

"Hannah... nah I'm good here." He shortly said drinking his juice.

"Come on Brad, my friends and I want to invite you to a party tonight." She said flashing a smile at him. Bradley and Avery turned their heads to her friends that was waving at him.

"A party on a school night?" Avery asked subconsciously.

"Yeah but unfortunately losers are not invited. The venue is for cool people only." Hannah said with a smirk.

"Fine... I'll come but only one condition." He suddenly said.

"Anything for you Brad." she said.

He got up and walked to the other side of their table and sat really close to Avery holding her waist and held up her hand to his chest. Avery was really surprised by his gesture but what surprised her more were the words that came out of his mouth next.

"I'm bringing my girlfriend with me. Would you like to accompany me to the party babe?" He asked Avery looking at her with those breathtaking gorgeous ocean eyes. Avery became tongue tied because she really didn't know what was happening right now. So he held her waist tighter so she can say something.

"Uhm..ahh..yeah I'd like to go with you." She muttered.

"Wait... you are dating her?" Hannah asked.

"Yes I am. Do you have a problem with that?" Bradley asked daring her and she shook her head. Bradley kissed Avery's cheek and Hannah got really jealous and stood up leaving their table.

"She left." Avery said and Bradley let go of her waist but still held her hand.

"You really are coming with me to the party right?" He asked and Avery awkwardly pulled her hand from him.

"I can't go to a party Bradley. My guardian will never let me attend a party. She will kill me even if she even finds out that I'm considering it." She said.

"Well I'll talk to her." He said it with ease.

"Are you crazy? You really don't know what Mrs. Welch is capable of." Avery said in panic because she knows her guardian too well.

"By the time I'm done talking to her she'll let you come with me. Don't worry about it." He said with certainty and she just sighed deeply.

"Bradley why did you lie to her about me and you? Was that necessary?" She asked.

"Yes it was. I'm sick and tired of girls throwing themselves at me and this plan seemed to have worked in my favor. If they think you're my girlfriend then they'll back off." He explained.

"You really have no idea what you just did, have you? Now everyone will hate me even more because they'll think we're together." She said.

"They might but they'll never lay a hand on you ever again. You're safe with me." He assured her and those words meant a lot to her. "Well everyone's looking at us now. I can bet that everyone knows about us by now. Hannah is a critical gossiper. She probably tweeted about it to the entire school." Bradley and Avery just laughed and he smiled.

"Well I need to get to the library before heading to class. This whole thing is getting really weird now." Avery said.

"Before we go. Shall we put on a show for them?" He asked.

"A show?" She asked confused.

"Yeah, I'm going to kiss you." He said and her cheeks reddened.

"Wha-what? Why?" She asked muttering.

"If we want them to believe that we're together then we have to convince them." He explained.

"Uhmm... I've never kissed anyone before." She shyly stated and he looked at her surprised.

"You want to tell me that no guy has ever kissed you before? He asked and she shook her head shyly. "I guess I'm a lucky guy then." He said pushing a strand of hair behind her ear. He got up putting out his hand for her and she took it. He helped her up and they walked almost out of the cafeteria where everyone's eyes were glued to the "fake couple."

Bradley abruptly turned facing her and he claimed her lips unexpectedly, cupping her neck, going in slowly. Her eyes automatically shut close and she followed his rhythm of the kiss. Her hand rested on his forearm that was cupping her neck. He held her waist pulling her close to him and at this point there was a lot of chanting, whistle blowing and Oohs and ahhs in the room. The reaction that was expected.

Besides all of that her first kiss was perfect no matter how fake all this was. Bradley slowly broke off the kiss looking at her and she slowly opened her eyes while he was still holding her in his arms.

"You okay?" He asked and his voice came out as a whisper. She just nodded because that moment didn't just take her breath away, it also took her voice away.

Once he made sure that she was okay, he took her hand and they walked out of the cafeteria and most students went insane. The video and pictures they took of them already circulated before they even walked out of the cafeteria.

Bradley walked her to the library and he went his way. Avery went at the back of the library and she sat down taking a breather. She smiled to herself touching her lower lip and a flashback of her first kiss came to her mind.

She finally got up and went to look for the book she wanted and she sat down looking for the chapter she wanted for her school project. She went to make a copy and placed the book back, taking her copies. She looked at the clock on the wall and realized that she had a few minutes left to get to class before the bell rings. She walked out of the library and she saw Bradley walking towards her.

"I'm right on time." He said. She just went mute. He walked her to her next class. He did that until school was over. For the time in a long time she actually enjoyed school. Having Bradley as a fake boyfriend was a huge relief because people actually backed off and no one teased her.
