Chapter 1

Rylan’s POV

I grabbed a duffle bag and shoved clothing, shoes and as many items as I could for Lily and I.

I looked at the clock and noticed that it was almost eight. Rick gets home at eight thirty every night whether if he's at a strip club or buying alcohol with his friends. I went to Lily’s room and gently picked her up before going down the stairs and ran down the sidewalk. We finally were free. I needed to get Lily out of this house.

He took everything away from me. Every characteristic of my father, he was like a carbon copy. Never did I ever think that my husband would do this to me.

“Fuck. What the hell is this doing here?”

I turned around and saw Rick stumble towards the house, running into a light-pole.

He got drunk again.

I tried to be as quiet as I could until I hit a garbage can that was next to the curb.

I ran away from him as quickly as I could and just when I thought I was in the clear, I ran into a stop sign near the sidewalk that knocked me down.

“Whoa, are you okay?”

I looked up, laying my eyes on the most handsome man I’ve ever seen. His dark brown hair was just long enough for me to run my fingers through while he pleases me. God, Rylan. Shut up.

He had to have been at least 6′4, towering over my 5′3 frame and his eyes were so intimidating that I had to look away. “Are you okay?”

“Huh? Oh, yeah. I’m fine.”

“Rylan? Where the hell do you think you’re going?”

I gasped when I saw Rick start to approach me.

“Answer my question or else...”

“Leave her alone.”

Rick looked at the handsome stranger and scowled. “Who the fuck are you?”

“I’m the one who’s going to beat your ass if you don’t leave her alone.”

He scowled and walked away without another word.

“Thank you. You didn’t have to do that for us.”

“Oh, it was my pleasure. Do you need a ride?”

Should I lie to him or should I be honest? “I’m umm… I’m taking her to my friend’s house.”

“Are you sure? I don’t mind.”

“I’m positive.”

He nodded and grabbed something out of his sweatshirt pocket, handing me a card. “Here’s my number. Please feel free to call me if you have to.”

“Okay, thank you umm...”

“I’m Rylan.”

“Call me sometime.”

Nodding, I walked back to my house and put Lily in the back seat. “Mommy? I’m cold.”

Lily was only two, but she’s gotten to be very good at talking for a kid her age.

“I know baby, we’ll find somewhere to go.”

After searching for a half hour, I went to a shitty motel downtown just for a few nights.

“Hello, ma’am. How may I help you?”

“Hi, yes. I was wondering if you have a room available for a few days.”

Nodding, he handed me a key. “That will be 150.”

Reaching into my bag, I grabbed my wallet and took out one hundred dollar bill and a fifty. “Here you go.”

“Would you like room service, ma’am?”

“Yes, please.”

“What would you like?”

“A glass of milk, two grilled cheese and do you have wine?”

He shook his head. “We only have beer.”

“Do you have a Mike’s Hard Lemonade?”

“We may have a few.”

“Thank you.”

I went to our room and put my bag on a chair before changing Lily into her pajamas. “I’m tired, mommy.”

“Don’t you want some food, sweetie?”

She nodded. “Yes.”

After twenty minutes, our food was brought to us and Lily fell asleep immediately after she ate.

Sighing, I took our trays and put them outside the door before laying down next to her, hoping that I wouldn’t have a nightmare, but I was wrong. As soon as I fell asleep, the memory came back from last night.

I went to Lily’s room to check on her after Rick ordered me to make her go to sleep. I scowled when I heard her crying as I went up the stairs and when I saw Rick I gasped.

He had a pillow over Lily’s face, shouting at her. “Shut the hell up. I told you to STOP crying!”

He looked at me and raised his eyebrows. “What the hell were you doing to her?!”

“Shut your kid up. She woke me up.”

“You DON’T ever. Lay a hand on our daughter. You got it?”

"She's YOUR daughter, not mine."

"Rick! How dare you!"

“I can do whatever I want.”

He shoved past me as I rushed over to Lily’s crib, rocking her back and forth to try and comfort her.

I woke up as I felt tears slide down my cheeks. I failed to protect Lily. My main goal was to be a good mother and protect my daughter no matter what, but I failed.

I put up with dad’s abuse for years and then Rick came along only to face the same consequences, but I will NOT let Rick do that to Lily EVER again. If he doesn’t stop, I’ll kill him if I have to. Just to protect my daughter.

I heard my phone vibrate and wondered who was contacting me this late.

Rachelle: Hey Ry, happy birthday! I forgot to tell you earlier. Hope you had a good day!! :)

Rylan: Thanks, Rach. I kind of forgot.

Rachelle: What? How could u forget??

Rylan: I’ve had a long day. This has by far been the worse birthday I’ve ever had.

Rachelle: Rick isn’t the cause, is he?

Rylan: Yes... I need some sleep.

I tried falling back to sleep, but the memory of both my father Rick stayed in the back of my mind for the rest of the night although my father died a year and a half ago. He hurt his only daughter and didn’t give two shits about it. I’m protecting her from now on. She will never be left alone with him again.

Nina: I personally think it's great. The plot started off a bit cliché but it changed. Even if it was cliché the whole way through, the writing style would bring it back. It shows that if you're a good author, it doesn't matter what you write, but how. I would definitely want to read on.

ggstvns: This plot is like a script from a movie the way it is played out in such great detail. The characters were made for each other and the way the author writes makes us believe in them too.
