Chapter 7

Evan and Amanda sat about two feet apart on the couch in his living room, each holding their coffee until it cooled down enough to drink.

“When I was fourteen, I started seeing a therapist. Her name was Dr. Nelson.”

“Why did you have to go see a therapist?” Amanda asked before taking a sip of coffee.

“My parents thought I needed to see one because I was addicted to playing video games.”

“Isn’t that what all kids at that age do?”

“Yes and no. I holed myself in my room for weeks and didn’t want to do anything else. It was an outlet for me so that I didn’t have to deal with shit that bothered me.”

“Like what?”

“My girlfriend had dumped me, and I guess I failed a test one time. I don’t remember that, though. I do, however, remember being dumped.” Evan’s mind drifted off to Lucy. He hadn’t been able to find her on social media and always wondered what happened to her after they graduated high school. Secretly, he hoped she got fat.

“So, what does this Dr. Nelson have to do with you being on a swinger’s website?”

“I only went to see her a few times, but she told my parents that she couldn’t see me anymore. She thought that I had fallen in love with her or some stupid shit like that.”

“Well, had you?”

Evan’s thoughts shifted from Lucy to the long-legged therapist that he would spend plenty of time alone in his room at fourteen thinking about. “I wouldn’t say in love. Who knows what love is at fourteen? Maybe obsessed is more appropriate.” Evan grinned.

“Gross. She had to have been twenty years older than you.”

“I don’t know, mid-twenties, maybe.”

“So, that still doesn’t explain the website.”

“I’m getting to that. So anyway, I was hurt. My girlfriend had just dumped me, and then this beautiful woman wanted nothing to do with me. It hurt my ego.”

“How did you get over her?”

Evan grunted before sipping his coffee and slowly lowering the green cup down to his lap. “I haven’t.”

Amanda looked noticeably, annoyed. “Were you thinking of her every time we had sex?” Her voice cracked, indicating how hurt she felt.

Evan reached down to touch Amanda’s leg.

She rapidly pulled away from his reach.

“No, I didn’t. It’s why I’m on the site.”

“Oh!” Amanda cried out, exaggeratedly. “So, you get to have your cake and eat it too!” She stood and swiftly placed her cup down on his wooden coffee table. “Call me crazy, but I was expecting some kind of understandable reason why you cheated on me. Now I know you’re just an asshole!”

Amanda quickly walked around Evan’s couch, snatched her purse from the back of a chair, and continued to the front door, gripping the handle tightly.

“You asked me to be honest with you! This is exactly why I haven’t told anyone this before. I knew they’d all leave me!”

Evan’s emotional tone made Amanda stop in her tracks. She looked back, only to see him fall into the couch and drop his head to his hands.

Amanda let go of the handle, set her purse on the side table next to the door, and walked back to take a seat next to Evan. “You’re right, and I’m listening. I want to hear what you have to say, and I promise, I won’t get mad again, no matter what you tell me.”
